I have a friend in miami that has a 2 or 3 yr old female glider. He takes outside and lets her run around in the trees and bushes. He plays hide and seek with her. I think he is crazy. This to me at least has some inherent dangers associated with it llike snakes and cats in the yard. She will go to the top of a tree and play around then he will step behind something and she comes back down te tree and barks for him, he steps out into view and she run to him. Is this NORMAL., or is he just lucky? also he feeds her small garden spiders and earth worms and beetles, one time she even caught a lizard by herself and ate it. WHat do you all think???

wow-- that would be pretty dang cool to be able to play with your gliders like that... I however, don't think I'd ever take the risk. As for the spiders and that from the garden... I personally would stay away from those as well... just cause I know that the gardens here are sprayed on a regular basis.. and I'd hate to accidentally poison my gliders. Interesting!

There is a certain element of risk in everything that we do. Life is one continuous series of decisions balancing risks against rewards. People have been killed while sitting in their rocking chair on the front porch.

I think it is great that at least one captive glider can have a taste of freedom and experience the life of his wild cousins. Sure, there is a risk involved; but I think the rewards far outweigh the risks. This is sort of like people who own raptors and let them fly free

I hope to someday get to the point where my suggies will be able to run free and come back to me. I hate having them in a cage, when they should have a whole jungle to run and glide in! This guy is so lucky, and so is his suggie!

This is a cool story. And of course it's risky, but I would hope your friend knew what was around before letting his/her buddy out to play. It would be nice to be able to control where and when they would come out of a tree, but lets face it, with my gliders, i would be the one having to go up the tree to get them . I wouldn't however feed bugs from my yard, that is too risky.

[:"#CC6699"]Although the idea of letting my glider run around outside sounds good, I just wouldnt risk it.

I mean, if we have to look out for loose strings on our gliders pouches so they don't get caught in them, could you even imagine what you would have to look out for outside?? Birds could snatch a glider up in a second, especially if the glider is roaming the trees.

I think it is a very bad idea because a human tamed glider does not have a healthy sense of fear like they do in the wild. Gliders that are brought up with cats in the house and are used to interacting with them, might not be afraid or run away from a cat outdoors.

I have a glider room in the making, I am going to get ALOT of HUGE fake tree and pile them in there. I think this would be awsome for my gliders. Your right, its not exactly the same, but it gives my gliders a sense of freedom without putting them outside and risking their lives.

As glider owners, we are here to protect our gliders, we are incharge of their safety because they are not wild, they are human tamed. Yes they have some instincts but its up to us to keep them out of trouble and you can't do that while their loose in a tree somewhere in front of your house. [/]

I think that sounds awesome! I bet that is one of the happiest gliders around. As far as risks involved in them playing outdoors, would you rather live to be 100 and stay in an apartment your whole life, eating ONLY the most nutritous food and running on a treadmill for two hours a day? Or would you rather live to 50 but have tons of fun and live life to the extreme? I think thats a pretty simple answer.

And being nervous about them eating the bugs? Hello!!!! What do you think they eat in the wild?!?!

I understand that some gliders won't come back to their owners like that one would, obviously I'm not saying to go stick them in trees. Since this isn't their natural environment, the odds are stacked against them. But as a supervised treat, RIGHT ON!!!!

[:"#CC6699"]The difference between bugs where gliders are from and bugs from our front yard is that our grass and our trees, which bugs live in and eat from, are treated with chemicals which could be harmful to a glider. [/]

The trace amounts of any pesticides that may have been ingested by insects in the wild are most likely harmless to the Gliders. My dogs occasionally eat grass from my lawn which I fertilize and sometimes use pesticides on. I am not about to force them to stay in the house all day and never have the option to roam the land. Unless you are on a golf course, most of which use obscene amounts of chemicals, I don't think that eating insects from the outdoors will have any significant impact on your gliders health.

[:"#CC6699"]I am just saying that even though it may not significantly affect your gliders health, the pesticides are still there. Its like people who do not feed their gliders things with artificial coloring. It isnt going to kill them but its better to NOT have it in their food. Gliders and Dogs are two totally different animals. You can't even compare them. Something that can kill a glider might not even effect a dog.

I know that people have gotten bugs from outside and have fed them to their gliders. I know that gliders do get ahold of spiders and moths in the house, but i wouldnt go into my front yard and dig up an earth worm for my glider to eat it. [/]

I agree; why take chances? A glider is so much tinier than even the smallest breed of dog (or cat). Years ago I used to have turtles that I would take outside to eat and play in the grass. Little did I know my Dad started using pesticides on the area of grass I was using, and though my turtle kept eating, she kept getting lighter and lighter--a slow but steady poisoning.

