I know that many times over the years of my being here on the board I have read about gliders grieving and how heart-wrenching it is. I had prayed to never have to go through it with my gliders, but right now I am. As many of you know, two weeks ago Monday, my Cricky passed over to the Rainbow Bridge. Sadly, his mate Pika has been grieving ever since. Every morning I hear her crying and crying for him. I have tried multiple times to get a video of her so that others can know what this sounds & looks like, but until this morning, I was unsuccessful. I finally got a video of her this morning. (Please ignore the background noises of the bathroom fan and the other cage of gliders running in their Wodent Wheel...) the lighting is not great, but you can still see her running around searching for Cricky. Towards the end of the video is when she starts crying again... Be warned that it is heart-wrenching. Her poor little heart is breaking and she just doesn't understand that he's gone forever... Also, Pika is blind from cataracts and has residual paralysis from a bout with HLP last year, so her movements are jerky and she stops often to sniff the air... Pika Grieves

Thats seriously one of the saddest things I have ever seen. Poor Pika! I have only ever heard baby gliders cry. Can you give her a young male to love on, or to love on her? You think she has too many problems to try and find her a new friend? Im just afraid she might die of lonelyness too! Like when old couples die within a few days or weeks of one another because the bond is so strong. They kind of stay alive for one another when they are old and sick. Don't you think? Thanks for the video, but I think now its going to haunt me all day.

Oh, I want to cry too! When I was playing the video and she started crying, my cage of 5, with Mariah in it started calling to her when they heard her. Can you find her a friend? I wish you were closer, I have a lone glider that was rescued from a pet store and was recently neutered and needs a friend. None of the cages here are accepting him and its so sad. He needs someone too. (((((hugs))) to you and Pika.

I wish I could give her a friend, but I'm afraid to put anyone in with her at this point. With her being blind and also having the paralysis issues, I'm afraid that a new, younger glider would do her more harm than good... I'm open to suggestions. Has anyone ever tried to put a younger glider in with an older, invalid glider??? She's really breaking my heart every day...

Perhaps you can check all the rescues for a glider in similar condition and age or at least similar condition. I have heard plenty of stories about invalid gliders needing homes but no one wants one with physical challenges. Perhaps you can give Pika a friend and a home to an unwanted glider at the same time. Most rescues will do animal safe shipping anywhere in the continental US so you have plenty of rescues to check. I would worry that the stress of loosing her mate would be too much for her to handle without another friend.

Oh Suz that video is so heart wrenching. It brings me to tears. Pika looking all over for her cage mate and then that cry, it is something that no one can forget.
How are you holding up? That has to be hard on you to hear and to watch. I would be crying everyday with Pika. Were all here if you need us. Just remember that.

Oh, Suz If there was a way I could get the girls to you, I would...they accepted Gim with all his issues. A 8 wk OOP joey might be just the thing, tho...someone for her to look after, who would kind of bond with her as a mother figure at first...might be an idea, and help distract her that Cricky isn't there, give her someone to love and cuddle with. Poor Pika-wish I could give you both hugs.

Oh Suz, that is so heart wrenching. I remember when Peepers lost Jeepers and she grieved as well. The worst was when after it had been a couple of weeks, I did a stupid thing and let her go in the pouch that still smelled like Jeepers. She just chattered with joy when she first went in and smelled Jeepers, then kept looking around the pouch (it was a big pouch, with a bunch of blankies in it) and realized she wasn't there. I took her out quickly, but the damage was done. She hiss-barked ALL NIGHT and was still doing it in the morning when my hubby got up and went down there. He asked about it because she's usually not a barker and she wouldn't stop.
Did Pika get to say her goodbyes to Cricky by seeing the body after he was gone?
Peepers has recovered from her grief now, and she frequently chatters at Piper when she first goes in the pouch. Even though the initial introductions were a little rough with them, I think Peeps is very happy to have a friend again.
I like the idea of a special needs glider, but it may be difficult since both of them would have the insecurities of their condition and may be defensive at first. Or they may each recognize that the other has issues as well and get along right away. It's a gamble, I guess but worth it in the long run if it makes Pika happy. How old is Pika?

That was so sad Suz. Absolutely heart wrenching. For those who think that animals do not have feelings...well, this is proof. That poor sweet girl.

Gizmo makes that sound fairly often. I've only had him about a month, do you think he could be grieving for his parents and twin sis? How old is Gizmo? It is not uncommon for joeys to cry, especially when they are first brought home. Yes, it would be from grieving for his parents and any siblings. If your Gizmo is crying like this, then he needs to be given a companion or he needs to spend more time with you...
~~~~~~~~
Sundra, Pika is about 13 years old, I believe... Yes, I did allow Pika to see Cricky's body after he passed over. However, within seconds she realized he was dead and she started whimpering and sniffing around, then nosing at him and whimpering more. So, I didn't let her spend much time with him because I thought it was doing more harm than good.
~~~~~~~~
Everyone, I am seriously considering getting Pika a new companion at this point. However, I am waiting for a reply from Mary H (I sent her a PM to ask for her expert opinion) on whether it is advisable or not. And, if so, whether a joey or another special needs glider would be the better option. My concerns regarding a joey are that Pika's cage is set up specially for her due to her special needs and so there aren't the typical toys nor the wheel that most joeys would need to keep their activity levels as high as needed. I'm afraid a joey would get bored in her cage. It is just right for Pika (and was good for Cricky, too), but would not be good for a healthy, active glider. Again, I'm open to suggestions and to all advise at this point in time for her... Thanks for all your love and concern... We both deeply appreciate it.

As sad and hard as that video is to watch - it sure does remind us all how much these little ones feel human emotion. Suz, I wish you luck in finding Pika a companion (if that's what you decide to do). Until then, give that little girl a few extra treats and kisses from me

Maybe a very young glider would be safe with her, like 8-12 weeks OOP. They would look to her for comfort because they would be so young and it would really suprise me if they would hurt her. It might bring her some comfort, or tap into some old mothering instincts in her. Just a thought. Please let us know if you find someone for her. I will keep my ear out for any retired gliders too, just in case. Im so sorry, I feel just terrible for her. Sending love your and pikas way....

I knew I shouldn't have watched it, but I did anyway. Now I can't stop crying for poor little Pika and you. How sad for you to have to watch her go through that every day, and how sad for her that she can't find Cricky. Sending both of you , good thoughts, and prayers.

Oh, poor Pika... that almost made me cry. I'm lucky in that Kadabra doesn't really seem to be grieving... I left Abra in the cage with him for a while so that he could say his goodbyes, and I think that really helped him accept it. He's been much more cuddly with me ever since-- I think that's his way of dealing with things.

My deepest sympathies to you, your husband and especially Pika.
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid sideways, chocolate in one hand, martini in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming WOOOO HOOOO, WHAT A RIDE!!!
