Okay, yesterday I took Tomoki in to be neutered. He seems to have pulled through his little traumatic event just fine. I noticed, however, that he is still nursing off of Keiko. Or at least, he seems to be. They're all in my bra now, and he's got his little nose buried in her pouch, and making his little suckling noises. She's just laying there, content and sleeping. Is Keiko still producing milk? Is Tomoki indeed still nursing? He's definitely completely on solids now. Is this just residual "for old times' sake" behavior? Is it just comforting for him, especially after having been to the vet yesterday? It wasn't just yesterday and today that he's been "nursing" still, but off and on throughout the day (while everyone is in my bra) for the past several weeks still. Although yesterday evening when I brought him home he seemed to revert and really nuzzled in there for a long time. Any thoughts?

I'm going to guess that it's more a security thing than actually nursing... I've never really heard of gliders doing it, but my aunt had a cat that would let her kittens nurse when they were a couple years old... Whenever they got upset, the kittens would run to their mom and try to nurse. She wasn't producing any milk, they just did because it made them feel better. I don't know if this is the case in your situation, but that's my best guess.

That is odd, I have never seen it either, but then I haven't had to many babies...I know cats and dogs will do it for comfort. I would think it is a security thing, esp. since he just had an alarming experience at the vets, because at 11 wks, he should be completely weaned by now. I am sure someone will be along with more knowledge of this to help

Thanks, everyone, for your responses! He definitely is suckling, because when he detaches, her pouch area is exposed a bit, and there is evidence he'd been down there. She really doesn't seem to mind, so maybe it's just a gentle comfort suckling on his part.
He's also definitely eating regular foods, just like Mom and Dad, and doing everything else they do.
It just seemed odd to me, since he came OOP 1/3/04, and I know he's definitely weaned. So, is Keiko still producing milk (for him), or is he not really down there for food, so it doesn't really matter? Think I ought to get him a little glider pacifier to wean him away from Mom?
I guess I just have a true little momma's boy on my hands. He is, by all counts, a big boy now (well, especially since I just got him neutered). I haven't heard his little baby whimpering in a long while, except just recently, also, he made a soft, "Ehhif, ehhif" sound like he had been abandoned. It didn't last long, but was cute to hear.
I guess I do miss the little joey experience, having been through it once. Maybe someday, in a different house, under different circumstances...

Thanks, Judie! I am taking lots of pictures. So much so, I realized I had to start taking photos of Mom and Dad, too. Yeah, maybe Keiko realizes this is her first and last joey; I got Hiroshi neutered shortly after Tomoki came OOP. They made (still make) such great parents! I hate having regrets, but if it's ever meant to be in the future, with another pair of gliders, then it'll happen. For now, I truly am enjoying every minute with my entire glider family! I know right now, it would be so hard for me to become a licensed breeder and actually let go of any of my joeys. I don't know how you guys do it! That is one life lesson I'm working on now, though, "letting go," so maybe once I master that one, I'll be ready! I won't be concerned, then, that Tomoki is still "nursing" off of Keiko. Since she doesn't mind, neither should I! Hey, maybe he's working on the same life lesson!
