Hello everyone, I wanted to tell my story to other sugar glidder owners. Last friday my daughter and I bought our first sugar glidder. We instantly fell in love with her while vacationing in tennessee for the Thanksgiving holidays at a flea market. We purchased this odd but adorable little creature and welcomed her in our home with love and a commiment to care for her. The first night at home she pretty much stayed in her pouch sleeping and occassionaly poping her head out to see what was going on or nibble on an apple. After playing with her on the second night and seeing how she was warming up to us, we were excited at the thought of her feeling more comfortable and at home with us. We put her in her cage around 9 that night and settled in for bed. Somehow during the night she managed to get out of her cage. I was devasted the next morning when i got up and found her dead in the toilet. This was the first pet my daughter lost and when I told her what had happend she was cried her eyes out telling me how much she loved her. I guess what I am trying to say here is maybe I was not educated enough on the proper care for her. I didnt think that she could actually open the door and while keeping it open, manage to crawl out.
Maybe I should have had more information about potential dangers before I brought her in my home. I dont know. In the short time we had her, we feel in love with her and it kills me to know that she suffered a terrible death right in my own home and it was something that could have been prevented.
Glidder owners, keep the toilet lids down and inform anyone you know about to purchase a glidder to do the same and somew how lock the cage door.
I feel somewhat better now that I have shared my story but we will still miss our little Jasmine.
Thanks

Hello and welcome to GlicerCENTRAL. I cannot tell you how sad I am that your first post with us has to be such a sad one. I, too have lost a glider to an accident so I know how you must feel. Just know that there are others here on this forum who have experienced just what you have and can support you through this terrible time. Please feel free to stay and learn all that you can about these wonderful little angels in disguise so that when/if you ever get another one, you will be even more prepared to give it the life that little Jaasmine knows you meant for her to have. Be sure to read the Rainbow Bridge post. It really helps me on my difficult days. (((((((((((HUGS))))))))))))

I am so sorry for your loss, it's so tragic to lose one to any reason..

Please, stay with us here at GC and research on these little guys with the hopes of getting another, chances are there is another out there who needs your love and attention to.

Again, I am so sorry for you and your daughter..

Had you had a secure glider cage...the little one would not have been able to escape...uless the door was left open. SO the warning should be...check out the cage well befor doing a purchase. Make sure you evaluate several cages ....not only for price but for security of keeing a glider inside it.

So sorry for the tremondous guilt you are going through right now. In time...it will fade and by then...perhaps, you will want to try ownershiped again of a sugar glider.

I hate to hear that you lost your baby. Take the time you need to grieve, educate you self more, then get up and go get another little lover. You will never replace your little girl but you can't go with out ever knowing the love a glider will bring to your lives. We are here for you.

I am so sorry for your loss. I've also lost a glider due to an accident, as many on the board have. Even though I know you feel guilty, you were a good mommy, and I'm sure Jasmine knew you loved her very much. Gliders are very special little creatures, and they burrow their way into our hearts very quickly.. Like others have said, grieve for your little girl, and when you're ready, another little glider angel will be waiting to call you mommy.
