I'm not sure if this is the place to ask but I just found out that the place I get my mealworms packs them in corncob. I thought corn can be toxic unless frozen. Should I repack my mealworms if so in what?

the corncob packing can be bad if it grows mold. The mold on corncob bedding produces aflatoxin which will kill your glider eventually. I would buy from a different supplier if you can. But to repack most people use old fashioned oats or wheat germ for their wormies.

Thanks! I was sure I had read something somewhere about corn and aflatoxin.

No, don't get those and don't feed them to your glider.

Atto, the frozen corn we give the gliders is okay. The cornmeal, corn bedding and feed that some people raise and store mealworms is not worth the risk that there was or is mold in it. It's different than what our bug munchers love to eat. smile

What if I changed the corn to oats as soon as I got them home? I have called a lot of pet stores around here and they all seem to use corncob.

There has to be somewhere that u can get some worms shipped . and then start your own worm farm! laugh i think that would be a great idea. i dont know much about the process. but i know that a friend of mine does it for his reptiles. that way u dont possibly poison ur suggies or pay for more of the worms to get shipped to u.

When I purchase mealworms in corn stuff, I shake it off them with a strainer and start feeding them oat bran/oat meal. I guess that's okay since we sometimes run out and have to buy from pet stores.

Thanks for the info but I don't know anything about starting a worm farm. I have 3 gliders 1 male who hates the worms and a female who loves them and a 2 1/2 week oop female, 50 50 on whether she will eat them or not, so I don't know if farming is worthwhile for me.

No, taking them out of the corncob bedding definitely does not reduce the risk that they may have already been exposed to aflatoxin. Once they get it, it binds to their DNA and cannot be removed. You never know if the corncob bedding they were kept in when they were an eighth of an inch long had aspergillis mold and therefore aflatoxin.

I would, under no circumstances buy mealworms that had ever been kept in any type of corn product if I knew about it. I did have a glider die and the necropsy suggested aflatoxin poisoning as the cause, although I have reason to doubt that diagnosis. It still makes me very scared of aflatoxin.

Most places keep mealies in oatmeal or other meal. I think corn is actually unusual to use in a mealie farm. Now crickets are a different story and they are almost all kept on corn products. I know www.grubco.com is a great company to order mealies from. They come packed in newspaper, but of course that's not what they were raised on. I've been assured it was not corn though.

Grubco uses oatmeal is what I was told when I called. I'm very impressed with them, had my order in less than 48 hours and didn't even have a dozen dead ones out of 6000! I usually have more than that dead in a cup of 100 from the pet store, lol
