The package says to make sure to boil them for at least 3 minutes for "safety". Do you guys really think that's necessary or is it just a lawsuit prevention thing for humans? Also, does wheat germ go bad? And if so, how quickly?

You boil it just incase there would be anything on it that would harm you when digested. Wheat germ does go bad but i forget how quick. I used it all before it goes bad. I know that when its not refigerated and after you open it, it goes bad after a couple days or something.

Wheat germ? I can't believe it goes bad that quickly. They keep it in an open-ish bin at Whole Foods with all the organic flower and stuff. It isn't refrigerated there. Wow.

Regardless of what all the health food addicts say, all produce should be cooked before eating. It loses a certain amount of the nutritional value but at the same time kills most bacteria. E coli is a threat in ALL raw vegetables not just spinach. The wheat germ from whole foods is not quiet the same as the wheat germ used in the BML diet. The wheat germ used in the glider diet has been fortified and will go bad.It is almost like two completely different products. Charlie H

Do you use the frozen veggies? I don't boil my frozen ones, just put it on the plate frozen. I know that the veggies are blanched before freezing but if you use fresh I would peal them really well and then steam or boil them just to be safe. I don't know about how long the wheat germ, we go through it fast here so it never lasts long enough to go bad, lol. I noticed at Minyards they now carry it in a box which is so much cheaper than the jar. Angie

Wheat Germ goes bad in only a couple of DAYS if NOT refrigerated. It CANNOT be left out at room temperature.

Where do you get the type of wheat germ used for the glider diet????? I was unaware there are two types. I guess that might be why my new girls were good eaters before I got them a few days ago and now they seem to care less about the BML. It probably doesn't taste right. I'm glad I asked. I'm about to make a new batch.

I get it at either minyard or kroger in the cereal isle. Its in a glass jar at Kroger and a box at minyards. I use both and haven't noticed a difference in the gliders eating either. We really mix up the BML well, we make us a much larger amount than most people do and I taste each batch to make sure its sweet enough, the longer you mix the sweeter it gets.

The wheat germ at the grocery store with refrigeration goes rancid after 3 months... I called the company and that is what they told me.

Hold on a second, it sounds like you guys are talking about something completely different than what I've been using. I spent three hours and the only thing that I could find called wheat germ was located with the flour and other dry stuff, it's dried and in a plastic bag with a seal at the top. Are we talking about the same stuff??

If it is the "Kretschmer" wheat germ(That is the only option I can find here) it is in a jar, and the lid of the jar says "refrigerate after opening"...
Becki, Personally, I might chuck it if I were you... I did that too the first time I made BML, I didn't refrigerate it, and I ended up throwing it away after a couple of days. I didn't want to take any chances.

If you look at the top pictures from the BML diet page, you'll see the collection of goodies that goes in the recipe. The wheat germ in the picture is in a blue jar. The stuff I got was in a red jar, at Wal-Mart, in the cereal aisle (high up on the top shelf). It does say on the jar lid to refrigerate after opening.

I don't know, because I also haven't tasted it. But, "when in doubt, throw it out" just seems like the safest advice to follow.
