thats just it; gliders don't usually present with illnesses until the disease is in it's end stages. symptoms are so slight, if present at all, in the beginnings of most suggie afflictions & thats why it is imperative that you seek vet care at the FIRST sign if illness or difficulty! theyre so small that it doesnt take much to wipe em out as far as disease is concerned! vigilence is necessary to assure the continued health of your babies! even my pair that i'm not able to handle extensively, i always take care to get a good look at em when I'm hand feeding bugs, which is most nights! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumb.gif" alt="" />

Symptoms: Depressed looking, fails to groom so has an unkept appearance, sudden weight loss...may be from dehydration, loss of pink in nose, nose and feet as well as gums may be pale, refuses to eat or drink, sleeping too much, animal is cold and lathogic,seizures....falling over or unable to grip, vomiting and/or loose stool.

These are a few of the things to look for with a glider who may be ill. vet care is necessary and usually within a few hours as gliders hide their illness well...and by time you notice....time may be critical.

Every owner should at least have a wellness check done of the animal....within days of doing a purchase or rescue. Should a problem then arise...you will have a vet. To wait...till one has a problem may be too late. Most vets do not treat gliders and especially one whose owner is not an established client.

Yes, you can wipe them clean, either with a warm towel (squeeze out all the liquid) or q-tip. Be sure and dry them thoroughly so they don't catch a chill.

Sometimes you don't know at all--until the glider's dead. I've been into gliders since 1999, so I believe I'm experienced. In September, I lost 5 gliders to listeria. I found the 3rd one in the bottom of the cage, just moments from death. He died in my hand. It was heart wrenching, to lose so many gliders, and not know how to stop it. 4 of the gliders had post mortems, so they were trying desparately to help me, and finally, when the 4th glider died, they discovered listeria. It was awful, but I NEVER noticed any symptoms, even while studying my gliders closely. I'm glad we finally got an answer. Altho my gliders were treated medically for "KNOWN" illnesses in gliders, nothing worked until they were able to isolate the problem. Then they switched antibiotics to something sensitive to listeria, and my gliders stopped dying. Sorry to be such a downer, but sometimes you don't see ANYTHING at all. They are very good at hiding illness.
