I just bought some pinky mice for Prissy I didnt think I could ever do that but I havent had the chance to go buy her mealworms and I think she may be pregnant again. How long do I keep them in the freezer before I give her one and once I am about to give it to her do I have to thaw it out before hand that is what a lady at Petland said I had to thaw it out first. Please let me know asap I am going to put them in the freezer right now.
Thanks

"Do not defrost or microwave the frozen rodents prior to putting them in your glider's cage. I have found that my gliders will chew on them even though they are frozen and they will defrost gradually over the course of the night anyway. In this way, the remains, if there are any, will not be spoiled when you remove them from the cage in the morning. It is necessary to be extremely careful with raw meats and raw egg because there is always the remote possibility of contamination with Salmonella and other bacteria."

This is from my glider book, hope it helps!

Well, lol, no I'm not brave at all. I thought about feeding my gliders pinkie mice before and I have to many worries to do it. Such as, the bones... will they choke?

One time Eddie trapped a small mouse in the corner of my room before and ate it. After that I put Eddie in his cage and set down mouse traps intell I couldn't trap anymore.

Eh, I think it's gross and I'd have a major problem cleaning up the remains. But I don't have a problem feeding meali-worms o.o

The mice have only been in there for a short time but I dont see them moving around anymore, is it safe to give it to her now? I will have to leave the room or something or not look at the cage while she is doing this. I know this is what they do but I cant bare to watch.

yeah it's cool now. just toss one to her & leave the room if ya need to. dont worry about any clean up; there wont be a trace of them in a minute or 2. the bones aren't really calcified & the gliders eat em right up. nothing left to clean up.

gymnast mum, the pinkie is a good source of nutrition yes. but there are some that believe feeding a glider a pinkie that resembles her own joeys will make her cannibalistic. as her own joeys may appear to her as a pinkie.

no no no...lol.. A glider knows the difference between a pinky and their own young. Think about it, a joey, stuffed in mom's pouch for almost 70 days is going to smell like....? It's mom! A pinky mouse, pulled from a freezer and tossed in a cage (or alive) will in no way smell like that mom or that baby. Pinkies are a great nutritional source for pregnant moms, so I would continue at least 1 a week for this girlie GymnistMom I fed 2 a week with Mattie and never had a problem with her cannabilizing joeys.

Generally, leave the mice in the freezer for at least an hour to make sure they are dead. I never thawed mine out, for the reasons above...they don't smell so bad..lol. I never once had any mess to clean up from Bonzai or Mattie enjoying them, and that was 4 litters of joeys we went through. I couldn't watch either, and I def. couldn't feed any alive for Pete's sake! Ugh!!

Good luck with Prissy

I fed pinky mice every other day for every single pregnancy my female glider went through. She had a 100% joey survival rate. I never lost a single one, and each one lived to healthy maturity.

No offense to anyone, but any glider that cannot tell the difference between a pinky mouse and her own joey, should not be bred.

I have never lost any joeys either and this is the first time that I have given Prissy pinky mice. I am happy to say that I think there are no remains of the mouse Prissy started it and Spike finished it. I have another pinky mouse in the freezer, when should I give that one to her and should I let it thaw out a little bit before giving it to her? While I was at Petland tonight a lady that has one rescue glider told me to feed pinky mice and not meal worms because they are high in fat, I dont believe that to be true. I know we should feed like 4-6 worms to them a day but I never heard of them being full of fat

[:"blue"] I've heard the pinkie resembling a joey story also, but I think it's just an old glider's tale

As far as thawing, it was my understanding this was recommended to keep the glider's tongue from becoming cold enough that they might accidentally bite it. Someone correct me if this is also an old glider's tale.

BTW, pinkies can be fed live if you can tolerate it. I have enough trouble with the frozen ones so live is definitely out of the question. [/]

Dude.. this is indeed considered an old wife's tale. I mean, come on. Gliders eat meat in the wild, and we all know how intensely scent orientated these little guys are. I can assure you that the smell of their squirming joey, their genetic future.. is going to smell very different from the sharp smell a rodent releases.

I should point out I do not feed pinkies either.. I have considered it, but the thought of 'clearing up' afterwards just makes my stomach turn.

This's been discussed many times over on the board.. I'll try and find some old posts about it. There is absolutely no proof or reason to believe that feeding sugar gliders pinkies will encourage them to eat their own young.. just some very paranoid people.

Try the Search Option.

shaz, no one doubts that gliders eat meat in the wild. bugs and spiders and birds dont resemble their own joeys either. i havent heard of gliders consuming rodents in the wild either, as it was said on a previous post it is possible thats this is a myth, but noone can know for sure? unless of course it has been researched through and through and of course as we all know it nothing about glider has so far been researched. im not sure if you have actually done any research on this, i know i havent i havent gone through the breeding process at all yet and from what i last remember neither have you. so i dont have any first hand experience on the subject. i just merely pointed out the website where information on why pinkies should not be fed was found

I feed my gliders the pinky's live. It's gross and sad and after the first time I never stay in the room. The reason I give them live instead of frozen is because it gives them something to "hunt" every once in a while. I think they have fun dragging these poor mice around and carring them up the sides of their cage.

the joey easting thing def is a old glider tale, this stems from those that have first birth joeys that don't make it when new owners fed the pinkys.

some things to really consider as to the pinkys though.

1. some offered the pinkies as a way to give them what they would eat in the wild, this is different here in the states. as in the wild the pinkies absorb the sunlight and their bodies create some of d3 that is needed. "also it is an opportunist feeding"
when bred in captivity, sunlight is not absorb as in the wild. there is not a lot of stress put on lighting/sunlight when it comes to the mice or rattys bred for feeding purposes.

