[:"purple"] Friday night, Nick and I had the scariest moment of our lives when we lost Aki! It was around 9:30 pm and I was making food for the suggies when we noticed that we could only hear one glider. We saw Lego, but no sign of Aki-- it was really weird, because Aki always has to know what we're doing, and you can hardly walk across the apartment without getting jumped on from above. We searched for about one hour, and we could hear her scurrying around! We looked in the couch, and finally we just assumed that she got herself stuck in the couch. So I was laying on the ground, looking up into the couch, and all of a sudden, I heard her scurrying again, only underneath me!!!! I yelled, "she's under the floor! She has to be!" and sure enough, I called her name, and she scurried right under me!! So we went along the walls, trying to figure out how she possibly could have gotten into the walls... finally we looked in the washer/dryer closet. We move the dryer, and there was a giant hole that would have been perfect for a suggie to explore. I panicked!

I started calling her name into the hole, and I could hear her, but it sounded like she couldn't find the way back to the hole. The neighbors came over, and the four of us tried everything to get her out of there.. we undid outlets in the wall to see if we could get to her, I put a big thing of chirping crickets outside the big hole to coax her out... after 2 hours, we had no luck. She was right here! and we couldn't get to her- she was stuck in the floor, and we didn't know how to save her. I was so frustrated and really upset, and I'm sure Aki was too.

Pretty soon, we started to think of the worst. Nick lives in a big apartment complex, and who knows where she could go if all the walls are connected? What if she was found by a cat? I thought that she could have followed the dryer vent outside and gotten lost, or run over, or eaten! I started crying really hard, and I kept calling her name into the hole in the wall, but I couldn't hear her anymore. I was tapping on the wood so that she could maybe feel the vibrations of the wood to help her, or keep her from giving up.

Suddenly, Nick heard her again, only in the floor of the bathroom! He was calling her name, and he could hear her running along the floor boards. So he and our friend Sean tore up a corner of the linoleum next to the tub (she was right underneath them!) The wood was old and soggy from a leaky tub, and they just started pulling wood up, bit by bit. They used a knife to make a hole big enough for a Leatherman saw, then they used some pliers to pull up more wood, and finally, Nick made a glider-sized hole to get to her! He called her and put his ear to the hole, but he didn't hear anything. So he made it bigger, put his hand in there, and pulled the insulation to the side. He called Aki's name again, and put his ear to the hole... nothing. He sat up, looked down the hole, and there was AKI!!!! She was looking right up at him, waiting for him to move his ear! He gave her a sunflower seed to try to coax her out, but she grabbed it and happily just sat down there, eating her treat. Finally she crawled out, covered from head to toe in dust. She looked like she had just been through an earthquake! Her eyes were almost squinted shut, but she was warm and didn't seem to be injured. We figured that she must have been in the floor for about 4 hours!!! (it was around 1:30 am when she came out)

We cleaned her up, and gave her lots and lots of water and juice. She was still pretty dirty, but most of all, she was shaken up- she was tired and sneezing, but very happy to see us. Once we cleaned and dryed her and fed her by hand, we put her back in with Lego, and he cleaned her up even more. As I watched them, I just sat there thinking how incredibly lucky we all were.

The next morning we took her to the vet, and she was fine! I was worried about the fiberglass- her little lungs, and also about her eyes, but the Doc said she was just fine and that she should take it easy for a few days!!

Saturday Nick and I spent the entire afternoon mending the hole we dug in our floor and sealing off every possible way that a sugar glider could sneak into somewhere they shouldn't be. The main point is is that we thought she coudn't get in there... the doors to the closet were closed, but she had somehow pried them open or squeezed underneath in order to get in there-- Sugar gliders can get into anything that they truly have a desire to explore!!!!!!

Please learn from our mistake, and make sure that you have every conceivable hole, crack, loose wood, tile or brick sealed!! It took us one day to fully seal off our apartment to the best of our ability... it doesn't take that much effort! I can't imagine what would have happened if we would have just assumed she was in the couch and would find her way back. Thanks for reading, and please take a few minutes to make sure your house is glider-safe... even the parts that you don't think they will go. [/]

omg - I'm so glad that everyone is reunited and happy/healthy! Thank goodness you and Nick persevered, and have since sealed all the little escape passages that gliders can find. It is always, always a good reminder for folks to recheck their homes, over and over again.

