Ok, this could be bad.The satellite collar the vet put in ( just noticed tonite ) is cutting into Flip's neck a bit. The edge isn't sharp but not blunt. Area round neck ( all i could see is bottom of collar ) is all red and somewhat irriatated. It also seems the tape the vet put around edge has some blood. Now, Flip doesn't seem to be bleeding, I just think it's seriously starting to irritate Flip's neck and cut into it a bit. I am goint tomorrow first thing to get a E-Collar put on. Dangit, just when things were going well this happens. Any input as to if this is serious or not?

As always when the integrity of the skin is compromised, there is risk of infection. If you have some moleskin you can put on the edge of that collar, that should help with the irritation. You might put some antibiotic ointment on the irritation, where it's been rubbed raw or bleeding. Poor little guy, he's been thru so much already!!!!

My suggestion is to ask if the jacket can go on now.

He is doing well otherwise. His appetite is a little lacking but more or less fine. The collar is just rubbing too much against the sking. Know what I mean? I am going in today to have a new collar put on or put on my jacket. Docotr wanted to weait until Wednesday but I am going out of town and my mother doesn't want to wait until then.

Just got back from vet. He saw the irritation and said it was just that. He was / is real red but it should go down. I put ointment on but shouldn't. It matted the hiar....oops. I bought baby powder and at least 3-5 times a day will be applying it to the neck area. This should soak up any moisture as well as provide some relief for Flip...right?

I have to agree with theglidersangel - contact Mary & Charlie H - they have their own design and it is used VERY successfully. Allows the gliders certain freedoms that most collars don't and causes no irritation. 979-478-7546

Huhm, what do you all think of posting alternative collar designs (with instructions) that have been successfully used? Or am I opening a can of worms here?

[:"blue"]I don't think it would be a can of worms, so to speak, as colars/jackets for gliders are always being improved.

What I would suggest is starting a new thread for that topic since this one is long and it would more than likely get lost. [/]

MystiqueLL....did you contact Mary or Charlie of GliderTree?

They should be able to help you with the design of the e-collar as well as how to handle the rubbing the skin raw.

For right now I am keeping the old one on. The new one goes on at the vet visit on tuesday. Until then, I am keeping his skin nicely powered with baby powder. This will eliminate irritation , moisture and so forth. I think he actually likes it.

p.s. He still eats like a little pig.

Well, the saga continues. This time it coulda been more serious. Actually, 10 more minutes without knowing and he very well coulda died. Keep in mind this happened within an hour ago.

My mom went to check on Flip at one point at night. He was " fine ". About a half hour later...max...Flip was bleeding seemingly severely right around the area where he had the second surgery. I also noticed torn tape and blood on that tape that was attached to his collar. My guess is he hit the stitch area with his collar and tore a stitch.

So now what? Well, I am at my laptop right in front of the aquarium. I have to be here for a couple of hours to make sure it " heals " well enough until morning. I think there is some very small bleedingbut it is ( coagulating? ) Anyhow, I can see Flip right now and he has drank a good bit of water. So at least some of the blodd he lost, is being replaced by water. Argh...this totally sucks.

He looked REALLY REALLY BAD at first. But I think it was due to the fresh wound. Now it is only a little residual but not " real red " bleeding which leads me to believe he's getting better. So now I got to stay here until like 12:30 am and it's 10:50 or so. He has an appointment tomorrow morning first thing at nine to see what's up. Called vet and he said to just go tomorrow morning. I guess we got to get him healing before vet looks at him. Wouldn't do Flip any good being seen by vet if he is all bloody. Basically it's now " wait and see " time. If the bleeding stops maybe I can get in a few hours of sleep. I am nto counting on it though.

So mom is taking him tomorrow. I got to be at airport for flight by 11am. Fact is my schedule is insanely tight and i can't handle anymore vet visits. I am giving mom instructions to give to vet: If Flip needs more surgery of any sort...don't. Fact is, he has been through so much, that unless he just needs a couple more stitches, I don't want him to suffer anymore. I rather have his memories in good health then see him in a e-collar suffering for years to come just to " have him around ". Well, I'm signing off now...Catch ya later.

Oh, gosh...will this nightmare ever end for you and Flip. I felt he was doing so well.

Truely understand the suffering issue. Befor you give up...will make one more attempt for help. People in Texas...who do rescues....Charlie and Mary of Glidertree have dealt with mutilators have been successfull with lengthy treatment of these gliders to where most are now e-collar free. My last attempt here is if you are unable to go further...perhaps Flip could be sent to them. Airline trip would not be more than a few hours to Houston and I am sure Charlie and Mary would make the drive to pick him up.

Anyway...Just a sugestion as an alternative to not putting Flip down. I know he has to get beyond tomorrow for anything to be possible.

So, we are here if you need further help or support.

Sending prayers healing and strength for your friend...Flip as well as for you.

I heard about Mary. I however don't know if she has had someone like Flip. Although I doubt even this si the worst that has been associated with SM. I don't know about sending him to them. I don't want to put him down but at same time it would hurt just as much " giving him away ". I mean it's not like I send him to Mary, or someone else, and then a couple years down road say, ok time to give him back ". I leave for Hawaii tomorrow ( maybe today when you read this ). My flight leaves at 1pm and need to be at airport by 11:30. Not to sound conceated, but this is last thign I woulda wanted to happen...ARGH!!! I know in my heart he is not done fighting. He was very active ( as in scratching and trying to get away ) when I tried to pick him up and check on him. He ate tons of banana / apple yogurt with some apple juice mixed in. ( he needs food and fluids a lot ) . I don't know peeps. I mean, sending him to Mary, giving Flip up, knowing he would suffer for some time more, and not " seeing him again ", or letting him RIP...These past few weeks have totally stunk.

