Since I can not seem to sell my joeys, I have decided to see if I can get a small colony together. I put all 6 joeys together in one cage, and they are getting along great. They range in age from 9 wks OOP to about 13 wks OOP. There are 3 males and 3 females. 2 males are brothers (Ross and Rachel's joeys), 2 females are sisters (Rowdy and Raven's joeys), and 1 brother-sister (Roz and Ruger's joeys). I am hoping that since they are together at this young of an age, they can all live peacefully together, like a colony in the wild, once they reach adulthood. I can only hope that they will sort themselves out without any major violence (ie...alpha male...alpha female), since they are so young. If they do start fighting, I have extra cages ready to go in an instant. They are housed in our room, so any fighting will be noticed quickly, and any action needed can be taken swiftly, so as not to let any harm come to any of them.

I hear you, John Same thing here ... gliders, gliders everywhere ....

Pretty soon I'll just put a screen door on the glider room

Guess we just made an excellent case for neutering males, hugh

lol..Friends fan, Rowdy?
I have a colony situation because my husband and kids won't allow me to sell any of our joeys so we have 4 in one cage, and doubles in two others. They are all neutered now, so hopefully no more babies...lol. I have thought of putting triples in two cages and leaving a double alone, but am not sure how they would react to that. I keep saying I will try "tomorrow" and always chicken out by then.

Funny how you start with 1 or 2 and end up with 8 or so...lol. Karen, case is made.

Hi all. I have 2 girls and 2 boys in one cage. The boys are neutered. if they get into a fight be prepaired for vicious bights. I tried to introduce one more boy but, Percy had other plans. He wasnt having any of it. He growled threw the cage and then got out and on the cage to fight with him. I grabbed him and it was 5 bites before I could get him off. He closed his eyes and bit and held on and then bit again. Good luck. This is not to discurage, but to warn so you do not loose a battle.

Yes! There are gliders everywhere! I say yes to too many people. Once upon a time I started with one, got him a friend, so I had two. Then I gladly took on some rescues. Tabitha has joeys in her pouch. And now, LOL I have agreed to take on a colony of 5! What am I going to do with 9 Sugar Gliders and a couple of joeys? Keep them! Is this a case of Glideritis? LOL. As for now, I am OFF of the glider market and I will not be getting anymore unless something happens.

I hope your colony works!

Do not think I would do a colony with intact males. Especially three of them. You need to at least neuter two of them...and if you are having a problem trying to locate homes for the little ones then perhaps neutering all the males is the best way to go. If you notice ...all those who responded to you...do have neutered males in their colonys.

Good Luck and have fun.

These are some excerpts taken from Candiflip's new site (I also saw the same info somewhere else, but I can't remember where it was). This is also what got me thinking that this might work.
quote:
......animals live in groups of up to seven adult males and females and their young, all of whom are related. These groups are mutually exclusive and territorial. There is usually a dominant male in each group of sugar gliders, who is responsible for most of the marking of the territory and the group. When another animal is detected that it does not belong to the group it is immediately and violently attacked. No fighting takes place beyond threatening behavior in the groups.

John....I beleive this behavior seen amongest colonies is in the wild. Yes, it is true....the alpha male has control over the group. If he becomes upset with another male ....then it is driven out of the group. What you have read from Candiflips site is common knowledge that has been learned from reading about gliders in their natural state. MacPearson's book comes to mind as well as a few others that I have read.

When the gliders are caged....the male that is to be driven off....has no place to go...thus they fight and other members of the group will join in to help defend the group and amongest the confusion....it has been known that males and sometimes a female with little ones is killed to.

Gliders have several acres or so that is their own territory. Gliders confined to cages....as far as I know...do not have this much room to live in. Doing a colony of several intact males is not a very wise thing to do for all the gliders mentioned due to the territorial issues that male gliders exhibit when all caged together in the same housing.

This will only work for long term...if you neuter all the males except for one. And if you cannot find homes for babies...then you might want to consider neutering all of the males. Also, you have one pair of gliders that are siblings and are not same sex. This male needs to be neutered so they do not inbreed.
