i took my three gliders to the vet yesterday because my one girl (pika) was looking very sick and acting funny. the vet had some blood work done on her and found out that she has a liver condition, and that she probably had since birth . he told me that i would have to start giving her milk thistle, and would probably have to give her it for the rest of her life. does anyone have any info on this? or advice? i want to help my poor girl the best i can. my other two gliders are in picture perfect health! the vet said that my zabu was the most muscular glider that he has ever seen! shes so strong! thanks

I am so sorry to hear that you and Pika are going through this. I have never heard of using the milk thistle, but that is not to say your vet is not correct in his advice, and I would follow it. I do know that the herptavite has been credited with helping liver problems, and that adding extra into the BML mix, or maybe a pinch extra in some yogurt at dinner time has really helped quite a few liver-sick gliders. I know it helped my Goliath, and my vet totally credits the extra herp. for turning him around. Please know that we are here with you in this fight for Pika. If you need anything, please let us know.

I recently gave my glider milk thistle, not for a liver problem, but as a stool softener. I did not notice any adverse effects, and it did not cause them to soften too much, but would be something to watch out for. My vet did say that they do use milk thistle in gliders with liver problems. One thing I did note was that my glider did not mind this medicine, though it did have a smell that reminded me of prunes. Did the vet say what dose would be necessary?

thanks for the support everyone. my poor baby needs some extra lovin . my vet told me to mix a good amount of milk thistle in with her food, and he told me that if my other two gliders had it that it wouldnt bother them, so i am mixing a whole capsule in with there food. my vet told me that i should start seeing results in about a month. he said that she should be gaining weight and acting more playful. so, we'll see, i hope he is right, which i am sure he is, he is a really good vet! thanks again, and any further advice is always appriciated.

Did the vet know why your glider has liver problems? Was it caused from diet, bacterial or viral infection or from protozoian infestations?

my vet is guessing that pika has had this problem since birth, since zabu and scoot are so healthy. also he didnt think it was from there diet because i give my gliders such a wide variety of foods. also, forgot to ask before, what is herptavite? and where can i get it? thanks

Can I ask you...what is their diet plan? Trying to understand as to why a Dx of liver problems. Does your little glider have yellow nose and feet? Did your vet by chance do any tests? Herptivite is a muti vitamin. It along with Rep-Cal with D3 which is a calcium supplement is added to a mix that is known as the BML diet plan. For the BML diet plan go to www.sugargliderinfo.com/NutritinonAndDiets/leadbeat.htmlRep-Cal with D3 and Herptivite can be ordered on line at www.toandfrogliders.com and can also be found at PetSmart or PetCo. Cheaper to order on line.

sure, my gliders eat a variety of fresh fruit every night. along with a protein source which is usually tofu, cottage chz, yogurt or bugs. i sprinlke cuddle bone on there food for there calcium, and i also give them goya juice every night. i also have some glider food products that i buy from glidershop.com that i mix in with there diet. it seems to be working so far, up to this point everyone has been healthy. there noses are pink, no sign of yellow. pika did get tests done, and everything was normal except her liver. thats all the vet told me. so, unless anyone thinks i should do something else i guess i just have to wait and see how the milk thistle goes.

of course i feed them veggies! im sorry, i should of said fruits and veggies. and i do feed them more protien then just bugs. ive had my gliders for just over 2 and a 1/2 years and the diet that ive been giving them has been working fine. every year when i bring them in to the vet for there yearly check up my vet has said that there doing great. so i really dont think pikas liver problem has to do with there food. now i will be making sure she eats all the right foods sinc i have to mix in milk thistle every night and i will be hand feeding her to make sure she gets her meds. thanks for the concern.
