this is kinda a continuation of this post http://www.sugarglider.net/ubbthreads/sh...true#Post632751 I was going to take her to the vet over the whole tail thing, but I had a bill come up that I wasen't expecting, and now I have $146 until next paycheck, so I can't go to the vet until after the 1st, and now she's getting worse, her tail, past where she chewed the hair (basically the black tip) has gotten hard, she never chewed on the accual tail, so I don't know why this is happening or even if it's not normal, and now she's acting real slow and lethargic, she's sleeping all day and night and seems to stumble around when I first wake her up, but it goes away, but she dosen't have the spunk she did before all this started and it lookes like she stoped cleaning the fur on her face I had to take a moist paper towel to her face to wipe the dried fruit juice off she's eating but not as much as normal, I'm freeking out, I don't know what to do please help.....how can things go so bad in less then a week

If you can't bring her to the vet, try to keep her close to you, talk to her, reassure her that you're there for her. Monitor her closely to make sure that she's drinking enough -- cut fruits up like watermelon and feed it to her. Try hand feeding her stuff if she's not eating on her own. I'm sorry I can't be of much help but I really hope she'll get better soon. Also -- just in case, you might want to prepare an ecollar. The tail issue is a bit worrying.

See if a vet will either take payments, or defer payment until payday..or you may lose her. Or see if you can postdate a check. When it gets hard, that indicates necrotic (dead) tissue, that can spread a systemic infection quickly-and kill. Because gliders hide illness until they can't anymore-things are frequently bad by the time we know there's anything wrong. You can hand feed, or force babyfood, Ensure (any flavor but chocolate) or BML by med syringe-no needle (no more than 1/2 CC at a sitting), 3 or 4 times a day, but she has to get in, and may lose part of her tail. You'll need an ecollar on hand, and I'll post the link to the instructions. Force feeding is pretty much the same as giving meds, and I'll post that link also. Because this will require an antibiotic and poss. pain meds, there isn't, unfortunately, much more we can tell you except to keep food/liquids in her, keep her warm (on you if possible), and watch her very closely until you can get her in. Please keep us updated...from what you describe she is not doing well.

How to give syringe meds

Ecollar
The ecollar thread also has an attachment with step by step in pictures to help put the ecollar together.

I forgot to mention, she stopped messing W/ her tail, it just looks bad, and I'm not sure if she damaged it, for I'm going to take her out and see if I can hand-feed her some watermelon, and hold her like you said, all day every time I go into her cage she's just sitting there on her hot-rock sleeping W/ her tail covering her eyes

I would remove the hot rock...they can get too warm and actually damage tissue, and aren't recommended for gliders. When in her cage, keep the room temp around 70 (few degrees either side is okay), and put fleece squares (blankies) in her sleeping areas, and she'll snuggle down and be fine-but I really wouldn't use a heat rock with a glider. It's good she's not chewing at her tail, but if the tissue is hard, she may start, and it won't come back.

so the tip of the tail might be causing all of this?....hot rock is now unpluged, and I turned off all the A/C vents ex. in my beedroom so she won't get too cold, I'll go see if I can talk to some vets in the morning into letting me pay later, also, I hand fed her some watermelon and she ended up eating a pice about the size of my cell phone.....so I think she's full, I had to wipe he whole belly down W/ a warm wet paper towel, because she made a big mess W/ the watermelon, so at least she's eating

Good to know that she's eating. It's best you keep her company as much as possible. Sometimes, gliders suffer from depression. It's hard to say without getting her checked at the vet. Being with her might lift her spirits up and help her fight whatever pain she's in. Do keep us updated!

That's good, and watermelon is liquidy so will provide moisture. Don't be alarmed after this to see red poop for the next day or so, tho-watermelon can do that.

