I saw something on the moon phases on here a while ago about moon phases but nobody said why we care about them
Thanks

It is a theory that gliders act differently when there is a full moon coming. (I work in a nursing home and have found that it does have an affect on those with dementia) For my gliders I really don't watch it, but some people do. If you've ever wondered why they were acting funny you can check and find out. I hope that helps.

If you notice, they (gliders) will tend to eat less 2-3 days prior and after the full moon. The phases are up so that we can keep track of when they are coming and know to expect it...lol. It's odd, but it does actually have an affect on them.

it isn't just the full moon, mine are less eaters a couple days before/after a new moon, also keep in ind, that we are currently experincing the planetary line up. where all the planets are in line with the moon, which also may affect the pressures and energy.

I'm not sure I buy the full moon theory. My guess is that if you examined any 3-4 day period in a month over many, many months, you'd see the same peculiarities in behavior in that 3-4 day period that you do during a full moon.

There have been a number of studies done on full moon effects on behavior in people, and not much correlation has been established. Having worked in many psych units in my life, I used to believe the full moon theories along with my co-workers, until I began compiling statistics for the a hospital CQI committee. What I found out is that OVER TIME, the incidents of wild behavior, increased admissions, etc. that we attributed to the full moon were not different than any other time of the month (we also believed that admissions and wild behavior were different on weekends and holidays, and that wasn't true, either). I was surprised to see this.

Of course, it's always possible that something's true for gliders that isn't true for people. I THOUGHT my gliders' behavior/eating was different during full moons, but I don't see that behavior anymore.

I'm not doubting anyone's personal experiences here. I'm just saying that the science doesn't support the theory (apart from slight global warming and perhaps more growth from plants as a result), and there doesn't appear to be good science behind the full-moon theory.

Here are a few links to get you started in your reading, if you're interested in more. In fairness, you'll probably find the same amount of full-moon theory websites with conflicting opinions. It's important to look at the research and how it was gathered in forming your opinion:

Full moon theory
Full moon theory

Again, I'm not saying that people's opinions aren't valid, or that their experiences with full moons aren't what they have observed But if you look at the full moon days, you need to also look at the non-full moon days to see if the behavior is truly significant mainly on full-moon days.

I've noticed that mine tend to bark fanatically around the time of a full moon. Usually they don't bark much, but around a full moon they get excited.

Maybe something key to consider is that gliders are nocturnal. There is probably a study out there somewhere on the effects of the moon cycle and some nocturnal animal. (If I had to guess it'd be something like a noctuid moth.) But it's a place to start with a comparative study.

I had this long drawn out reply to lucy and tom almost finished then something happened I'm not writting all that again!!
the short of it...
Lucy -I'll read it and think about the bias

Tom-how do you know when there is a diffrence in preasure? the news? Might there be a diffrence on the plane?

Finally..There was something on t.v. the other night it said(about humans) there is no know link betwen a full moon and crazy behavior.
I'm so upset my (darn near)report got messed up no dobut it was all my fault :

Oh I hate when that happens! When I write long posts I copy them just in case I lose it and have to paste. It's sooo frustrating to lose a long post you've spent time on.

Usually they report the barometric pressure in the weather segment of the news. Otherwise you can check it out on local news sites or national weather sites.

Have there been any other studies on humans and other behaviors besides craziness or wild behaviors? I've heard about pregnant women going into labor around the full moon simultaneously. I haven't really researched this, but it's interesting to consider. Correlation doesn't necessarily suggest causation.

I would imagine though that being nocturnal has a lot to do with it. Since humans are not nocturnal and (from an evolutionary standpoint) no longer live in the "natural environment" it would stand to reason that moon cycles don't correlate with human behavior.

With nocturnal animals that are considered prey species (like gliders) it would make sense that foraging or eating behaviors decrease during the week of the full moon because night-time activity during that period may increase the risk of predation. It's easier for an owl to spot a critter to eat when the moon is full and bright, so it's in the best interest of that critter to keep a low profile so to speak.
But this is all speculative and again I'm sure there are some animal behavioral studies out there that may not be specifically on gliders but on other nocturnal prey species. If I have time I'll try to hunt some info down if anyone really cares.

I do know its a scientific fact that the moon phases affect the ocean (the tide)... I looked it up a long time ago and read about it... supposedly it affects many living things as well as some things that arnt living (I once watched a science show where the moons phases were affecting car engines! ). It has something to do with 'water' (salt water).... since alot of living things are made up of, or contain amounts of water/salt water... I think the moons phases having an affect are quite possible. (just my opinion)

The moon does affect the tides... the moon's gravitational effect on the earth is that it actually alters the spherical shape of the earth into kind of a strange oval sort of shape, which in turn affects the way the water sits on the earth. The moon doesn't actually 'pull in' the tide in or out, but it does affect the earth's shape. At least that's what my geophysics prof told me a while back. Some things still say the moon pulls on the water itself.... so I don't know if that's widespread mis-info or if it's just another theory. Kinda crazy nonetheless.

This is very interesting. I have worked in nursing homes and could tell the difference in residents when there was a full moon I don't know a lot about science, but I do know what I've seen in the people myself, as far as the gliders go, I really haven't paid that much attention to it, but I will from now on

I don't know what it is but mine act different too in a moon phase, they bark more, seem to want more attention too and eat less! So, I have accounted this to the moon phases. They will eat less, but eat lots more when the moon phase is over, so try I to get them the extra suppliments they need before and after the moon phases. Nights they tend to go with the moon phase they don't seem to eat as much, then the nights after, they seem to make up for it. So funny! But having a pregnant one I need to make sure she is getting all she needs, and watch real careful for all the moon phases. I wake her several different times of the day and give her something nutritious.

it is not uncommon for animals in the wild to behave or act differently during the moon phases,

there are charts out there for many animals.

there are deer charts that specifically go into the moon phases and the various changes in behaviors including eating.

as was said regarding tides,

and yes this is shear speculation as I do read various things regarding the planetary effects on humans, as well as animals. the pros the cons, what I have done is taken what I feel is the most common elements and accepted those as reasons, based on my own personal logs of my gliders behaviors. I highly suggest to others to also do this. not only with the phases, but during other periods as well.

As Tom stated the barametric pressures, (and other astmospheric changes) also affect their eating behaviors.

those that have see the high turbulence in the atmosphere has also seen the eating habits of their gliders change. Thunderstorms, tornados, strong winds, monsoons, etc..

Those that have had problem gliders, can tell you they can sense the tension if you are afraid of your glider, but that gets into an area, that some don't believe in. but it is a fact that dogs also can sense pressures, cattle and horses change behaviors when a storm is brewing, long before we can visually see it.

Hey there,
My gliders go CRAZY when its a full moon. They will bark ALL NIGHT LONG and not stop! It used to keep me up at night!
I started playing some Steely Dan for them, and that seemed to calm then down a little bit. But, otherwise, they are nutso during the full moon!
