I all like got a new glider today..and its back left leg is all like hurting it i think because its like licking it tons and chewing on its toes...but i'm in a whole nother state, broke(i didn't plan on getting an unplanned glider.....), and clueless..i've been able to side-track with popcorn and feathers..but i need a temporary fix until i can head home....man...can't even go on vacation!!!

Can i all like cut the bottom of a cup out and like slide it over the gliders head as like a cone....the bleeding as like stopped, but now i have like blood all over my shirt..it freaked me out..she still uses her paw, but when she jump and lands she kinda falls over because she tries to like get off of that foot, and bites it, licks it, then goes on her way until she has to use it again!

SugarHoney, if you can get some plastic, like a report cover from walmart, some of the heavy medical tape, you can make a temp e-collar. Take a cut a circle, then, cut in, and cut a hole for her head, when you put it on, overlap the outside ends to get the cone effect, you can put tape on the inside edge to keep it softer, maybe even two layers. Then, use the medical tape, (duct tape would also work, so would electrical tape) and tape it closed. Any grocery store or walmart should have something in stationary you can use, if you have to use something paper, you want to make sure it's going to be thick enough to hold up if she's fighting it. Where are you at? I might be able to get you to a vet.

It is hard to read your post...

From I can read...you got a sugar glider today. Now she has a foot or toe problem?

Did you trim the nails or something and maybe too close? Or did she rip her nails by being caught on a pouch or fabric or something? Or could she have gotten her foot caught in the door?

Bleeding....?

My suggestion is to clean the foot and take a good look at it to determine if she needs vet care ASAP. If she is chewing...you will need to use an e-collar and seak out vet care ASAP.

Do not cut a hole out of a bowel as anything that can go over her head...she will be able to remove.

no..I got a phone call at like 4:00 o'clock today, from a person out in Vermont asking me if i could take a glider, she said it was walking funny, but she couldn't keep it, and i was just like thinking calcium deficiency or something, so i said sure, if she drove it out here..she did..I've only had her about an hour now..so i have 4 gliders with me....sorry about that post i was changing my shirt and checking on her while writing it. No, the bleeding was cause by her biting one of her toes, i put flour on it, and it has stopped, i also put some snti-biotics on it, left from my old cat rescue down-town. I am in Maine currently on vacation.

it dosn't seem that bad, i've seen worse But i'm still concerned, and i have access to almost none of my supplies, except what comes in handy from my old place that i had left behind(thank god i was a lazy packer!!).

I am heading off to walmart now to get the supplies for the cone idea, she is slightly better, calmed down now...she is curled up in my towel and is only lickign it every now and then...her back legs seem also awkward, but i am not concerned about that, just her foot at the moment. Her nails seemed to of been clipped, but a while ago, i will have to schedule a vert appointment when i get back to have them cut down, they are deformed(for lack of better words), i'm wasting time now..so thanks for the idea!!

back..all is said and done..she is content and eating grapes now by the way...she seems better...she is a doll. I would do as you say, but until i can get a vet to get them back to a normal or semi-normal shape, i will not touch them for fear of injury, for now she will be my 3rd arm.

this glider needs to get to a vet ASAP, and at the minimum an Xray needs to be taken, as well as a c&c to be sure there is no bacterial infection in there as well. it sounds to me that you may be right with the calcium defiency, but what I think has happened, is that it has a broken bone, and is in extreme pain, (thus the chewing on the foot and leg, this needs to be addressed immediatly

I agree with Bourbon. Any vet is better than no vet. You are doing great. It is just so hard when you are not in your comfort zone and close to your own vet. Can we help find a vet that is close?

She is doing better today, is currently sleeping on my lap! She is walking on it a little today, and i am putting anti-biotics on it every 4 hours. She is a sweet-heart, and up till now will only eat if i'm near..crazy little girl. She even tried a little jump this morning and was successful. The cone idea worked great!!!

I know the vet around here, but he is a jerk, i had to have a dog put down, but wasn't receiving my check till that afternoon, so i only had 50% of the charge and he wouldn't do it!! Not even with a payment plan or a promise to show up that afternoon with it. The dog was in severe pain, as it had been crushed by a truck

I have an appointment planned for an hour after i get home...thanks for the help. There is also no swelling, so though i am concerned, i am a little more secure.

okay, heres an update...she is doing well, much better, still limping, but is using her paw more. Other then licking it a couple times, she has left it alone(I removed the cone a few hours ago). At the moment she is playing in the room attacking some ping-pong balls i layed put out for her. She is a doll. I have given her a load of goodies, as well as the BML, which she loves, so her appetite is great! She is certainly an angel, and i am hoping to see if she dosn't get along with the other glider i got yesterday, but i will wait a few weeks till they are both settled, and have had a check-up at the vet. Thanks again for the help!!
She hasn't even crabbed at me through all of this, i'm amazed!

When do you go back home? Is it going to be soon? How is the little doll? At least you got her out of immediate harm's way and gave her safety from future harm. Is there any way that you can go home early maybe if you don't want to take her to a vet there? That way she at least gets vet care ASAP? Please let us know what happens with her. she sounds like a sweetie.

