One of my pairs recently had joeys. They were out of pouch and doing well. I've never had problems with joeys before, and didn't pay close enough attention.

A couple of days ago, I noticed that they seemed a little less filled out that other joeys I've had in the past. I decided that "in a few days" I'd start to supplement their feed with baby BML. Last night, I began to get a little more worried, as one of them seemed to be growing, and the other one seemed to be losing weight. He was still active, though, and I decided that I would supplement them starting today.

This morning, the little one had his ears down (never a good sign), and eyes closed. I was alarmed, and called my vet (after talking to Judie), and was on my way to inject him with fluids to keep him hydrated while I got started on the supplemental feeding.

It was too late. When I got home, he was gone.

I'm so sad, and that's heightened because while I don't know what caused his death, I could have at worst made him more comfortable, and at best, saved him.

My "Real Stories" warning in this is: while gliders have a short window in which to get help, joeys have even less.

Please, if you're going to take on the responsibility of raising joeys:

1. Be prepared with all the things needed to help out if a joey gets in trouble (I usually have lactated ringer available, but had thrown out an old supply that was dated and hadn't replaced it),

2. Weigh your joeys regularly to make sure they're doing okay - don't assume you'll see any changes -- don't wait for the "eyeball" test to tell you there's a problem

3. Act IMMEDIATELY when something doesn't seem right. Not tomorrow.

Goodbye, little guy. You deserved better than you got from me.

<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" /> I am so sorry Lucy.... I lost my little boy (Alli's brother) by not realizing until too late what needed to be done. It is a human mistake, and we are all susceptible to those... Thankfully I saved Alli, and you have the other as well to help and to ease this pain with. Maybe something was wrong internally and there may not have been anything you could have done anyway.....but it doesn't make it hurt less, I know..

Again, I am so sorry.... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" />

Im so so sorry.
<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" />

I wish I could say or do something to make you feel some better.... its so hard on us when we lose little ones... so heartbreaking. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/upset.gif" alt="" />
Im so sorry...
I know though without a shadow of a doubt that you are a wonderful Glider Parent!!! Its times like this when we think... we could have done this or could have done that. Dont beat yourself up about it, like Melissa mentioned, maybe something was wrong with the little Guy and it was just his time. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/heartpump.gif" alt="" />

Im so very very sorry... I know your heart must ache.
Much much love to you and a prayer that you be comforted...if I was there Id squeeze you and give you the biggest hug ever! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" />
Let us know how the other wee one progresses when you can. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Love you Lucy... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/heartpump.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" />

I'm so sorry! There probably wasn't a whole lot you could do so don't abuse yourself over this! Only mother nature knows the real answer. I hope you get many happy, healthy joeys in the future! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" />

<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" />Oh, Lucy, I am so sorry...I know no words make this feel any better, but by sharing your experience you have helped someone else help a joey, they will remember your post when the time comes.

Lucy, I am so sorry that you had to go through this. I know how you feel, I have been in a similar situation, but you must remember that he is in a lovely place now. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/heartpump.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/heartpump.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/heartpump.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/heartpump.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/heartpump.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" />

[:"blue"] Lucy,
I am so very sorry this has happened to you. It is such a terrible thing to go through, and we always feel so guilty.

Posting your story, no doubt, will save another glider's life and help the rest of us to be a little more alert when we "think" something may not be quite right.

It's just so hard to know for sure. Again, I am so very sorry. [/]