BTW, Aki is back to her old crazy bad self again... She sure was a little shook up when she came out!

I had a problem with my little BEW Sesamie escaping the room that had been glider safe for over six years. Seems....Sesamie who I had owned since a tiny baby...who was about a year oop. had suddenly discovered she could squeeze under the door and get out of the safe room. The fist time she got out...I about died as I heard her crabin..but did not see her. Opened the door and I saw her run across the living room floor(to make it worse she is a floor glider) with Abby.... my hubbys little mini dashound in hot persuit. We managed to cut Abby off while Sesamie ran under a big living room chair. I about had a heart attck right then and there! My little glider was almost a snack for hubby's little Abby.

No matter how I would block up the door...once Sesamie discovered she could get out under the door there was no stopping her. So, finally had hubby go to the hardware store and purchase a metal stip and attach to the bottom of the door. Thus ended the escape route.

SO, you are so right...once a glider figures out how to get out....they is no stopping them unless you locate the problem and correct it ASAP.

There has been several gliders on the board who have disappeard in a home...only to never be found again. You are so very lucky to have found your little glider.

Oh Niki...I almost had a heart attack reading your post. That had to be the worst feeling in the world. I am so happy that you found her and that she is in good health. The lord really does listen to our prayers! Give her and Lego lots and lots of suggie hugs and kisses!

wow, you are a GREAT momma to work so hard for your little one. i give you a standing applaude.

i had a scary experiance once, kinda like that. Zoey got lost a few days before her joey came out. my family and i searched HOURS for her and couldnt find her. the last place i saw her was in the certains, and i searched there MILLIONS of times. we were re-doing our bathroom and had a huge hole in our floor at the time, and i was certain that she went down there. my dad was yelling at me the whole time and accusing me of being a horrible mother/grandmother. he told me to get in bed and not to look anymore that night, but i couldn't. but i got into bed with tears in my eyes and cryed for about an hour. then i got this crazy idea that i should check the certains one more time. i did and there she was, sleeping. it was a miricle.

I'm so glad Aki is okay!!!
I just have to ask. Where did you get the name Aki? There is a character in the series Ayashi No Ceres, an anime series that I really like, named Aki and I was wondering if there was any connection (probably isn't but I like the name).

OM Gosh!! So glad to hear your HAPPY ending!! I had an "escapee" once, too! Susie was only about 12 weeks OOP, only about 3-4 weeks with us, and she is such a crabby-appleton!! Took forever to get bonded...anyway...she wasn't bonded yet at this time, and the door got stuck open. I couldn't find her anywhere!! I threw the cats outside, and searched for a couple hours. I was desperate, and looked at my female Boston Terrier, and said, "Where's the baby???" "Where'd the baby go???" She got up, took me right in my son's room, got on the bed, and looked up. Well, right there on the top of the curtain rod was Susie!! OMG!! I had looked all over in that room!! Well, Susie will be one on May 1st, and my boston is the smartest dog in the whole world!!! So glad you had a happy ending, too!! Makes us more careful, huh???

[:"purple"] Gosh, there's just sooo many things that can happen to suggies if you aren't careful! Ever since we got Aki home, she had NEVER been interested in places like the kitchen, or the laundry closet, so we never really worried about it. It only takes one little venture though....

It's good to share stories about escapes so that people have an idea about where to look if it ever happens!

Polgara, My bf and I found lots and lots of names online about what we wanted to name Aki- we knew we wanted something Japanese and something without an "ssss" sound in it (we noticed that she cringed every time she heard that noise), and we had names like Sakura and Yuki and Saki and Tai, but after we polled our friends, everyone seemed to like Aki. It took about two weeks. Same process with Lego, exept I didn't care what anyone wanted to call him, since I already knew he was a lego.

Thanks for sharing everyone! [/]
