I have been considering switching to the Darcy's diet because it seems easier. I currently do the BML and my glider loves it.

Just wanting some feedback from people to see what they think of their diet. I know it's a touchy subject with a lot of people... just could use a little input.

Also, how exactly does the darcy's diet work? do the gliders actually drink it? (I know I hate ensure. tounge )

If your gliders love the BML diet, I would keep them on it. Switching diets, in general, isn't recommended (unless they're not on a good diet). If you do switch to better suit your lifestyle, just be sure to do it gradually.

From the Darcy’s Sugar Glider Diet page, it does look like they just drink it (any flavor except chocolate, and not the high-calcium or high-protein kind).

I don't feed Darcy's diet, but I do know it was designed for a sick glider, and many gliders on this diet will gain weight. So, if you have underweight or sick gliders, Darcy's is a good choice. thumb

My two boys are on Darcy's diet and they seem to do really well. No excessive weight gain, and they just gobble it up. I freeze the liquid portion of the diet (like many do with BML), and I feel like there's a little more flexibility with the fruit/veggie/protein sources that you feed, and I enjoy mixing up their fruits when I can. It is pretty easy to make like you said, just mix the calcium with Ensure and go, but I've heard of people who have fed BML long enough that they can whip it up pretty fast and don't really put much thought into it anymore. So I guess difficulty level of preparation varies with indivudual's opinion.

I agree with KattyM though. If you're gliders are doing well on BML and enjoying it, might as well stick with it unless it just doesn't seem to fit your schedule anymore, in which case make the transition slowly like she said. smile

Good luck.

EDIT: To answer your last question, they do drink it, or lick it if you freeze it. Mine absolutely love the vanilla flavor. You just put it in a bowl you can trust not to turn over and they're good to go. Fruits and veggies are fed raw (or frozen, whatever your preference) with fresh protein source (wormies, chicken, etc) in their own bowl.

I feed darcy's, I used to feed BML but darcy's is alot easier to prepare plus my suggies never liked BML. They LOVE darcy's. I order the calcium carbonate from glidersanonymous.com. I buy the vanilla and strawberry ensure, they love both.

I buy the frozen dole fruit mix(peaches, grapes, pineapple, strawberries and honeydew. And for the veggies, I buy the green beans, carrots, corn and pea mix. Yes, they drink the ensure.

Edit: Plus they get lots of mealies!

I agree that if your gliders are eating BML, it's better to stay with it. I believe in the ol' saying "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" I'd feel more confident in the BML diet, so a little extra trouble is worth it for me. dunno

I use Darcy's diet but I do suggest if your gliders are happy on BML please leave them on it, my gliders never got use to BML so that is why I have used Darcy's for the last almost 6 years. Darcy's diet isn't all that simple, you have to add the extra calcium and give them the extra veggies, meats and fruits and be really careful because it is really high in fat, so I would suggest leaving them on what they are one if they are happy with it.

I've been feeding Darcy's for close to 2 years now. All my suggies LOVE it and they're all in fabulous condition and wonderful health thumb ! I know not everyone agrees, but I personally think it's one of the best diets out there smile !
And yes, they drink/lick up the Ensure. It's usually the first thing they go for because they love it so much. tounge

As for switching diets, I don't think there's anything wrong if you want to switch, as long as you don't do it short term. If you're going to switch and try Darcy's for a week or two and then switch back, that may be too much for your suggies... But if you're going to switch and stay with the Darcy's for awhile, then that should be fine. wink
