Hi, Recently I purchased some "Prairie Chicken & Turkey Raw diet for Cats and Dogs" for my, well, cats and dogs. It's a frozen patty with a bunch of different stuff in it. My dog likes it very much, but, ofcourse, my glider LOVES it. But I'm not sure if I should let him have it, if it might be detrimental, or if it might be good for him! It's got: Chicken, Turket, Turkey Liver, Turket Hear, Carrots, Sweet Potatoes, Broccoli, Lettuce, Spinach, Ground Flax Seeds, Chicken Eggs, "Montmorillonite", Dried Kelp, Salmon Oil, Cold Pressed Olive Oil, Apple Cider Vinegar, Parslet, Honey, Persimmons, Blueberries, Duck Eggs, Pheasant Eggs, Quail Eggs, Garlic, Alfalfa Sprouts, Barley Sprouts, Millet Sprouts, Quinoa Sprouts, Wheat Sprouts, Inulin (Extract of Chicory), Grapefruit Seed Extract, Rosemary, Sage, and Clove. ... Whew! It lists in min. protein at 13%, fat at 6, fiber at 2. Anyone want to ring in? See anything on that list that's especially a no-no? Thanks for your help, Joe!

Are you planning on using this stuff as a treat or as a major component of your glider's diet?? Beside this " diet" what other food are you feeding to your gliders? Garlic is listed as a component and could be harmful to your glider. Most glider owners will tell you to avoid it totally; but we really don't know if there is enough garlic in this material to be harmful. There appear to be a lot of low calcium/high phosphorus ingredients in this " diet." Not an ideal situation unless you are feeding a good calcium supplement as well. I notice this stuff is called "RAW." If you are going to feed this stuff it would not be a bad idea to thoroughly cook it first. You might want to review the material on the GC diet pages to familiarizes yourself with some of the commonly accepted glider diets.

That seems odd that it would include "raw" chicken and turkey. Even with dogs and cats, you should always cook meat first. Also, as a general rule spices of any kind should be left out of the glider diet. That means no garlic, rosemary, sage, clove, ect. I don't see any problem feeding it as an occasional snack, providing it is fully cooked.

Thanks for your advice. The diet was highly recommended by my vet for the cats and dogs to serve as is. The gliders get Zookeeper's Secret as their staple and then fruits and vegetables with calcium supplement powder, but they get so excited when I feed the dog that I felt bad leaving them out of a little treat of it. I didn't know about garlic though, so, thanks, I'll deny 'em! :-)

If the sugar gliders get exicted when you feed the dog maybe you should feed the dog in another area. Also take a look at the diet you are giving your gliders. If they are craving the dogs food they may be missing something in their diet. Choose one of the proven diets for sugar gliders and stick with it. Charlie H

A lot of veterinarians using natural treatment for dogs & cats will recommend the "raw" diet. It takes dogs & cats back to a time when their species were wild. They always ate their food raw, and they got their veggies from whatever their prey had eaten. It has been documented that feeding a raw diet has reversed kidney disease in dogs & cats. Check out information by Dr. Pitcairn, Celeste Yarnall, and Anitra Frazier. Though good for cats and dogs, I don't think the raw diet would be good for gliders. I know the garlic wouldn't be!! I prepare a raw diet for my cats using Deistel Turkey, ground. I also use a some ground Deistel Turkey, boiled in water, for my gliders as a protein source. It gives me another option from the egg, yogurt, etc. group. Good luck. Sue1

Quote:
.....as a general rule spices of any kind should be left out of the glider diet.....

A lot of people repeat this idea as if it is a proven gospel fact. To the best of my knowledge, however, garlic is the only spice for which there is any scientific or anecdotal evidence of a harmful consequences of ingestion. Onion, chocolate and rhubarb, while not spices are other items that, likewise, have actual proof of harmful effects. Foods like lima beans, soy, corn, citrus and etc., I personally put in a different category; but [:"purple"] "where to draw the line" [/] is, admittedly, not an easy task. If anyone has substantive information on other "foods" that could be harmful to gliders, I think we all would like to hear about it. Let's not do it here, however. Please start a new thread so we can keep this one "on topic." If one does not already exist, perhaps it would be a good idea for GC to create a list of foods that are problematic for gliders, a description of why the particular food item is not appropriate and a subjective evaluation of how reliable the judgment is.

I don't know that ALL spices are bad for pets. But I do know that some are, specifically garlic and nutmeg. Many times food packaging doesn't list every spice, but will say simply "spices". So better safe than sorry.

Thanks Mage, Sue... lol. Yes, a couple of people have responded that sounded a little overly concerned. Who knew such casual query would produce such a flurry? ;-) I mean, the gliders also get excited in there are peanuts nearby too, but this isn't a sign of a deficiency-- they like things that taste good!
