I had started a thread a few months back, but I cant seem to find it now. My boyfriend and I have decided on moving to Makakilo, Hawaii, on Oahu, only for 6 months. We found a really nice apartment that allows pets. SO, I was wondering, is there any type of license i could obtain, that would allow me to keep my gliders in hawaii for that long? This will be the middle of this year or end of this year, we arent too sure. How hard would it be to get a license? It would have to be a game and wildlife one, right? Im not too sure about all that stuff. Anyone help me out? Or lead me in the right direction? Thank you in advance!!

Sorry, Rosa.

You will not be able to take your gliders with you to Hawaii.

[:"blue"] I believe that Randy is right...Hawaii is very strict, they will not let you take your gliders onto the island, and there is no way to smuggle them over either, if that's what you wanted to do. [/]

Hawaii is very, very strict about the animals allowed into the state. Mainly because they have had, and are still having, ecological disasters from foreign species being released. I know you don't plan to release your gliders while you are living there, but the government there won't want to take any possible chance. They even have animal sniffing dogs check out the cargo holds on incoming planes just in case some critter has stowed away.

Can you find someone to foster your gliders for the six months you'll be away?

Phill

Just wanted to add it is not only gliders they will not allow, we lived there for several years and you can't even just bring over a family pet, cat, dog, you can do it but they have to be kept in quarentine for months at a time before you are allowed to pick them up, and then due to stress of not having family there, new enviroment, etc, once there if they get sick, they have to stay even longer. I would totally scrap the idea, very strict, find a good and loving home that would be willing to glider sit while your gone, or just find them a good home. Sorry you aren't getting the news you were hoping for.

Just wanted to add, I really think you could find a home to care for your gliders, we all know how hard it is to part with them, if you were closer, or ever come to Kansas, I would be happy to keep them for you until you come back, but I am sure if you start now, you'll find someone close with glider knowledge that would be able to do it for you for the cost of just the food, or maybe even free. Good luck.

Thanks everyone! I am still not sure what Iam doing. I would really love to live out there for a bit, but could NEVER possibly give my animals upworried We'll keep thinking, lol. I never really thought of getting someone to "babysit" for them for that long, but it seems like the best option hopefully they'll still remember meupset

queenduck, actually, THANKFULLY that law about quarentining , changed in June 2003, or somewhere around there. I was SO happy to hear that. Now, if you have everything done, shots and checkups and rabie vacanation, you can bring your pet home right away. I think the most they stay is 5 days unless something terrible goes on. Let me try to find the link!

And Thank you sOooooo much for that offer. just that 6 months~ year seems so long to be apart with them. ANd then, come back home, I dont even think they would remember me But like i said, it sounds like the best option now. I just could have sworn I read that I could get licensed and be OK.

Our dogs are coming with us too, so this is SUCH good news Now we have to get a microchip injected into their leg, but I dont think that will cause much damage, they said its painless, and the chip is no larger then the size of a grain of rice.

That is really great news for Hawaii residents, I was just there in May of 2003 and the friends we were staying with stil had a dog in quarentine on the big island, we were in Maui, and had ordered another from the states in it was on it's way to quarentine. We moved to Hawaii from Alaska when I was a kids, and our cats stayed in quarentine for over 6 months because while he was there he developed a eye infection. If your heart is set on going, or you have to go, I think if you have bonded gliders and are vacationing at someone's house you know will take care of them right, I think they will miss you, might forget about you, but will quickly remember when you start working with them again. I personlly love vacationing in Hawaii, but hated living there. My mom goes back several times a year, but that is too much for me. Last year when I went back I was 7 months pregnant, too fat for the beach (but let me tell you there was a bunch of us pg women on the beach) to uncomfortable from the heat. I told everyone I was going back for the FOOD, I was craving Chow Fun, noodle dish, wish I could have found a way to get it here, was an expensive craving. Good luck to you.

I have a sister living in Honolulu and she is always asking me to come and live there. My pets were always a strong reason to say no. All that aside, I don't mean to bust any bubbles here - just be sure this refers to ALL pets, not just dogs and cats...... A glider, still illegal in some areas of the mainland, may present an entirely new problem on the islands. I truly hope not. Good luck and have fun!
