UPDATE:

So I took him to the vet tonite. Dear God is it ever a tense time when something like this happens. ( Anyone been through this? usual reaction I guess... ) There are both some good and bad aspects of the visit. Bad is, he seriously chewed himself up. He did VERY serious damage to himself. Had to get castrated and neutered. Kinda sucks but if it helps him, as I know it will, it's a "good" thing I guess. Good news is doctor was amazing. he took care of Flip very well, and he is doing as fine as can be. He got cleaned up, and is spending night in incubator, maybe tomorrow too. ( Gonna cost a lot but worth it. ) He is gonna be "that or this" for a couple of weeks. If he's gonna be fine, he will be so in a week. Will update tomorrow after we talk to vet. Thanks for your prayers, keep em coming.

[:"blue"]Glad to hear you were able to get him some help so quickly. I'm sure Flip will be none the worse for his "operation" and obviously your vet took very good care of him.

Does he by any chance have little Flip in an e-collar so he he can't chew himself any further?

Thanks for keeping us updated and we will look for more news over the next few days. [/]

Oh I'm so sorry! Poor Flip!! Did they run tests to rule out like a urinary tract infection?? That's the first thing that comes to my mind when that kind of mutilation happens...Poor baby...I'm wishing for the best for you and little (big) flip.

Doctor spent like 15 minutes making a E-Collar fit him perfectly. He looks like a "old man" in it with eyes kinda scrunched up...lol No tests yet. He is being observed for the next day or two. Doctor cleaned him very well, gave him a shot and fluids. Will update tomorrow.

[:"CC6699"] I am so happy to hear flip is doing okay! I assume your little flip is a lone glider? I was just recommended to put a little sleeping buddy in Bandit's pouch, to make him not so lonely. Like a little beanie baby or something, maybe that will help! Please keep us updated! [/]

Mystique, let me be first to say WELL DONE!! You reacted EXACTLY in the way that is most beneficial to Flip! Although the vet may have been the one to do the surgery, your quick decisions and reactions also contributed, and as a result the little guy is still alive and could well make a recovery. WELL DONE!!!

I knew that I loved Flip very much. I mean that was only magnified by the fact his mate Nora passed on last month. So you can imagine how I felt seeing Flip in his mutilated state. As I told Karen, I am a VERY lucky guy for several reasons. The first is I went into his room because apparently the heater was left on. Here is the weird part, I don't ever remember turning it on. Fact is it was some short circuit or God himself that did it. Either way I am insanely thankful because if it hadn't been on, lord knows when I woulda found out about Flip's condition. Secondly, I have a insanely good vet hospital not more then 10 minutes form house. It doesn't have one certified vet, or even two...but three. All certified in exotics and one who was the vet to the local zoo for exotics. three, money doesn't matter one bit. Emergency visit $78 , Treatment $100+ , Flips health and friendship, priceless.

Here's some more info. I got Flip home from the vet a little while ago. I wanted to get him set up in his "observation cage" before I came to update.

Right now he is in a 15gallon aquarium inside my room. It is heated by a good radiator set at 80 or so. So keeping him warm won't be a problem. I gave him tons of licky treats when I put him in the aquarium and left more yogurt and a meatstick on a flat dish about one inch high. This way he doesn't have to work too hard to get food. I put in a water bottl of course ( flat back - held on by suction cups ). I got him one of those ferret or hamster igloos as a "pouch". However, I had to cut a bigger opening to allow for e-collar. I also cut a side off so I can put it against side of aquarium and observe him when he's inside.I have to keep him like this for at least a week. It doesn't sound like fun but he seems ok and it is for his own good.

The vet said he was real active and eating a little. He tried to give him citrus but Flip didn't take too well with that. But as mentioned he is eating and drinking plenty of water. he is really active...as active as ever. He is still very swollen but that is to be expected. Will take a few days at least to see how that goes. I have to take him in tomorrow or day after for a checkup. ( Let it be known this was VERY VERY EXPENSIVE!!!! Make sure you take care of your gliders for their health, and for your wallet. I don't say this to be cheap, but trust me, premium vet care is not cheap. Any vet bill for something like this is not cheap. ) I also had to get him neutered and castrated...yuck. But it was for his good.

