Ok
Cages needed to be off the floor or on stands or on a plastic mat.
Water bottles clean - that is a big thing with them.

Sheila-
So it would be okay to have a cages on a plastic mat on the floor, but not necessarily on stands if they were on a mat?

Mine seemed particularly interested in making sure there wasn't a spec of rust or chipped paint or anything on the cages (of course, there wasn't, so I was okay there), and she wanted to see that my food was fresh, and that my extra bedding/pouches/blankies were stored in a clean area away from anything that could contaminate them, and also that they were safe from any possible predators..tons more too. I guess I got a pretty thorough inspector. I didn't mind. I passed with flying colors. Yay! Good Luck To You.

Hmm, maybe I should get a small storage bin... I keep all my pouches on the top of this chest thing in the glider room, so I think i am going to get a container for everything...

And thanks for the luck, everything could be perfect and I'd still be nervous!

I have my glider things in storage bins. Every dwayer is labeled and shut. Also my food is labeled and dated and in seperate bins in the fridge and freezer. My inspector was great, she loved my cages. I felt so much more comfortable once she got here, the waiting was torture, lol.

I absolutely LOVE this inspectors list idea! It is brilliant! It sure helps out the individuals who are currently trying to successfully obtain their license.

Does anyone else have anything to add?

If it is not too much trouble, I would sincerely appreciate a detailed itemized list from various Sugar Glider guardian's personal experiences with their USDA inspection. Have permission to PM.

<---- just passed my inspection on the first visit today!

The inspector was only here for about an hour. I agree that maybe the animals should have been inspected further, but he did inspect the cages, food storage containers, and my refrigerator in the glider room.

I would advise anyone that is wanting to get thier USDA license to have thier paperwork in order, things like a list of animals on hand, where they came from. And make sure the cages are clean. He also checked to see that all dry foods were stored in sealed containers and free from contamination. It was really quite simple, and the anxiety of his arrival was worse than the inspection. :-)

I woud also like to add that any negative comments made about me or my business on this board are unfounded and untrue. If you would truly like to get to know me and my business, please feel free to contact me. I am NOT the horrible person that some people are making me out to be. The comments made are completely unfounded as this person has NEVER been to my home or know anything about my business practices. I hope you all have the maturity to make those types of decisions for yourselves and not take somebody else's word for it.

Sincerely,
Tanya

All surfaces ....floor and walls need to be covered with a sealant so urine and droppings can be cleaned up easily without being asorbed into the surfaces. Thus I use plastic floor runners on my shelving. No cages on the floors. Floors are covered with vinyl covering. Area rug..that can be shampooed easily. If floor is concrete...it must have a sealant applied over.

Bins for clean litter and for dry foods with lids that seal tightly so rodents cannot get into them.

My inspector goes through my frig. Checks the fruits and veggies and looks for any outdated meds for the gliders.

toys for enrichment are a key eleminate with my inspector as well.

All clean food dishes are in my kitchen in their own area.

I have shelving out in the garage next to my glider room where I keep clean blankies and pouches as well as clean holding cages and containers.

Antique wash basin in my cage room...paper plates and paper towels in it. Mealworm farm usually sits on the top of it. Towel for restraining a glider if need be.

No trash. If you have a trash can in your glider room...it must have a tight fitting lid over it to prevent bugs.

Room must have proper lighting. Also must have a window or a good exhaust fan installed for proper ventilation.

Trays reasonably clean as well as fresh clean water. Food dishes inside the cages along with the trays...must not be growing anything inside of them.

Animals must be in good health. Some inspectors do spot checks on the animals ...while some will check each and every one of them.

Then of course there is the paperwork. Keep good records.

The first visit...goes well becuase one knows the USDA is coming and has made an appointment. It is the pop-up inspections that are really fun. You have not lived till you have gone through one in your PJ's at 9 am in the morning.

After me posting last night she showed up this morning at around 1030 everything was fine of course but she realy still uses this check list and make sure there is not rust on your cages. I just bought all new cages a few months ago so that worked.

question about the cage being off the floor. Does having a pull out tray count as off the floor? or do you have to have a mat under that? and if so how thick does it have to be?

Even if it has a pull out tray it stills needs to be off the floor or put a rubber mat under it. Not thick just rubber mats.
