We got in a little glider, Monkey, that had mutilated around the base of his tail to the point you could see the ligaments. The vet put him on Metaban as a pain reliever. The little rascal managed to pull his e collar off the night after he started taking the Metaban. We expected the worse, but to our surprise, he had not mutilated without the e collar. So we figured it was because he was taking the Metaban. He has gone for two weeks without an e collar and has not once mutilated. He gets the Metaban twice a day. So, we thought if this stuff is working so well for him maybe it will keep Bo from mutilating. Bo has been in an e collar for over two years and will mutilate every time it is taken off. The vethas tried everything on him without being able to stop him from mutilating. Anyway, we gave Bo two doses of Metaban at 12 hour intervals and then removed his e collar. DIDN'T WORK FOR HIM! A few hours after removing the e collar he started to chew at the base of his tail. We were hoping this would work for him as it had for Monkey. It is strange how a medication will work on one and not the other. Charlie H

Well, darn. I was hoping for the best on this one! Makes you wonder huh? Charlie, do you think maybe it is such habit for Bo that he continues to mutilate, or is it the pain? Probably a silly question, but it does make you wonder.

HI, Great it worked for one of your gliders! Could it be that he needed it for longer than 2 days? Just wondering. Angie

It is odd how it will work for one but not the other. But then again one med. will work for my mom but does nothing for me. (allergies) I'll keep my fingers crossed that maybe one day he will be collar free.!

Awww, I'm sorry it didn't work for Bo. Poor little guy. While reading your post, I had the same questions come to mind as Karin and AngieH. Is it caused by habit or pain? and maybe if he stayed on the medicine longer it would work? I'll be praying that you'll find help for Bo's problem.

Bo got the same amount as Monkey when he pulled his collar off. We have discussed his case in depth with our vet as well as Bourbon. Of course all we can do is speculate that it could be physological, intenal scar tissue, etc. We have given him several different types of medications and all to no avail. Bo has been neutered, has a female cage mate, gets the BML diet plan, pvc coated wire cage, plenty of toysthat he can play with, large wheel he can access with the e collar, chin house and special sleeping pouch. For a while he thought the vets office was his second home. We have given him so much medication that now when I call his name he starts crabbing at me. Course I am the bad guy who always has to get him out and hold him while Mary gives him the meds. He will take treats from me but would much rather they come from Mary. We were real disappointed that the Metaban did not work for him. Thought it would be better to live a life on medication than with the e collar. Maybe someday we will find a way. Charlie H

Charlie, I'm sure this was explored, but what about a different doseage? Is that not worth a try? A higher doseage? Or a different pain med, such as the one that was brought up that is put on the ears? Just a thought! Maybe someday, with all your persistence, you will discover the "cure" for self mutilating, I know it would be the largest breakthru in glider medicine! Chey, don't tell the vet but we did up the doseage by 50% for Bo. Didn't work. We have sent Dr. Fronfield the post about the other pain med. Will ask him what his thoughts are on our next visit, which is next Friday. Charlie H

Charlie, your secret is safe with me! That's too bad. But, we don't know what stimulates the sm'ing either. If it's instinct for them to do surgery on themselves when something is wrong, then, as long as that problem is there, they will continue to try to correct it, to the point of death. You would hope that if it IS pain a pain med would work, however if it's not pain and not known what is causing it, then, it's almost impossible to find the cause. Has anyone ever done a ct scan on a glider to see healthy or nonhealthy specimens? That just came to mind, I know it would be super expensive, but in this instance and I'm sure a lot more, it could prove to be invaluable, as it could show what is going on internally, in both, possibly showing what's causing the sm'ing??????? Thoughts on this? Or even doing an MRI???? Chey

Chey, please understand where BO is concerned, I have little hope that meds will work on him, as he has been a long time mutilator who has done extensive damage several times, the hopes that someday he comes out of that collar for good is always on our minds, I love Mary and Charlie very much, and I have been right there with them through their fears and hopes. but the fact remains that extensive scar tissue very well may be the ultimate cause at this time, they have cleared any and all medical problems that have been found, and they have tried everything possible for him for as much as we know now. all we can hope for is that some day, we can get all sm's, to stop. or better yet for it to never happen at all.
I just hope that Mary and Charlie don't get disappointed or blow of the meds for yet another glider who also may be a canadate for it without the extensive damage to the cloacal area. with the SM's, any and al possibilities, are worth a shot.