She is with my mother at the moment, but will be with me again on wednesday, and going ot her new home on Thursday hopefully, if all works out well. She is doing better, not chewing at all, though by the symptoms my mother described i think she may be going through deppression, so i am a little anxious, but she is still eating a little, and drinking she says. SO overall she is doing better then she was..and i am hoping she will continue to improve in her new home

I dislike being a thorn in one's backside...however, this foot problem as well as possible HLP has gone on for a week now with no vet care. I know you mean well...but vet care is needed and the reasons for not seeking vet care...is clouding the issue here.

Depression and being ill go hand in hand. So, to make this short...depression will make the illness even worse than what it was yesterday.

Please....this glider needs vet care and ASAP. HLP can kill a glider as will bacterial illness that often rob the gliders body of calcium that is needed to substain life.

I agree does the person taking her know she is having a problem. If it were me I'd ask you to get her to the vet for me. Why wait till I did get her it might be to late then.

toodles guy..i talked to the vet on saturday, i got back later then i had it scheduled, so i called him, and he said from the description that he didn't see any reason to bring her in, he said there wasn't much more he could do that wasn't already being done. He said as long as she is eating, drinking, and going to the bathroom fine it is good, and he okayed some antibiotics i was already using, and some that we have in storage here at the school, and the supplments i was using. He said to just chill, and if anything else happens call him right away(home phone number), he dosn't want to do anything that may put the glider down for any amount of time, he prefers trying all else first, and its not i'm just choosing not to bring her, its just i have faith in this guy, he has never steered me wrong with my sugar gliders before-so, if his new owner wishes to get a second opinion on thursday, she is free to do that, but with her improvement, and his assurances, i will continue as i have.

Sorry, I thought you meant an update on her, not on the vet

The fecal smear and cytology...one does not put the glider to sleep in order to check for a bacterial or protozoian problem. They just r/o the possibility of this type of illness.

I myself did not realize you picked up the glider for someone else. I hope the new owner understands that they may be getting a glider who is possibly ill with HLP much less a bacterial or protozoian issue.

Using and administering meds without proper diagnosing is not suggested. Sometimes with this approach ....the issue becomes clouded as to just what is wrong with the glider when it is finally seen by a vet.

Update was asking for how the glider was progressing along with wither or not vet care was sought as well as what the problem was. Right now...all we are doing is guessing as to what is wrong. The problem of the glider's wellness is still questionable and time is critical with any glider who is ill.

I was talking about the glider I just wanted to know what her prog. had been and if you had been in contact with a vet yet. Not hearing anything had me worried about her. Boy I even worry about the ones I dont own! They do get under your skin don't they. I'm glad to hear you did get with the vet I just wanted to know what was causing the problem. I have a thing about just treating the symptoms (they tried that one on my real kid and it was his apendex (sp) that didn't go over well with me). Hope the little one will be happy in he new home.

The antibiotics i used were some left over from my old shelter, and that only for a day and a hlaf, then my glider Natasha arrived with me, and even though it wasn't the exact same thing, she also had a small infection on one of her toes that i was treating, and since i had extra, and i couldn't get to the vet, i just did what i could Then i just had the antibiotics we had here ok'd so i could have my mother pick them up. This was an unexpected glider, i had the option of letting the lady kill it or take it, i just went with my heart i guess, it wasn't till afterward i figured out i wouldn't be able to care for her where i am, so i found her a home where she could get the care and time she will so obviously need. I'm not trying to be difficult in anyway, i am doing the best i can, with the resources i have and how the vet chooses to help me i have no real control over I was thinking of the other vet i used to go to, but he refuses to provide his services to me, after a rather loud dispute we had over a treatment of one of my other animals...guess my temper flared All i can say is that her foot is healing the well, the vet has done what he is currently willing to do unless the condition suddenly changes direction, and she seems to be doing better, i just got off the phone with my mother, and she says she is looking alot chipper today, and seems to be doing very well my gliders, Sugar and Natasha, as company. I'm sorry if it seems i'm not doing enough, but i am doing everything in my power, and if i could somehow come up with the resources to give her the best of everything, i sure would, i even considered leaving school to care for this glider.

[:"#CC6699"] rds3, Sugar Honey stated in her last post that she found a home for this glider... Unless you mean you will provide all medical expenses to prepare this glider for a new home? I am sure she is greatful for the offer and hopefully will keep you in mind if she needs to find a different home. [/]

plus, i do beleive our locations are rather distant, so it would be near impossible i have kept you offer in mind, and I apologize for not thanking you before, things have been rather hectic this last week between family issues, school issues, and this new glider. So thankyou very much, for it is good to know there are people as kind as you out there.

Ok, I now have this little girl and I must say that it will be touch and go for months. The vet has put her on oral calcium suppliments. She doesn't yet want to start her on antibiotics because she's afraid she isn't strong enough to handle them. She suggested treating the starvation first. There was no xray done because she felt it more of a muscle deteriation issue. The number one reason for her condition was starvation. From what I can gather, when she WAS fed she was fed dog food and veggies. She drags her hind legs behind her and her front arms are not even strong enough to pull her forward. Every bone in her body can be felt. The doctor said that there isn't much more she can do then what I am already doing and doesn't want to admit her because she is afraid the stress of hospitalization would kill her.

She is getting 2-3 drops of the oral calcium a day.
Bml
grapes
apples
corn (recommened for fat content)
peas
carrots
and extra chicken baby food for the extra protien to rebuild muscles.
Pedialite

She is unable to grasp the food with her front hands so I am hand feeding.

I'm going to attach a picture or two but I must warn you that she is in really bad shape.

I'll keep everyone updated.

Jenn
