I take my gliders very seriously. Before I buy gliders, I make arrangements for their care is something were to happen to me. Then when breeding, I find homes for the gliders well before they are born. I'm only on my first litter and homes lined up for at least 5 babies if/when they come. And most importantly, I will only breed gliders that are worth breeding. For example, I have a male with possible liver/kidney problems. Instead of risking him ever producing babies that could have his health problems, he is going to be neutered. There's a lot to think about when breeding an animal. I luckily have the time, money, and relationships to ensure each and every glider I have a quality life.

[:"CC6699"] That is a very good article! The USDA license fee, I have done some reasearch and I don't think I have come across a number as high as $80. What part of the US is he talking these estimated prices from? Just curious!
*Edit - nvm, I see he is from Seattle, WA![/]

David lives in Seattle - Washington A few years ago my USDA Caretaker (Joe) whispered to me that a USDA license may not be neccessary for Hobby breeders with only one or two pairs of breeding <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/littleglider.gif" alt="" />'s - I no-longer breed & the first & foremost reason is I get to attached to each <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/littleglider.gif" alt="" /> joey! I have not checked with Joe but plan to soon for an answer for those that breed <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/littleglider.gif" alt="" />'s in my former state of Michigan. David's article is just a warning to future <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/littleglider.gif" alt="" /> breeders & not directed to anyone here in particular!

Fees can be as high as $80. It just depends on how much you make. However, with $1000 in sales the fee is not $80 as far as I understand. My first year was $30 w/out ever having sold any. I don' have a copy of their fee scale on me tho to check.

Good article, I wish more breeders of animals would read articles like that! I see so many sad stories from people breeding blindly and unprepared for the possibilities. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

Wow, interesting article! Thanks for sharing! I don't breed, but I get asked lots of questions about my gliders.

Great article Pockets! Lots of good logical information. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumb.gif" alt="" /> I am not a <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/littleglider.gif" alt="" /> breeder, I rescue <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/littleglider.gif" alt="" /> and there is quit a bit of information there that a person could use for the consideration of a pet <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/littleglider.gif" alt="" />

Really a good article I wish more people would read it before rushing out and buying gliders as money making joey producing machines.

Another point, if you are just out for the money, is your gliders don't have to cooperate with you. I know someone who bought a trio that had babies regularly. She lost one female. (it got outside and ran away) So she put the two she had left with her other two females. (I'm supprised no one died as she just put them in together) It had been over 7 months and no babies <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/evil.gif" alt="" />. She is not USDA lic. either. So I feel <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yelclap.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/multi.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yelclap.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/multi.gif" alt="" /> God must be helping the gliders <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Excellent article pockets. Thanks for sharing! Every glider website should link that article in the breeding section.
