My glider sucrose has passed on this evening at around 7:45 on December 8th, 2006. Although the accident was preventable, there was little to be done.

I also own a 2 year old Greyhound puppy, and somehow Sucrose managed to escape from his cage, and then my mother went in my room to get something I asked of her, and he must have escaped and caught my dog's attention. You can figure out the rest of what happened.

The only thing I could think of is that the main door was stuck up so there was enough room for Sucrose to get out. He had escaped before, but there was no evidence on how he did it.

Point is, is that all sliding cage doors should be secured. Sugar Gliders are not dumb animals, and they eventually can figure things out, especially very young ones like Sucrose was. He was very adventureous and loved to run around everwhere, even though I limited him to my own bedroom, which is big for a glider.

Lets hope we can all learn from this mistake of myself, and my parents. When gliders are in a spot where they can get out of, that you take precaution so they do not, expect and be wary of them.

Rest in peace Sucrose.

-Phil

Phil,
I'm very sorry for your loss of Sucrose... Know that he's now at the Rainbow Bridge awaiting you and that he's happy and whole there.
hug2 hug2 hug2

I also wanted to tell you that I admire your courage in admitting how the accident happened and to thank you for the reminder to all of us to make sure our cages are 100% Houdini-proof.

I'm so sorry, I lost Schiz sister in much the same way. Mine was a faulty latch in a new cage that I hadnt noticed. My boyfriends cat found her before I did. I felt awful.

Don't let the guilt overwhelm you though. As hard as we try accidents happen. We can only learn from our mistakes.

I'm trying not to think about it, although it is kind of hard. I'm sure you all know the love I had for him from with your own gliders.

I would like to get another glider, maybe around christmas or new years. Because I really do miss him licking my face, even though I found it annoying. And he hasn't even been gone 24 hours yet (in 15 minutes or so, it will be).

If anybody in the lower New York, or tristate area has any gliders, let me know.

As soon as I get a new glider, the cage is going to get twist-tied closed, so unless glider learn how to take plastic twisty things and untwist them, they aren't gonna get out. Either that, or chew through the aluminum or tin wire that is in them.

Thanks again to everyone.

Oh Phil, I am so sorry for your loss.
I need to put something on my slideup doors thats for sure, I have 6 of them on the cage and so far they have not figured them out but will soon.
Today they will have clips added.
Please don't feel guilty. Accidents happen.
Big hugs sent your way.

As time goes by and my loves pass. I will forever be greatfull for the time we had together. I will see you soon my loves.