And yes, it can be, esp. if infection is present. Infection in an extremity won't show up on urine or fecal tests, but can be very serious. Normally if there's damaged tissue, the end of the tail is lost-but a lot of gliders do just fine without it. I have 2 rescues currently that are missing parts of their tails. One rescue we lost to liver issues early this year had only a nub-his had been pulled off by a former owner-but he was a happy, playful little guy nonetheless.

Keep us updated-we're worried about your little girl.

well I took a closer look at the tail, the part that would normally have the black tip on it, is dark, hard, and black, the area where she striped the hair off it is red, and (please don't yell at me) I kinda squezed it allitle and I got no reaction from her, and where she diden't strip the hair off it looks pink, (under the fur) and I gave that a minor squeze and I and she pulled away , so she has feeling there, I guess she's going to have to loose about 1/4 to 1/3 of her tail tomorow....I'd better go buy some grapes so I can feed her anti-biotics that I'm sure there going to give me (my male who died recently got a skin infection on his belly about 2 years ago, and the only way I could get him to take his medicine was to inject it into a grape W/ a med. dropper and hold him while he ate it), I put her back in the cage right now, because I need to get some sleep, I've been up for 24 + hours , right now she's in her bonding pouch that I tied to the cage, I think she's allitle [censored] I turned off the hot rock, but she refuses to go into the Chinchilla bath house that I had set up when my male was still alive, before he died they usted to sleep in there, and she's refused to since, also, dose anybody have any suggestions on why my male died, I woke up one sat. morning and he was on the bottem of the cage, dead, and what looked like his intestens (sorry to sound grouse were hanging out, and she was sleeping in the chinchilla bath house, I took him out and burried him and she made all sorts of barking and other noises for like a week, also, somthing I noticed on him was he has a yellow tint to his skin (compaired to hers) from the moment I bought him 3 years ago, the vet that treated his skin infection told me it was normal and not to worrie about it, so I forgot about it till now, I was reading some of the posts on these bords and it mentioned jaundice....could that have been what killed him???

sorry i dont know what may have killed your male glider... i am kinda new at this myself... but i do know you need to take your female to the vet asap.. xfilefan knows what she is talking about she helped me out with the same issue that you are going thru with the tail last year... my dog pulled at her tail and then she started chewing and then stopped but she had already damaged the tissue it was gangreen so i took her to the vet and they had to amputate part of her tail and stitch it up gave her antibotics, and pain med and now she is happy and playful as ever... like xfilefan said they are so good at hiding their illness but they can take a turn for the worse real fast.. please find a vet that can help her and keep us updated.. my thoughts and prayers are with you and your glider....

If the tail is hard, black, and brittle it needs to be amputated. I have seen gliders like this and I am so afraid the tail will break off. This causes severe pain in gliders due to the nerves in the tail. Please call and see if someone will work with you. I wish you were closer to us, I know several great vets here. This glider really needs help quickly, she needs anitbiotics and pain medication along with the surgery. I am praying for her.

Usually, but not always when the end of the tail turns black the deadnes will progress toward the body unless it is amputated. However there are times when part of the tail will die and eventually fall off. In any event the tail should be docked and the skin stiched over the tip. If this is not taken care of by a vet very soon it can develope into major problems. Especially if the deadness progresses to the body. Also be on the alert for any signs of self mutilation. Be prepared with an e collar.

I am so sorry for your loss, have you considered having the vet perform a necropsy, to determine what happened?

because I listened to the breeder and was feeding her the wrong diet for 3 years, and the infection from the tail had spred throught her whole system it's my fault, I shoulden't have blindly followed the breeder's advice, when I calm down I'm going to bury her next to her mate, Gizmo

Oh, Raptor-I'm SO sorry for your loss ~I'm literally in tears-but don't blame yourself. Many of us started out with breeders/brokers who didn't know what they were talking about-some lost their first babies...in my own case it took over $3000 at the vet in my first gliders first 3 months just to pull him through-alot of that was due to finding GC early, and some was plain dumb luck. When we buy our first gliders, we naturally trust that the person who sold them 'knows their stuff'...in the world of suggies, that frequently is not the case. It ISN'T your fault. Please don't let this make you afraid to own a glider again, now you know where help can be found, and they are such a blessing to have. I know your pair doesn't blame you, and knows you did your best for them.