Charlie and Mary are the most skilled and knowledgeable people you could find to take care of Flip's problem. I thought about them as soon as you posted, but was a little afraid to post as this gets so personal. If you want to give him a chance at a quality life, Charlie and Mary would be the way to go. But if you think he has had enough, then you know him best. Such a hard decision and yes I've been there. I wouldn't trade place's right now.

Fransisco, I don't envy your position right now. I do send my prayers and hugs to you both. I know you and your mom will possibly have a very difficult decision to make. Can they have a quality life in an e-collar? Yes, there have been many advancements made in cage and accessories where they can have a decent quality of life. I hope and pray it's not something serious and can be easily treated.

Hugs to you all!

Mom is taking him to vet right now ( it's 8:50am right now ). Flip stopped bleeding and has ate / drank at the very least normally. He was active as usual last night and this morning.

It appears Flip just tore a stitch or cut himself some. While it was BAD last night, it seemed to have scabbed up some by this morning. This is good because well he " healed " himself. But it is bad because it could of caused a blockage of sorts. The vet should work this out though.

I leave for Hawaii today. I won't be able to make the cage for him before I leave. And I honestly don't feel comfortable leaving him in cage with me gone. ( Understand? ) One more week in aquarium won't hurt him any. If anything, it will keep him mroe contained to heal better. I plan to customize his old 18/18/36 cage. I am going to make it into a 18/18/24 cage. Not real tall but enough to mvoe around. I already have his " bed " planned out. The satellite collar that has recently sucked, will be changed today. vet. has instructions to put a more " E-Collar like " collar on him. basically like a satellite collar but swept foward more. I know anyone who knows what an e-collar is understands.

Well right now I am getting ready for trip and awaiting the news form vet. I am requesting he do a UTI test and Fecal test. I told him to a while back but he said it wasn't
necessary " at that point. After this he better. Anywho, looks like Flip beat the odds AGAIN. He scared the living HE double hovkey sticks out of me AGAIN. And now we start the healing process AGAIN....lol

p.s. Flip is eating normally...yay. NOw if he can pee, he'll be "fine".

Well here I am in Oahu Hawaii. We are on ( right next to ) Waikiki beach. Weather is so-so right now. It rained for like a good 4-5 hours during late morning / early afternoon. I did however squek in both a run / walk and also a swim. The water was a bit cold but I got used to it real quick. I am here helping out brother ( not really but oh well...lol ) while he is at a physics conference. I get back the 18th. I am having a very cool time.

That brings me to Flip. Talked to mom tonite and got some AWESOME news. She took Flip to the vet day I left and got him back that night ( last night ). It runed out the bleeding was just a cut, however be it a bad one. Great news is he is " healed up " and it wasn't a torn or broken stitch or anything. He is very active, as my dad says Flip has woken him up in morning twice this past 2 days or so ). He is going to the bathrom , both #1 and #2 , and that is good. Still struggles but he is going. He is eating too. He drinks apple juice, eats yogurt, and is eating some catfood too. The catfood is because A) he likes it and more importantly B) provides some vitamins and nutrients and stuff. And yes, while he is not eating BML right now, he is still getting the two supplements in other food.

So all and all this past week isn't too bad. Flip has beat the odds yet once again. He survived the SM, as well as his cut, and the post-surgical stuff. So I think he is a true survivor. He is not going anywhere for a LONG long time. And I am sure as " heck " not going anywhere either. So once again, ALOHA from Oahu, and I wish a great day to you and your own.....Francisco

p.s. Did I mention I am in Oahu, Hawaii?...lol

Well that is such uplifting news. Thank you for the update.

I have been to Hawaii and on Oahu several times. Love to be there now since I am in the Midwest. However, I love Maui the best and then the Big Island Hawaii.

Have fun. You will be back befor you know it.

Fransico...have a WONDERFUL time. Oahu is absolutely gorgeous and make sure you go on the ATLANTIS sub trip. We were actually lucky enough to see a black tip shark while on our tour (very rare the guide said) but absolutely amazing and if you walk along the beach right there you can see the sea turtles out there and can even journey out with them! My hubby and I were there just a few months ago and LOVED it. Make sure you go to the water falls and the snorkeling. Also find out about the tour to the "market days" a bus takes you there (it is at the stadium) and it is like a HUGE flea market but AWESOME prices and definetly where you want to get all your soveniers (sp?). If there is a special someone in your life go over to the Hilton and walk through their shops. There is a place there (cant remember the name sorry) and pick her up some of the Maui Rain perfume. It is the BEST smelling stuff ever. All my friends now order it online. Of course it is MUCH more expensive online than at the store. Have LOTS of fun!!

So glad to hear the good news about flip!!

Ok, so I checked Flip's neck ( got home from Hawaii few hours ago ). It is not bleeding or " as red " as before. However, it remains " raw and hairless ". Is the somewhat raw skin, without hair a unavoidable sideeffect f the collar? I am having a new collar put on him today. I don't think a e-collar ( as is shown on glider health is the best idea for Flip. ) With a shotglass style collar, the glider gives up eating on his own mostly, but gains less rubbing on neck I think. With the satellite collar, or rubs the neck more, but Flip can eat and drink completely on his own, but also loses some mobility. My main concern however is the loss of hair and raw skin. Does this sound " normal " ?
