I just recently cleaned my gliders' cage. I took them out and put them each in one of those clear roll-y things that are usually for hamsters. They have been in them before so they are used to them. They love to roll around the house in them, and it makes me feel better when I have a quick thing to do such as put a load of laundry in. They just roll around and there is a small possibility of them getting hurt because they are in those (I think they are called roll-about balls). Well they were out for about 30 minutes while I cleaned their cage and washed their toys. After I put them back in they seemed fine for a few days. About 3 days later I saw fur on the outside of their pouch. I picked it all off and the next day there was no more. I wanted to be sure that they were alright so I took them to the vet. The only vet that was open that day was not really experienced in sugar gliders...meaning he has never seen one in real life. I still wanted his two cents and he just said it was probably stress (this happened right after my cats scared them) so I thought he was most likely right. Has this ever happened to any of ya'll's gliders? If so were they alright after that?

I'm likely just dense this morning, but I'm not sure if you're asking about them being in the balls or the cats? Did the cats scare them in the cage...or when they were out in the balls?

If in the cage...I would keep your cats away from the gliders if the cats would climb on or otherwise harass your gliders...like other small prey animals, gliders can be scared to death, and I have a rescue pair where the male came to me with almost no hair on his head and very underweight from cat and dog caused stress (just smelling them now will trigger anxiety for the poor guy-he doesn't have to see them). The first six months we had them, there we frequently clumps of hair both inside and outside his pouch from his overgrooming himself.

You are sure one of the cats didn't get partial hold and pull it loose? (only asking because it's happened to others).

As long as everything else is okay...appetite, no symptoms of severe stress like bald/short patches of hair, diarrhea, vomiting, activity levels normal, etc., and you don't see any more hair, I'd say they're probably okay.

I'd also confine any larger animals while they're out in the balls...if the cats chase or bat at them, that can stress them as well, even though they're unlikely to be physically hurt. Hope this helps.

I had posted about my cats pawing at the gliders while they were in the cage and causing them to stress out. I was just wondering if there was some type of illness that causes fur loss. I now keep the cats outside all day. They are eating and drinking normally and they are as active as they were. I'm pretty sure they are okay but I am no vet. Thanks for responding.

Illness can cause fur loss from the stress on the body of being sick...such as having an infection, and normally will result in short/bald patches of hair sooner or later. It's still a stress-related type of thing, and there's different kinds of stress (ie, stress from being sick, stress from another animal, stress from being nervous or scared, etc). I wasn't quite sure which you were asking, tho, so was trying to cover everything I could see in your post.

Stress from any source can cause hair loss from over grooming.

Any time a glider gets ill, it can stress them. This stress can lead to over grooming behavior and hair loss.

But also, gliders can get skin mites that can cause hair loss.

Improper diet can also cause hair loss.
