We lost Chibi in June to sudden onset pneumonia. Where, how, or why I have no idea. Kawaii, whom I call Little Girl, was sad and lonely, so we bought her a female joey we named Koumori. They became fast friends.
At the beginning of August I noticed a swelling on Little Girl's cheek so we took her to the
vet. They drained the abcess and gave her antibiotics. She was her sweet self until toward the end of August when the swelling started comming back and pushing up against her eye. We rushed back to the
vet where they again drained the abcess, took X rays which showed no involvement of bone or teeth. The
vet said she had a piece of mealy worm stuck in her cheek, the hard skin, kind of like when you get the shell of a popcorn kernal stuck in your teeth.
We took her home with more meds and high hopes. A few days later, she came out of the pouch with her eye stuck shut with pus, plus she seemed lethargic so we ran back to the
vet on a Sunday. He said the swelling hadn't come back and she wasn't septic, that she had conjunctivitis. He was worried about her lack of appetite. We were to make glider smoothies and try to get her to eat. Monday morning we got her up for meds and her eye looked better, she refused her mealy which she loved. That evening when I rolled her cage out I saw her on the bottom in her cube, she did lick a little worm guts, she crawled out of the cube and just stopped, not moving. My husband, who is the holder during meds, picked her up and held her. She just started to fade and in a matter of minutes was gone.
I want to know why! Not that it matters, but we spent close to a thousand dollers counting buying Koumori for her, and I would have spent however much it took to save her.
Chibi was given to my Daughter by a professor who didn't have time for her and Little Girl whom we think was her sister we got from the same pet store. Do you think their immune systems were compromised by the mass
breeders who sell to pet stores? We also live at 7220 feet above sea level, could that affect their immune systems?
I couldn't take anymore loss, so we took Koumori back to her
breeder, whom by the way is wonderful, so she could return to her family. We only had her about a month, and I think she will be fine. I won't be, my heart is broken.
I scoured this site for any information about
diet, behavior, health, etc. There is a wealth of knowledge on this site I'm just sad I couldn't save them...
