I am sooo confussed if gliders do not tend to wander from their owners what am I doing wrong? Ok here goes.....Yesterday my daughter and I were shopping at Mervyns we have a glider that is approximatly 14 weeks oop we have had her for about a month and I thought that she was pretty bonded to us we take her EVERYWHERE, except work so all evenings and weekend she is with us, she has a pouch that we carry along, but before we got to Mervyns she climed out of her pouch and went into my gym shoes that were in the car well I tried to get her out and she just kept crabbing at me,so I undid the laces and she finally came out, I think she was mad. Anyway that's only the begining in my frustration of trying to get her out of the shoe I left her pouch in the car and she was just scurring around on me. Well we did our shopping and paid for our purcahse. while the clerk was taking our money a couple behind us were talking to us about her next thing I knew she jumped off of me and found herself a hole under the countertop where the cash register was, after about an hour of offering her pouch, grapes, and yougrt the lady had asked some employees to come over and see if they could lift the desk to get her out My daughter in the mean time is just in hysterics it was so heart wrenching to go through all of this there were so many wires and other holes under the counter. Anyway they finally got a couple of dollys and luckily I could see her through the hole (just sitting there smiling in the dark eating her grape.)Well as they lifted this heavy desk trying not to drop it on her or my arm she bolted for another hole.......(THIS IS THE WORST PART)I grabbed her by the tail it was just a natrual reaction and I didn't dare let go I didn't want to lose her forever and boy I was scared she was scared I was giving her leeway, but I just didn't want to let go she was crabbing so loud, but at a time it was like her voice was hoarse and she could hardly crab it was soooooo awful, she kept turning around to bite me so I put the grape on my hand she finally relaxed a little and we got her out. I feel so bad Im soooo worried about her, she wasn't as active lastnight until a little later in the evening, and she wouldn't eat at her normal time, but eventually she did. What should I do now......and why, why would she jump off of me like that is that a normal thing? I hope I don't make anyone mad at me my best interest was just in getting my baby back and all I could do was hold on to her tail. , I m sure it's not broken, but does the tail affect anything else, Im sure it may be bruised I just didn't know what to do.

Id say yes it is a natural thing for her to want to "explore", my glider is totally bonded to me but Id not be surprised if she jumped off me. Me, personally, would never never go in public with my glider just walking around on me, shes either in my shirt sleeping or if she even thinks about getting up shes back in her pouch.
Things are just too risky and I also dont want people trying to touch her or scare her. As for her tail, if in doubt, Id say go to the vet. Im so glad you got her back, it could have been so much worse. Love on your baby and she will understand you didnt mean to hurt her.

I have to agree. I would rather have held that tail myself before I would lose one forever. Time will heal your bond and a vet can heal her tail.

This is why a glider when taken out should always be restrained. Purchase a window pouch if need be. There are several pouch makers here on Glider Central who make them.

As for the bonding...it may set you back some so do not be surprised. I am sure her tail if fairly sore. As to wither or not it is broke...does it hang limp or is she able to move it as normal? If limp...suggest a trip to the vet....ASAP.

Gliders are ever curious little critters and love to explore and roam when they can, especially young ones The important thing is she is home and safe where she belongs. Don't beat yourself up over it, just be sure to keep a pouch with a tight drawstring on it, or something to keep it shut so she doesn't pull an escape like this again...lol. While it's never good to grab their tails, in your case you were trying to catch her and I for one do understand that reflex reaction to "grab her before she's gone again!". If she is still acting "off" tonight, or like her rear is bruised, I would think maybe a vet check would be in order just to make sure everything is ok I am glad she is home again and safe, and your experiences may just help someone else out with it Give her lots of mealies and love and she should forgive and forget in no time

She can curl and uncurl her tail just fine, it is not limp....I just had my sister in law run to my house and check on her, the cage has a lock so she couldn't open it, but she said she looked up out of her coconut then went right back to sleep.

Wow - what a shopping excursion that was! The poor wee one -she just didn't realize she was giving everyone a heart attack with her antics! She is probably just fine, her ego is a tad bruised I hope she bounces back quickly - she still loves you!

Awwww, give her lot's of love, some extra mealies and I would even venture to suggest a vet check just to double check and make sure her tail is ok. When I take my guys out, I always have a secure pouch, and for times when that isn't enough I take one of those small cages that they can actually run around in, but not get out of!
I have pouches with windows and zippers as well as drawstring with a cord lock on my site if you want to take a look! Topsy Turvy Gliders

OMGoodness...Whew! I am so glad to hear that your baby is okay. I was so scared while reading your post...I was hoping for a happy ending...thank goodness you got her back. Do not feel horrible about grabbing her tail...you had to in order for her safety...just learn from your mistake and make sure she is always secure in her pouch from now on.

So happy she is back safely in your loving care
So many electrical parts under there, she is a lucky little lady!

I very rarely take my 's with me into the outside world, I don't want them exposed them to dangers, strangers & possible air-born germs & virus's among other things.

Another issue people may want to consider is - if your should happen to bite anyone -
it quite possibly could be euthanatized for histopathological processing & evaluation (rabies)
This information was related to me several years ago by animal control except, they stated it would be euthanatized!
