I have been looking everywhere for a powdered calcium carbonate for darcy's diet. My boys have lost a considerable amount of weight in the past week because they started refusing their BML. I am starting to get worried because I know they are not getting what they need. Where would I get the powdered calcium carbonate!?!?

At the risk of sounding presumptuous, I'm guessing that you've exhausted all the pet stores around you...researching E-Bay, it's a reptile supplement...and you've searched the reptile aisles of every pet store.

Next suggestion is to go to the drug store. Ask a pharmacist if they have some that perhaps comes in a pill form & can be crushed. BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL that you get the corresponding milligrams needed in Darcy's diet.

Maybe if you post your location, someone who lives close to you can lend you some....perhaps go so far as to overnight it to you? I know there are several on the board who feed the Darcy's diet (I'm not one of them) & can give you a better suggestion. There are also a couple folks on the board here who sell nutritional supplements....check on the "For Sale" tab at the top & look under dietary supplements.

Just bought some this week. I got mine at: www.kornax.com It is Kornax Enterprises and their phone number is 1-877-328-1744. I got a big bottle for around $12.00 I think. I can't remember for sure I ordered several things at once. It is a bottle of 12 oz. 100% pure calcium carbonate powder.

Until you get the stuff, just go ahead and mix up the Darcy's without it. I fed without it for a long time and my gliders were okay. I just added some extra calcium orange juice concentrate to their fruits and they were fine. This place ships fast so you will have it in a few days.

Let me know if I can help. I have fed Darcy's for over a year and have 2 neutered males and a breeding pair that are thriving.

The right calcium for Darcy's diet is a human grade supplement. It is not from a pet store.

Getting the calcium is a must of course, but I'd be more concerned about them eating at this point. Yogurt has calcium in it as does many foods they can have. Are you giving them something else to eat? Boiled chicken, some baby fruits, fresh fruits and veggies, nectar (can get at the grocer too) Yogurt drops with calcium and also vitamins have calcium in them. If they won't eat the BML no matter what, find a diet they will eat. Gliders aren't like some animals that will eventually eat or starve, they WILL starve themselves if they don't like their food and can become ill or die.

That is not necessarily true. Actually, it is equally acceptible (from the original diet) to use Jurassical (in the reptile section of Petco, or petco.com ) 5/8 tsp if you use the high calcium Ensure, 7/8 tsp if you use the regular, per bottle. This is from saharanfox, whose glider Darcy, is who the diet was designed for.

On a separate note, if the gliders are losing weight that rapidly, I'd go to the vet ASAP and find out if a bacterial or parasitic infection is to blame-they DON'T normally lose weight like that from being picky. If they are, I'd look for an underlying cause.

It's not like they are loosing a ton of weight I am just a little concerned. I highly doubt that there are underlying causes of this. They have been eating less and less of the BML for a good 3 weeks now but I thought it might just be the batch so I made a new one but I guess they're done with it cause the new one lasted a day or two and then they just stopped eating it. I really like the simplicity of Darcy's diet.

Right now they're eating everything except the BML. Fruits and veggies at night and then mealies and yogurt drops in the morning. I have been mixing wheat germ and baby cereal with apple juice and they have been eating a tiny bit of that too.

Have you tried folding the fruits and veggies in the BML? I do that every couple of nights to mix things up. That way, while they are eating the veggies, they are sort of forced to eat BML along with it. They also take it more readily if I offer it as a licky treat.

If you need you can ask a local vet if they can sell you some neo-cal-glucon. Its a sweet calcium supplement often used for gliders. Its original purpose is for infants, so it taste really good. Its really hard to overdose gliders on calcium so it is generally safe to just add a drop or two to their diet every night. It dosent have any other ingredients like vit D or phos. so its very safe to use.

You might try Judy's version of BML, it really worked well for my kiddos, and they love it, they have never rejected it.

I have tried Judy's version and they wont touch it. I started them on Darcy's last night and the bowls were empty this morning.

I'm not sure if that's an accurate statement. I think gliders can get too much calcium, just as they can get too much phosphorus. That's why the Ca:P (calcium to phosphorus) ratio is so important in these diets.

Do try to pick a diet and follow it as outlined. Any variations (unless approved) mean you're no longer offering the diet, as "prescribed."

You can overdose a glider with calcium. "Too much of a good thing"... It can end up in the formation of kidney or gallbladder stones, deposits in the eyes that can possibly lead to blindness, and other detrimental health effects if they're chronically overdosed for a long period of time. Too much can be almost as bad as not enough. I only give extra in the case of a rescue with HLP, and never for longer than 30 days. Do be careful.