2. the parasites and bacterias that are could be present in a feeder pinky.
in petstores and breeding facilities where the offspring is sold as feeders, the turnover is generally high, but they are only feeders, so the breeders do not take their rats or mice in when they get ill or have necropsies when they die. they are consider disposable.

3. rats and mice are notroius for tumors and short life spans. ask yourself if you knew in advance that a pinky had something wrong with it, whether you would feed that one or not. sadly since they are feeders, you don't get that option of an educated decision.

4. you have to ask yourself do they really need it and what is your reasoning for feeding them.
once everything is considered, then you can make the educated choice as to whether you want to or not.

Bourbon ,
Do you feed your gliders pinkys and if not what do you give your gliders when they are pregnant. I give mine mainly mealworms. Now I am not sure if I want to give them pinkys if there can be concerns about it.

It is very possible to have babies and never once give them a pinky. There are those that have been breeding far longer than myself and still have NEVER fed a pinky!! And have perfectly healthy joeys. I don't feed pinky's I don't have the heart to. I go in my local pet store and play with the pinky's. Or I did till they moved them to the back! They had a kid that stole a pocketful of pinkys. A young kid, well, he went to dinner, dad's like a police officer, and it was a fairly nice restaurant. Well the pinkys started making noises and mom and dad were like "what's that" so they find the pinkys and the kid said he took them because they were going to be eaten" in tears. So, they had to return the babies. But, after that they put the pinky's in the back. Like any baby, I want to hold them, and feed them, etc! I can't feed them to my babies. I just cant!
As well as not wanting to take the chances listed in B's post above, not knowing what they might be carrying etc. it's not worth the risk.

Chey ,
You are right about wondering if they carry anything, I asked the lady at Petland if they have had any problems with people coming back saying that the pinky they sold them killed their animal because it was ill or was carrying some kind of disease, the lady said no they havent had that problem. As for Prissy, she has had 2 litters, the first she had 2, this time she had 1 and I have never had a problem where she didnt take good care of her joeys and I didnt feed her pinkys. I have one more pinky in the freezer and I think that is going to be the last one I feed her.I think Prissy may be pregnant again right now and this joey is only like 3.5 weeks oop so I guess I was concerned that she may reject this next joey due to all the stress on her body so that is why I fed her one is so she will get more protein that she will need. I am off to Petsmart to get her some meal worms.

Dude, I have read that site, but thank you for supplying it again. May I point out that it says "suggest" and "possibility" and does not give any factual information or proof that this more than speculation. The only FACT in that sentence is that they are very nutritious.

Quote:

pinkys (although very nutritious we choose not to feed pinkies because of a few items that suggest feeding pinkies may increase the possibility of mothers eating their joeys. Pinkys are baby mice.)

As for bacteria, I have always been told that freezing kills most harmful bacterias and far lessens the chances of your glider getting something from the pinky, IF in fact it was infected with anything. I would say the benefits of the nutritional value in pinky's far out weigh a rumor of them eating their offspring because they "think" a joey is a pinky. While Shaz may have not bred gliders, I have and have never had my female eat her young because she thought it was a mouse. She never ate her young at all. She didn't raise them well, but that had nothing to do with whether pinkies were fed or not..lol

Just my two cents and I am not out to offend anyone here.

Gymnastmom, to answer your questions..

I did feed Baybe 1 pinky many years ago, I decided then that I would never do it again. as for the joey eating as I stated that is an old glider tale, in fact at the same time I gave Baybe one, I also gave Dytee, My daughters glider one, Baybe ate hers, Dytee on the other hand adopted hers, tried to shove it into her pouch and was trying to feed it BML to help it survive, a week later it died, and Dytee did not eat it then.. so again like I said just an old glider tale.

as for do I feed them now? NO WAY.. I guess for many reasons, the main ones being those listed above, I also think they look too much like a joey that in my heart I couldn't kill it or feed them.

as to what I do when Baybe is pregnant, that is simple, I offer her more BML, and she eats what she needs, The joeys get much of the nutrition before mom does, so by offering her more, she may eat more to help with what she needs, this has little to nothing to do with just extra proteins. this is a combination of all of her nutrients. calcium is also a big factor when they are preganant, as well as other nutrients. with the addition of what others are looking at with extra proteins, they fall to take into consideration that the ph levels are much much higher. Maria, did a search for varuious ca:ph ratios with pinkies/ratties and baby chicks at different ages. it was very interesting that the levels of ca:ph were seriously inverted. Most people won't feed a pinky at the age that is the best ratio. still not near a 2:1.

you stated..
Quote:

well anyway I guess I will just have to see what I
finally decide to do on this.

my intent isn't to sway you one way or another, but to make sure you look at all aspects before you make that final decision, and that final decision is all yours, when you make it, don't let it be a decision you second guess yourself with, decide, live with it, and move on.

good luck with your decision

Wow, that made me laugh, but it was also a little sad too! Food to one, little baby to another... one man's trash is another man's treasure, I guess! But it's a little sad to think of a glider trying to put a pinky in her pouch and feed it BML, and then it died... I don't know, great story though!

so much for the glider being able to indentify the pinky from her own joey. it goes to show it can work both ways dont you think?

I am glad that there has been several opinions about this, I also have never had a post that I did that has gotten 5 stars I guess I have posted something worth reading and replying to . Maybe this could be a good poll question, maybe not just on pinky mice but also on worms, crickets, wax worms and other insects and see what kinda percentage we get on all of them. Its just a thought.
Anyway thanks for all the replys, I hope we can keep them coming.

I want to give Prissy the last pinky mouse that I have, its in the freezer, I dont want to give it to her frozen, do I put it in the fridge this afternoon to let it thaw out so I can give it to her this evening? Do I put the bag in hot water to let it thaw out? Please let me know the best way to do this.
Thanks
