I went into the room, the water bottle was empty, even though i refilled it last night. It must have leaked, Brandis is in shock, his eyes are half open, he is weak, he is continuously nibbling at things, he wont stop. He is drinking water like a horse, I am going to go to the store and get pedialyte now, please pray for him.

Keep him warm, hun.. a cold sugar glider is unlikely to want to eat. You need to try and find an emergency vet. Any vet will do, as all vets know how to administer fluids .. which is what he needs.

Keep offering him water, maybe with a little fruit juice or a little honey in it to bump his sugar levels(not too much fruit juice, don't want to give him runny stools) and keep him close. You NEED to find a vet who's open though, and the sooner the better. The quicker you find a vet, the better his chances are.

Let us know. Praying for him.

How is he? Have you gotten anything down him, or has he been seen? Let us know...

I just got him to drink some pedialyte, my sister is looking for an ER vet, he gets these bursts of energy, and then sleeps, bursts, then sleeps. He isnt making any noises, his breathing sounds fine

You're doing good Jessie.. just keep trying to get him to drink, ideally with a touch of honey in it to improve his glucose/ blood sugar levels. If he's showing signs of energy, take it as a good sign.. it means he's not dehydrated enough to be completely and utterly lethargic.

I'm asking Judie to come along and give her valued opinion.

ok, thank you. I am still looking for a vet that is open. He keeps his head held up, and he keeps trying to glide, but then gets weak again and sleeps. I found him wandering the bottom of his cage very slowly.

Your little one needs to be Sub-q'ed by a vet. My guess is he is dehydrated and his electrolytes are out of balance. This can be very life threatening. May also be suffering from low blood sugar as I am not sure when the last time he ate.

Did he eat any fruits and veggies last night or BML?

he had fruits last night, they were all eaten, they had apples. The water bottle has a leak in it, i just bought it. Brandie is okay, not dehydrated. Brandis's fur was tenting on his neck, it isnt tenting anymore and when he isnt sleeping, his eyes open fully, but he still is weak.

Sending prayers you find a vet and that your wee one recovers.

Jessie:

I had this happen to me recently. Gave him pedialyte and some "licky" honey. He came around in a couple of hours and was just fine. Any vet would be a good choice but if one is not available keep up the honey and pedialyte.

Wish you luck!!!

For the future, I now have (and Judie recommends) 2 water bottles in each cage.

His problems then may not be just from a leaky water bottle.

If possible...get him to an emerg vet. Have them rehydrate by sub-q'ing, do a fecal float with a cytology as well as a UA. He just may be suffering from a bacterial or protozian issue and not just a leaky water bottle.....unless he did not get any moisture from his foods for several days due to his mate eating everything.

okay, I called a vet who is open, but he has 2 emergency's right now, I am calling back in 20 minutes. I have attatched a picture of the way he stays sleeping, he is next to my face in the pic, but where ever he is sleeping, he keeps his head up like that.

Do you have orange juice? apple juice full strength, maple syrup....anything with sugar in it. Water with enough sugar to make it sweet as a last resort.

Keep him warm.

The spreading like a kite...with neck drawn backwards...is a seizure.

Does not sound good. Is he doing this because it is easier to breath? Or is it from some sort of muscle spasms or from being disoriented....like vertigo?

Personaly, I would stay calm...pack him up to keep him warm and go to the emerg clinic. Forget the phone call thing....and just go.

Sending prayers all will be well soon.

Karo syrup or any pancake syrup.........
But I agree with Judie, if you can get a vet to see him that is definitely the best option.

he isnt spreading like a kite, he just wont let his head rest. He does put it down, but he tries to keep it up. Right now, he has it hose resting down, but he still looks like he wont let himself get comfortable. I have attatched a picture of the way he is laying, its so sad.

I got in contact with 2 vets. One is my regular vet, who is closing now and wont stay open even though i told them it was an emergency, they offered to see him in the morning. And then the vet that sees my dog, who doesnt specialize in gliders, but all i need right now is sub q fluids, but he has 2 emergencies now and the receptionist told me to call back in 20 minutes.

Can't say for sure, but it is probably OK. Honey, Karo or some of Judie's suggestions would be better. Do you have a neighbor that might have one of those items??? If you are going to be able to see a vet in a short time, I wouldn't worry about it.

If my vet closed his doors when I had an emergency, he would never see another dollar from me !!!!!!!!!

Hang in there and stay as calm as you can. Your glider needs someone with a level head........

Gosh....it is soooo depressing when a little glider suddenly becomes ill.

Gonna keep my fingers and toes crossed and pray all will be fine.

Okay, I took him to the vet, I sat there while the vet read about gliders and everything. He gave Brandis 5 ml's of sub q fluid, is that too much?!??! I am [censored] out here, I don't know if that is too much or not

The vet read all about gliders, he took brandis's weight, he weighs 95g... the book said males should weigh 115-125, so hes small? He doesnt look small to me. Anyways, he also took pictures of him, he said he has never seen one before, he always just turned everyone with gliders away because he didnt know anything about them.

He didn't charge me for my visit, he said that hes glad I was forceful and just showed up, or else he would have never had seen them, never had read about them, and now he is very interested in learning more.

Brandis is doing okay, still sleepy, the bump of fluid on his neck is freaky, but, from what im told, it will go down. He must be getting some of his strength back, he has bitten me REALLY hard 3 times since getting to the vet.

Now what, if he isnt better tomorrow, should i have all those tests ran?

It would be a very good idea to go ahead with the tests, to rule out any parasites/bacterial problems, should things go wrong again. Monitor his food intake tonight if possible too. I am so happy he is doing better!

It would be a good idea to have him checked out by your normal vet tomorrow anyway, even if he is acting ok. You want to rule out any possible illnesses or something that has been hidden until now. Glad you got him in tonight. Good luck, and keep us updated on him

If possible get Bandis into your vet in the morning. Yes, by all means...have the testing done and the little fella may need to be sub-q'ed agin.

Because Bandis has not done a full turn around so to speak...from experience this would indicate he has another serious problem and the dehydration is only a secondary issue. Need to find the primary cause.
