As many of you know my Sydney has been battling a pouch infection for several months now. It was at it's worst during the SGGA this summer & has gotten to the point where we are keeping it controlled. However, the infection is still there and all cultures we've done have been positive for bacteria. This last time we sent the culture off to be tested:
Quote:
BACTERIOLOGY RESULTS
AEROBIC CULTURE
SPECIES.............Misc
BREED...............
ANIMAL ID...........Sydney (Sugar Glider)
SPECIMEN #..........Swab-Pouch
ORGANISM ID.........PSEUDOMONAS SPP
COMMENTS............The growth of the isolate was heavy on direct culture

ANAEROBIC CULTURE
SPECIES.............Misc
BREED..............
ANIMAL ID..........Sydney (Sugar Glider)
SPECIMEN #.........Swab-pouch
ORGANISM ID..........NO SIGNIFICANT GROWTH

Well, we know what it is now, but can someone explain to me what it means?

My vet said it was sensitive to Baytril but the oral Baytril we gave her initially didn't work so this time we're going with a topical drop.

OK, not sure this is going to be much help, but it's a shot. Pseudomonas is most commonly found as the cause of inner ear infections (in dogs and cats). Most common causes are excess moisture and allergies. The most important thing and many timew it's the hardest thing, is to find the underlying cause of what's causing the bacterial infection.. I'll see what I can find for you, but it'll be a little while later, I have to go to the bus station and wait for my sister to get here from Milwaukee.

Pseudomonas is a common bacteria in our environment. It thrives in warm moist environments like a suggies pouch. Since the interiour of the pouch has no blood circulating through it antibiotics given by mouth can not fight the bacteria living in the pouch.

Swabbing the pouch with the antibiotic drops or dropping them into the pouch will put the antibiotic in contact with bacteria so they can kill the pseudomonas. The drops will need to be spread throughout the pouch.

This part of the test identified the bacteria present. There may be another part of the test results that will identify the antibiotic that will kill the bacteria.

Godspeed

Angelskates is right. I found some additional information as well. Also:
Quote:

That would be the "S" in C & S smile

The part that identifies the bacteria is the CULTURE itself. The SENSITIVITY is where they add different antibiotics to the organisms they grew, and see which ones kill it the best.

It is a mobile (able to move about), flagellated bacteria (another flagellate most have probably heard of is giardia), and this one is a Gram Negative bacteria.

Most of what I've found on this bacteria states it is present in food and water...BUT usually doesn't colonize when the immune system is healthy. One of these also mentions that they can colonize "moist skin areas"-and a pouch would qualify. Because a glider's pouch is so contained that may put gliders into a slightly different category than other mammals with this, though, since most animals and people don't have a pouch.

Most Pseudomonas are naturally RESISTANT to penicillin and related beta-lactam antibiotics, but SOME are sensitive to piperacillin, imipenem, tobramycin, or ciprofloxacin. I'll have to do some digging to find out exactly where Baytril (enrofloxacin) fits with those, and see if I can find anything on what might be effective should that fail.

For now, here are some webpages on Pseudomonas:

I do have the list of medications that they mentioned. I can post it if you'd like. Out of that list, my vet chose to go with Baytril & has a topical form of it for me to use in her pouch. Syddie does NOT appreciate this expecially since she needs to have it applied 2x a day for the next 2 weeks. But hopefully it will finally eradicate the nasty little bacteria bugs.

Not necessary, unless you want to-for some reason I thought that was asked somewhere, but could just be me. I really hope this does it for her, Chris...poor little thing's been thru enough with that pouch! hug2

Sorry guys, it's hard to tell how things are going. Syd is being a trooper tho. I know it's hard for her to be restrained & have meds squirted into her pouch 2x a day but she is handling it well. Jen....your nail bags work well for that as well. I tried folding her up in it before we treated her pouch & she was much less stressed than other times. She also didn't tense her stomach muscles up as much so it made placing the meds that much easier.
Kristin, I'd post a picture, but there's honestly not alot to see. The main indicator is that the fur around Syds pouch is stained kind of a dark coffee color rather than being fluffy & white.

Well, Ms Syd went back to the vets today for her checkup. She was such a little angel! Not one crab out of her, she even chuckled at the Dr when he was examining her. He was impressed that in the month since he's seen her that she's gained so much weight. My little girl is up nearly 15 grams from Nov 10th! Then he turned around & asked how she was eating LOL as if he couldn't tell smile He took another culture today & if it shows bacteria here in town, he's going to send it off again for a culture & sensitivity. Overall tho he said her pouch isn't looking as inflamed & looks pretty good. But the pseudomonus is sneeky & can lurk in corners just waiting to pop out again. So until he knows for sure we continue with her topical meds 2x a day.

I'm glad to hear that! Is there any difference in the discoloration at all? Keep up with the meds, and let us know what the vet finds. smile

I don't know that there's a change in the color Jen, but then it may be that I'm too close to the situation to really tell. All I do know is that Ms Syd is feeling a LOT better now & looks awsome (clean fur, bright eyes, bright white chest, fluffy tail) Until you look at her tummy you'd never know that anything was wrong with her.
