[:"CC6699"]I thought I would post this to show you all what a horrible sound this is. This is the sound of my Bandit. It is a video but there is nothing on the screen, you will only hear the sound. The banging you hear is my rabbit, cuz she always wants to play with me.

Anyways, keep in mind, Bandit is not hurting himself when I took this clip. He has been making this noise for months and has never hurt himself, although I am still trying to help him as much as possible.

He stopped making this noise when I started feeding the Darcy diet. Today will be ONE WEEK since he stopped making that noise. I am very hopeful that this diet change will help him.

I warn you, this isnt a nice sound, it makes me cry to even hear it, although I am sure most of you won't cry, but it is very sad. You can listen to it HERE

Give it some time to load. [/]

Yes, it sounds like he is struggling or fighting with something. Poor baby.

I have not followed the Darcy diet...but isn't it a wet diet due to the ensure? Perhaps he was having problems with constipation if not eating enough wet things if on the BML.

Good to hear he has improved.

[:"CC6699"]Judie, he was on the Suncoast diet. I have thought about constipation, and I could see the insectivore fair maybe causing problems with his bowels. His bowels have always been normal, from what I had seen, and they are still normal now. I was really hoping the diet change would help him and so far it is working. We will see how everything goes, atleast we still have hope for him, although I try not to get my hopes up too high. [/]

Have you considered having a UA done on him? Does he have a mate...if not..maybe neutering would help especialy if he is a lone glider and is sexually frustrated?

If he is doing fine for now...then do not worry. However, should the problem suddenly flair up again...you may consider the above paragraph.

Is this always what it sounds like? It's not quite what I expected. I think this has to be absolutely the worst thing that can happen to a glider, so I try to learn as much about it as I can. I would have mistaken that noise for fighting.

That's the sound, Jessie! Any of us who have ever heard it will never forget it. Bourbon would be very interested in having a copy of this, I never managed to get Riker recorded (I couldn't bring myself to allow him to do it for fear of unreparable damage )but she did ask me to try if I had the opportunity. This could go a long way in helping people identify the noise a possible mutilator makes BEFORE permanent damage is done. It's kind of a crabbing, but with a hoarse, desparate note-and definitely doesn't sound like normal. Thanks for taking the time to do this-it could really help people. Good Job!

[:"CC6699"]Jackie, that is pretty much the sound. I have only heard Bandit so I am not sure what the variations sound like, but I am pretty sure that they all sound like that.

Jen, yes, I told Bourbon she could use this for the SM site. I wouldn't have taken the clip if Bandit was actually hurting himself while doing this. I knew he wasn't. I never really thought about getting a clip of it, until I was reading through some posts and saw that alot of people either confused it with fighting, or had no idea what sound to hear for at all.

He hasn't made the noise in 8 days, every since I did a diet change. That doesn't mean he will never do it again, but I am happy to see that for the time being, he is growing his hair back and seems to be gaining some weight. I just took a 4 hour nap with him, and listened to him bark in his sleep [/]

Jessie- I didn't mean to imply he might have been actually hurting himself -just that I was too afraid to take the chance since Riker had already done some minor damage. BTW-Riker has also been on the ensure diet since he was in the collar, though I can't say for certain it's diet since it was after we had him neutered. Both may play a role for all I know! In any case, I'm thrilled to hear he's improving-I worry about your little guy as much as mine! Keep up the good work, and don't hesitate to ask if there's anything I can help with!
-Isn't it so cool when they bark in their sleep like that? I think Riker does it because he knows I'll come running to get him!

My Flip was the same for a while. After Nora died back in October he started making the SM noise. I thought he was ok since he did not hurt himself at that point. However, on the 29th of December, I had to take him in for a severe SM attack. I am sure you're up to date with Flip's progress. If not, check out the thread. I had the same exact attitude as you do. Trust me, nobody knows the effects of SM better then I do as of now. At least I don't think they do....lol Watch him insanely closely. And, if he even makes one single noise again, put a collar ( I used a satellite not a e-collar ) on the glider IMMEDIATELY. Like I said, I thought Flip was ok until I had to rush him to emergency vet at 8pm December 29th. If I have learned one thing it's that you can't be too careful with a glider when SM is conerned. A little discomfort now, will lead to a lot of happy days later.

Oh, boy, you guys. This is such a great, informative post. Thank you for sharing the sound; I've always been curious. And thanks again, Francisco, for the reminder to be safe rather than sorry whenever in doubt. Everyone should have an e-collar handy, just in case.

Poor Bandit. I'm so sorry that he has to go through this. I know it must be heart wrenching for you to hear your poor baby going through that. Kudos to you for getting that sound recorded. As others have said, it may help someone in the future. Give little Bandit some (((Hugs))) from me and my fuzz butts. Hopefully the new diet will be the help that he needs to get past this problem.

Jessie:
It is so great to hear that bandit is doing better. What a relief to a certain degree that must be for you. Not to mention you are actually able to get a little sleep now.
I must say, when I listened to it sure enough it reminded me of pepper and bear in the morning,Pepper will give that hollering sound to bear and chase her if she tries to go in the pouch before he does! Very Very informative. Thanks.

If you want to know what a person is like, watch how he treats others.

You'll never know what the outcome is if you don't step up and try.

[:"CC6699"]Thanks for the support everyone! I do have e-collars here at home, to put on him, so I am definatly prepared. His cage is the only glider cage in my room, right next to my bed. I check on him every second of the day (that is, if he isnt actually with me). My dad and my sister are also familiar with the noise, and are instructed to take Bandit out ASAP when they hear it, and carry him with them.

Right now, Bandit is vet less. I had thought I found a vet, who said he was glider knowledgable, and turns out he has only seen one glider before, and that glider wasn't even ill. He has a problem running the tests and everything and I am afraid to take him to get him neutered by this guy. This is also the same vet that would not stay open 10 minutes later when Brandis was dying of dehydration.

I found an animal hospital that is fairly close to me, I am checking into their exotic experience.

Again, thank you for all the concern, Bandit has been a real trooper through all of this, and I will be by his side the whole way. [/]
