[:"red"] [/] HELP!!! My baby girl is 3 yrs old and she had to have her tail amputated. I have tried many different things including Lidocaine, bandage spray (tastes bad)and bactine, all from the vet, but she is determined to bite her poor little nub. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get her to leave it alone??? She has babies on the way and I have to let her clean herself, but she is determined to get her tail. PLEASE HELP?? The vet has given up!!!

Can you possibly have her fitted for an e-collar until the damaged area heals completely? It would be hard with babies coming, how long until they are oop? I know ppl with more experience will be along soon to help. The only advice I really have is to keep her with you so you can keep an eye on her to stop her chewing when she starts to do so, maybe carry her in your bra or a pouch under your shirt. I am going to move this to Health & Hygiene so yuo get more responses. Good luck, and let us know how she is doing...

I have fashioned a kind of head gear out of a dixie cup, by cutting a hole in the bottom just big enough to get her head through, it works great but when I take it off for her to eat, drink and such she goes for her tail.......the babies aren't in the pouch yet, she due to give birth in a couple of days....and I don't know if she will need to cup off all the time to take care of them.

well, if they haven't made it to the pouch yet, you have approx. 60-70 days to get this cleared up before joeys come oop. I would really suggest taking her back to the vet and having a good e-collar fashioned for her, even tho the dixie cup may be working right now, you need something longer term. If your normal vet won't treat her, take her to another that will. Good luck, and keep us updated

Well, I just got back from the vet and the news isn't good. It looks like Pixie (my baby) is going to need surgery.....again. The area in question has developed complications and she will have to have further surgery. In about 2 1/2 months after the babies are oop she will have to undergo surgery. Needless to say I cried. The surgery is very risky but she is in pain and there are no other alternatives.....she can't live the rest of her life like this. Sam

Oh, my! So, did the vet give you pain meds to give Pixie in the meantime? If so, will whatever he gave be safe for the joey(s)? Can she wait that long (if there are no pain meds) before having the surgery? I understand the reason for waiting, but it seems like she can maybe have more joeys down the road, and maybe she should have the surgery sooner rather than later? I don't know anything about this sort of stuff. Sending and prayers your way that everything will turn out okay.

Oh dear, the poor little thing. She's been through so much already (and so have you)! I hope something can be done about her pain. Sending hugs and prayers for you both. I hope her babies are born healthy and whole, and that she survives her surgery.

I am sorry.. It will be ok, as long as your vet is optimistic about her surgery, try not to worry too much I do wonder why he wants to wait so long tho...that's almost 4 1/2 mnths before the surgery. Is it because of the joeys? If so, you may just think about what is more important, her health and the chance to have joeys later on, or the babies right now. discuss with your vet and good luck. We will keep you both in our thoughts.

If this is the end of the tail...chewing usually means she got it caught in something or broke it. Chewing on it...after surgery...is usually from pain. Joeys in pouch...no e-collar. Mother has to be able to clean her pouch and stimulate the little ones. With an e-collar on she will not be able to clean the little ones nor her pouch area thus will be a dangerous situation for the mother and joeys. Suggest using a pain med at home for pain management. Torb or Metacam from my experience....can be given and is usually very effective. If the pain is controled...the vicious circle of chewing stops. Call your vet and discuss the options of which med to use to control the pain. The Health and Welfare of the mother should always...come first. If the babies are compromised in order to get the mother over the hump....she will have healthy joeys in the future. Lose the female...and all is lost.