I think it's great to have a glider so bonded to you that you could play hide and seek outside. I had a kitten so bonded, he would take baths with me (and liked it!). But he thought all people were kind and loving; he met his mishap when he went outside and some neighborhood kids bullied him. I can't imagine anyone wanting to kick any animal, but my poor little Quincy suffered a horrible death because of his trust in me. I think we have a special responsibility when we tame a wild creature, and even more so when they place their total trust in us.

Glider proofing a room seems like a big enough task; I can't imagine trying to glider proof a yard! No matter how bonded your glider, there are just so many risks lurking out there. Yes, they might live a more enriched 50 years, so to speak, or it might be a more enriched 50 minutes. Yeek!

Amen Katty!

Jumkin--I see your point .. what would IIIII rather have... of course I'd answer that I'd rather have an enriched life. However, part of MY enrichment is being able to care for my sugars. And letting them go outside certainly isn't worth the risk of losing them out there... supervised or not.. the risks are still there in abundance. If you can live with yourself after watching your sweetie get attacked by some random cat or bird, or even if you just aren't able to get them back to you, then by all means... Have at it! I guess you're a stronger person then I am cause I would be absolutely devastated!

[:"#CC6699"] Agreed! And in my opinion, there is no such thing as "supervised" outdoor playing. If your glider is in a tree and a bird swoops down to get him, or a cat tries to snatch him, there is NO way your gunna get up that tree in time. You can watch him play, you can watch him run, but you could very well end up watching him die. Definatly not a risk worth taking.[/]

[:"pink"] [/] Wow, my gliders are very bonded to me but I dont thinlk that if I let them out in the trees to play around they wouldnt come back to me. I wouldnt feed my gliders spiders either because of the high risk of it becoming poisined. [:"pink"] [/]

Ok, so I'm assuming this guy knew whether pesticides were sprayed in his yard (unless you guys are referring to residual DDT. In which case nobody's safe, we're all going to die). So there we go, clean grass, trees and bugs. A happy little ecosystem. And neighborhood cats? I don't know about you guys, but my dog is the guardian of the yard and keeps all invaders out. He also doesn't touch Suki. SO there we go, a couple of risks easily prevented... now we just have to worry about those darn birds of prey which just LOVE to hang out in suburban neighborhoods. I mean we see them all the time right??? I don't know how many times i've seen them, I'll be eating dinneron the porch watching some cute little chipmunk play with the bird feeder, and SMACK! There comes a big old hawk to eat him. Happens ALLL the time, especially when I'm standng right next to it watching.

NO wait, hold on a second... thats never ever happened. Even when I was little kid and played hide and seek in a hay barn full of owls. In fact, I think that your prescense is pretty much a guarantee that a bird of prey is NOT going to come get your pet. I mean, they (the birds of prey) are completely wild creatures, they know to stay away from humans. So there we go. Once again I say Right on that somone is letting their sugar play around in a tree. As soon as its warmer and Suki is more bonded I'm definitely going to try that!

Well, I'm glad there wasn't some flippant remark about a sugar glider simply getting away from its owner and getting lost, as THAT would be the biggest risk factor involved... what gives?!?! The whole point of this post is asking if by letting a glider have free roam of the outdoors, fate is being tempted. I know that most would agree that YES. While "uncertain death" MAY NOT occur... the fates are most certainly tempted by sampling such "enrichment". Our new friend is simply asking for advice on this subject... and wondering if that would be a wise option. Do we really REALLY think a new glider owner should be told to go let his glider play in the trees? That by doing so everything will be just fine?? His question is if that type of freedom is tempting fate. Like it or not, the answer is simply YES.
As for waiting for warmer weather... why wait??!?!?! Take him out there... certainly the cold weather shouldn't deter you. Even better, take him out there at night time... cause that is when he'll be awake, and it'll be dark and definitly more enriching for him. You won't be able to see him.. but he can see you and certainly would come back if you just ask him to! In fact, maybe it would be a great idea to just let him stay out there. You can just go outside in the morning, greet him at your front door so he can come in and sleep. Or MAYBE you should make him a nest in one of your trees! Certainly the little domesticated bugger will be able to adjust with zero risk whatsoever! These are GREAT ideas!!!!! NOT

I think this thread has served it's purpose.

It's all about personal decision and choice. Like it or not, there may be chemicals in those lawns. One drop that might not effect a small dog would kill a glider, and if not, possibly give it brain damage. Same with a spiderbite. If you want to put your gliders life on the line, that's up to you. But it's the glider who'll come off worse.

Gliders don't generally mix well with other species. Even if it seems they're getting along fine, it only takes one little 'mockbite' and bam. No more glider.

Please stay civil with one another.

I will be closing this thread now.