Now for the "bad" part. vet kinda scared me telling me this part. His "perneal?" area is still very swollen. And Flip chewed his rectal area pretty well. The doctor stiched him up but is still worried about Flip being able to go to the bathroom. We will have to watch him for a couple of days to see how it goes. If he isn't able to use the restroom in a couple to few days: worst case scenario...you know what it is, I don't have to say it.

But for now he is doing well. I got the medicine and instructions on how to take care of him. The rectal problem is serious, but since this injury just happened, doctor isn't "too worried" just yet...but still very cautious. Will update again when I have something new.

Boy this has to be really tough for you and Flip.

Back on Oct 17th a few days after Nora passed away...you wrote Flip was crabbin with his head between his legs and that he had just been seen by the vet a few days prior. Did he by chance continue to repeat this behavior which led to this mutilation of himself? Or did it go away till he actually chewed himself up?

Did the vet check for a possible UA problem or was this related to diet that caused an impaction? Sorry, for asking these questions....just trying to find the cause of his mutilating himself.

If possible...put a heating pad on one end of the aquarium set on low. Check it often for a day or so to be sure it is enough heat. This will give Flip a nice area that is nice and toasty to keep warm on. And some fleese or material so he can cover himself on it. This method would warm his body more evenly.

Sending prayers that Flip will Get Well Soon.

Just a quick update:

Flip is trying to use the restroom I can tell. I think he let a little bit of "something" go through. I am not sure what it is but something came out. It was only a TINY amount but it's a good sign if he is using the restroom. Even if only a tiny bit, it shows things are "as they should be". This doesn't mean he's going to be ok, or I could be completely wrong.....Just a positive to be noted.

good to hear he;s doing well! i got my fingers crossed and prayers for him.
why do gliders mutilate themselves? and anyway we can prevent it? i think its a relevant question so if others read this post they know exactly what to do and why it happens. even a link to another post with this info will be helpful.

Keeping my fingers crossed for Flip. Glad to hear he's at least getting a tiny amount thru...

Dude,
Gliders will usually start to mutilate because of pain, whether it be from a neutering, a UTI, a broken finger/tail/ etc. They do not have a very high tolerence thresh-hold for pain. They chew to get rid of the pain which causes more pain which leads to more chewing...you get the picture I'm sure. It's ugly, and frightening and expensive to treat and the only way to combat it is with pain meds and proper treatment by a vet, usually an e-collar until the site heals up enough the glider no longer chews at it. There were many problems with SM in males when they were being neutered, we found that leaving the scrotum and just taking the testes helped with this issue. Males who are neutered now in the new improved way have much less chance of SM. Not to say the females are not Sm'ers, they can be.

Hope that helped some

Here's a few very helpful links. As said already though, Mystique set a great example. He was lucky he had an emergency vet so close. If your vet lives further away, it is usually best to try and get an e-collar on them as soon as humanely possible.

Here we go..
Self Mutilation Symptoms..
Emergency Contact for SMers
Glider Health Website.

The last one provides a LOT of information. Not to direct the attention away from poor Flip in anyway, but this is another experience we could all learn from.

I have my fingers, toes, eyes, and all other crossables crossed for Flip.

Well I have some good news. I went to check on Flip again ( he is checked on twice and hour at least ) and he went to the bathroom...( poopied.....is this ok mods?...lol ) He had been struggeling a lot since yesterday but that's not surprising. I mean he was very very swollen and just went through the ordeal and surgery. The worries were about him not being able, or possibly not being able to use the restroom. If he couldn't only one option...you know what it is. However, his going poopie shows he is improving even after only one night of medication and care. He is getting a oral medication, ointment for his "area", and tons of care. It does not mean he is out of the woods, btu it's "taking that first step" that is a very positive sign.

Compared to the alternative, I think going "poopie" is a wonderful step in the right direction! Way to go Flip! We're all rooting for ya little one!

It's amazing how fast they can go downhill, and it is also amazing at how quickly they seem to recover with the proper care. You are a great glider mom, and it shows! The whole community is very, very proud of you and how well you handled this. Keeping him in our thoughts...