Your post where you described her eyes and the set of her ears tore at me...Here's a link to the thread with my Gimli when we lost him in January ~ Body Language of a Sick Glider -his former home had abused him so badly his little body finally just gave out. There are two pictures, and it's the look a glider gets when they're beginning their journey Home, and at that point you just love on them until they go.

When one of our little ones die, we say they went to the Rainbow Bridge~I have 7 gliders at the Bridge myself, most rescues that came to me in bad shape. If you haven't read it, here is the story of the Rainbow Bridge, and a letter home from a suggie that went there:

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

A Letter Home

I just wanted to let you know that I made it. The trip wasn't an easy one, but it didn't take long.

Everything is so pretty here, so white, so fresh and new. I wish that you could close your eyes and that you could see it. Please try not to be sad for me. Try to understand God is taking good care of me...I'm in the shelter of his hands.

Here there is no sadness, no sorrow, and no pain. Here there is no crying and I'll never hurt again. Here it is so peaceful and happy that all the angels sing. I really have to go for now...I've just been called to try my wings.

As to your little boy..it sounds like he may have self mutilated-possibly due to a UTI or other infection, or an injury you may not have been aware of. A cloacal/abdominal mutilator can do fatal damage very, very quickly. It's rare that a glider will do that, and it's a response to pain or discomfort....the glider hurts, and so tries to attack what is hurting him...which makes the pain worse, and they attack more, etc. An ecollar is needed to stop the damage so diagnosis/treatment can be started. For one who doesn't know what to watch for, I'm sure that was sudden and horrifying to find him that way. Did you notice any kind of noise he made...like a crab/hiss with pain in it-almost like he was in an all out fight with another glider? That is one of the things nearly all cloacal/abdominal self mutilators do.

It's hard to say if he was jaundiced. Normally with liver failure or abnormal liver function-what usu. triggers jaundice-the skin in the ears, face, hands and feet will have a mild yellow (early) to almost a neon yellow (advanced) coloration. It's most startling to see around the ears/nose and on the front hands when it occurs.

And I hope you don't think we'd yell at you..you were trying to determine the extent of damage. The vet would do the same. I hope this helps some...from your description as it stands, it's the closest I can speculate. A necropsy would be needed for a definite cause, and even sometimes they can leave more questions than answers.

I am so sorry for your loss. You may have gotten your gliders from the same breeder as my sister also in Vegas. It took me months to get her to switch to a proven diet instead of the catfood and raisons the breeder had told her to feed. Please take some comfort that she knew she was loved and can now rest with her mate until they get to see you again.

the breeder was based out of parump (she has since sold her suger glider busness, and I coulden't get in contact W/ the person she sold the busness to....I'm assuming they went under) , she gave me Mazuri's new world primate biscuts, and told me to keep that full and to give them fresh fruits every day, and to sprinkle calicum powder on the fruit every other day, and every now and then to throw in a cricket or mealie, I went to korea for a year, and my suger gliders went to my dad in NJ, he ran out of the primate biscuts and started subsutuiting boiled chicken for it, and that's what I've been feeding them since, also she had 2 litters while she was W/ my dad, the first one was 2 females, and the second was 1 boy, which my dad gave to a friend of a friend of his.

Her diet was definitely off, but again, don't blame yourself. The ones who sell gliders really should know what they're doing, but unfortunately, they often don't. If you get another baby, I know without a doubt, now you know where to look for info, he or she will receive the best of care. Even your lost pair couldn't have asked for more love or better intentions. I feel your loss as if it were mine-and know you have become part of a family that will always be here for help and support with these little ones.
