When I bought my first glider last Dec., the breeder gave me a bag of this and told me to feed it with some fruit and protein. Within a week I found the Suncoast site and switched my baby over to it. The Happy Glider food is really hard and dry. Now that I have learned a lot (thanks to this forum and all of you lovely folks) about gliders and their needs, I wonder why this food even exists and who uses it? Is anyone here familiar with it? It's as hard as cat or dog food and the nutitional analysis doesn't look right for glider needs but I'm certainly no expert!
What do you with diet experience think of it? Am I wrong?

Here is the place that the breeder told me to buy it from so she could get a discount for sending me there. I never bought any and threw out what she gave to me.

As with any pet, Gliders are a "Market" and if it can be thought of and sold, it will be. Unfortunatly, there are enough ppl who do not know what a gliders nutritional needs are that buy that stuff thinking it is "good" or "easy to feed", thus keeping them in business. Kind of like buying Ole Roy dogfood compared to say, Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul brand. Ole Roy is cheap, and full of filler and really not nutritionally sound, whereas CSFDLS is more expensive and a great diet for your dogs. Just because it's marketed for a specific animal doesn't mean it's good for it, but what will sell, will sell and the almighty dollar will be made one way or the other. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shakehead.gif" alt="" />

(** noted that dog food brands are a personal opinion and are not intended to start a war on what you feed your dogs. They in no way reflect GC's opinions on dogfood as a Board.)

I guess it's not THAT funny, huh? You almost always have to use disclaimers these days!

Actually, it's not THAT bad of a diet, the drawback is it being hard pelleted <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />. Bourbon has talked to and worked a little with the manufacturer of this diet, and he has made improvements. There are better diets available tho <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumb.gif" alt="" />.

Actually, Pockets brought Pet Pro "Happy Glider" to the GC board a few years ago & Bourbon had a fit! lol <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

To my knowledge it is exactly the same product & has not changed

I do find the humor in this. I really do. BUT it makes me sad that folks have to feel they have to be so careful about diets. Somehow we have to turn this around so we can all talk about diets without fear of someone or people JUMPING in and ending the info that can be passed.

We all feed different diets and that is fine. But don't let this board keep you from talking about what and why you feed. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

I know what you mean, Ellen.

Sugar gliders, being exoctic animals, are harder to know what to feed because they are still so "new" to the pet world compared to dogs and cats and such. Even vets are new to this so going to just any old vet is scary too. I do agree though that discussion of why you like or dislike a diet should be posted without people taking it personally. It's ok to have an opinion on a diet. That is why I asked about the Happy Glider food. I thought it was too hard for my little guy but maybe someone else knew something I didn't. I never thought of soaking it in apple juice or anything. I don't know if that would make a difference or not. I was also never told to feed veggies with it. She did say insects were fine but not necessary. I didn't like that.

I just bumped into the Suncoast diet by accident and felt good about using it.

Yes, it is definitely a personal thing between us and our gliders! Sort of like breast or bottle feeding...whatever is best for you and your babies!

LOL pockets.. yes I did have a fit, and there are many other diets out there I also had a fit with and still do. it wasn't so much when you brought it in , as it was the sidestepping the Rich (Jim's Nephew) was doing with the ingredients and nutritional content when he was discussing it.

I have spoken with Jim, on many occassions regarding the pet pro, he has changed it, and sends me the changes when he does. The food is very hard, and some gliders do have problems with that, Baybe is one of them, I have spoken with Jim extensivly on this and he has no problem with soaking it in apple juice, in fact others must of also voiced their concerns as well, when I told him that Baybe gets Lumpy jaw every time I feed it, even after I soak it in apple juice, he suggested I leave it in the refrigerator over night in a ziplock baggie soaking.

nutritionally the diet he has set up is not a complete plan, and he states that on the package, it is only a staple. He states on the package to feed with fruits, veggies and proteins.

he also changed his packaging to reflect the proper storage of it. after that fiasco with Briskys.

Briskys states when there are problems, that it is a storage problem, his says to store in a cool dry place, But when something happens he states that it should be stored in a refrigerator or freezer. the pet pro states to store in refrigerator or freezer on the package.

also the way he makes his food is very different than other manufactures, he uses an extrusion process, that heats the food by friction, there fore preserving the nutritional values of the ingredients.

keeping in mind that the "balance of the diet is in the end dependant upon the owner , just as many other diets out there does, because the owner must supply other things to it. fruits, veggies, and proteins.

anyone with any questions should feel free to contact Jim himself regarding his diet, as he has nothing to hide and will feel free to talk to anyone about their concerns.

This in itself sets him above many of the commercial manufactures out there. there are no "trade secrets".

also when the aflatoxin issues can up a few years back all the manufactures that used corn as their base, was contacted, he is the only one that wanted to know how to check for it, as well as what he could do to reduce the risks.

I myself have used the pet-pro as a feed when traveling, as well as on the nights I did not have bml made up. outside of Baybe , I haven't had any problems with it. but Baybe gets lumpy jaw everytime I use it.

as far as change is concerned, change must be flexable according to research, and when it warrants it then it is a good thing, we are still learning everyday regarding the dietary needs of our gliders here in the states in captivity.

I don't get a discount for sending people to him.
but the concerns I have regarding his food, he knows I will voice and I allow others to make their own decision, again he has no problem with discussing his food with anyone. feel free to contact him directly.

Thank you, Bourbon. That clears up a lot! The bag I got from the breeder was a ziploc bag with no directions, info, etc. It was, of course, to tide me over until I ordered some on my own. The website didn't give me enough to go on as I am not a nutritionalist and depend on people like you to do all that for me! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/roflmao.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" />

Thanks again for your input!

I highly suggest ordering it directly from Jim, as to guarantee freshness. he doesn't keep a stockpile of his feeds, and he doesn't have a huge manufacturing process going on. the problems I have with some of his distrubuters, is that we never know what the batch numbers are, or how long they have sat in their possession.

The breeder did tell me to order directly from him (I'm assuming that is his website I posted up there).

I'm happy with the diet my gliders are on now. I could not find any info on Happy Glider when I searched this forum so I wanted to bring the subject up in case anyone else had questions about it that wasn't around during your last discussion on it. This place has helped me so much on so many different topics. It really is a great place for lots of opinions, too! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yelclap.gif" alt="" />

I was introduced to Happy Glider thru a breeder and I do like it and feed it to all of my gliders. I keep it in the cage all the time for them as a snack or extras. They get their fresh food every night. I feel better knowing that they have something to snack on if they get up during the day. All of my gliders really like the Happy Glider. You might can check, there was a thread about it at the beginning of March (I think) I can remember posting to it. Someone did a check and it was posted that Happy Glider does not claim to be a whole diet.

Yes Cindy that is Jim Nutter's site <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumb.gif" alt="" /> as Bourbon has stated he is a very friendly man & welcomes questions - within reason (Bourbon)lol!

I met Jim a few years ago thru friends who raise macropods, his
"Happy Hopper" feeds are very popular & have been for many years.
Kangaroo's & wallaby's are much more prone to lumpy jaw than our <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/littleglider.gif" alt="" />'s & I have never heard of any problems with Jim's foods being responsable for causing this in their macropods from their care-takers.

Bourbon do you have veterinarian proof of Lump-jaw affecting captive <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/littleglider.gif" alt="" />'s? I have been working a bit with an Australian published author & we both would be interested in that information
