Mr. Wiggles managed to burn himself on his heating pad somehow. This morning he started tearing at it so I took him to the vet. They told me to put neosporin with pain releiver on the burn and to give him .05cc of baby motrin. Does that sound right??

I want to assure you that the wound is small, the burn is bigger, but it is clean and I think he will be fine. I have switched him from his incubator to a rept, so no more worries of another burn. I had a reptile heating pad on the bottom of a 10gal tank. He must have crawled under all the fleece at some point to get burned.

I just want to make sure that I am doing the right thing before I go get the meds for him. Thanks!

Lynsie, if you can get some Silver Sulfadiazine (also called Silvadene) or SSD cream, that is excellent for burns and also works as an antibiotic to keep any possible infection at bay.. I have no idea about using the motrin on a baby as small as he is, or gliders at all for that matter.. If you want me to send you a snuggle safe heating pad, lmk and it's on the way for him! I just wish I was closer to help, I have all the stuff you may need on hand...

I have no experience with burns on suggies, however in humans fluid, electrolytes and calories are all lost through seepage from the wound and need to be replaced.

I have no direct experience with invalided joeys, however, I have seen a number of people post that ensure is a good food for suggies who are not eating well. I have also seen recommendations to thin down their regular diet and feed it by syringe. I personally have used honey and water or maple syrup and water by syringe to perk one up enough to get better food into them. One good thing about sugars is that small amounts are absorbed through the mucous membranes of the mouth and small amounts will reach the blood stream even if it is not swallowed. What is swallowed is absorbed directly from the stomach. It is fast and can give energy quickly. At this point the name of the game is calories. Get calories and fluids into him.

I would also make sure he does not get dehydrated by giving him pedialyte by syringe. A human burn victim dehydrates very quickly and needs both the fluid and the elecrolytes.

I have no experience with motrin in suggies, but apparently your vet does and feels this is a good choice for Mr. Wiggles.

Poor little thing, burns are so painful. I know that everyone says not to use the neosporin with numbing in case they lick it and numb their mouths and bite their tongue or cheek. That is a very real danger.

However, burns are very painful. If you use the one with numbing, watch him really carefully and dont let him lick it. I am sure it will help with the pain.

He needs to be kept warm. You can fill a large soda bottle with hot water, not hot enough to burn him, wrap it in fleece and put in the rept with him. He can snuggle up next to it for warmth and it will radiate warmth around it. Refill it as it cools.

Keep him warm, keep him fed, keep fluids in him and give him his meds. Dont forget lots of snuggles.

Keep us posted

Godspeed

He is warm and he is eating fine. My concern is treating his burn.

Thanks Anita!!

I am trying to get the vet to give me metacam instead of using motrine, hopefully she will approve. And I am going to use Aloe Vera instead of neosporin on the burn.

Aloe Vera can be very helpful for healing burns. However, it does not prevent infection or seal the wound against fluid loss. If you use the aloe vera, apply the neosporin after it dries. Also you must be careful not to include any juice from the inside lining of the skin of the aloe as it is a strong cathartic.

In human infants, narcotics are given sparingly as they depress the respiratory center, which is vulnerable in infants. Drugs like ibuprofen are safer for infants and in addition to relieving the pain, are anti-inflammatory....they reduce the swelling.

What Becki said is very good advice - Silvadine is a miracle drug, if you can get it! When I had 2nd and 3rd degree burns from hot coffee (at home, not McDonalds, no money frown - ha, ha) I used it and don't have a mark left on me! I've been told to use it on little babies too, so it is fairly mild!

Please don't take this the wrong way....but WHY did he have unsupervised access to a heating pad??

And why do I not see an ecollar mentioned? NEVER put neo with pain if they can get to it.

I got the aloe vera gel and metacam to give him. Thanks for the advice everyone. I will keep you updated on how he does. He is acting fine and not messing with it right now so I think he is going to be okay.

I got Lynsie on the phone with Me, Bourbon, Mary, and Charlie. We got her to Chris' to get into an ecollar, and getting this little one on topical meds for both pain and infection. If Lynsie hasn't updated, I'll try to later at work...right now she's at Glidrz5's and getting the little one taken care of.

Okay, poor Wiggles is in the e-collar with topical meds on the burn. I feel so bad but I know that it is best for him. I have to give my thanks to Jen, Chris, Bourbon, Mary, Charlie, and Anita; I don't know what I would have done with out you guys. THANK YOU!!!! Wiggles has to be in the e-collar for 2 days, so I will keep everyone updated on his progress.

We had her go without the Metacam...Bourbon, Mary, Charlie and I all agree it will do more harm than good-he's just too young and that stuff is extremely hard on the liver, even for an adult glider. He's getting a mix of Neosporin with pain and vit. E on it, and she'll get the silver sulfazadine cream (SSD) from the vet in the AM...or Chris will get it from hers. After the 48 hours the pain should go down for him-burns are nasty with pain, but doesn't usually last too long-once that pain is past, he can heal easier.

Thank you, Chris (Glidrz5) for helping with the collar-I know you've never actually done it before, but you've seen me and Bourbon at the SGGA, and you done good! thumb

Jen, I just thank God that I watched the E-collar demonstrations at the SGGA. Without that & the collars I got from you at the SGGA 2 years ago, I would have been lost & begging for help. As it was I had what I needed on hand & was somewhat prepared to use it. Nervous, but I had an idea of what to expect. So Thank You to you and Bourbon for showing me how.
To everyone else on GC, if you don't have an E-Collar on hand, I strongly recommend that you get one for your glider first aid kit. Having it there & ready made things go much smoother.

Im so sorry this has happened. I also have a rep heating pad in the bottom of my cage. I have a sock over it, and my girl just loves it. She's always sitting on it.

Is this OK??

He is doing great. He got his e-collar off a couple of times last night but Jonathan caught it right away each time, he stayed up all night with him. The burn is healing really quickly and I am hoping to be able to take him out of the e-collar by tommorrow night.

Wiggles managed to get his e-collar off again so I took that opportunity to clean him up a bit. Once I got all the gunk off his chest, he looked much better. It is not red anymore, I think it will be almost completely healed by tomorrow. I wish I could get a pic but I am wainting for hubby to upload all his stuff off of my camera.

Yes, he REALLY does live up to his name. I don't know how many times I have had to tell people that "he is not called Wiggles for no reason" lol.

He has had the e-collar off since about 3pm and has not went after the burn at all. It is almost completely healed. I am so glad that I made it through this without any big problems.

A HUGE thanks to all those that helped me. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!! I could not have done this without everyones help.
