Hi, Its been a long time since I've posted. History: I moved to Texas and do not have a glider vet here. I have been feeding the Bourban modified leadbetters diet for ever (with calcium and herbtivite). With fruit and vegs and occational treats. Have not fed meal worms or crickets for long time (years). They are fed regularly and well cared for. My 5 year old neutered male Pockets is extremely ill. I was not the one that fed New Years Night, but they were fed the normal. Were not played with as we were rushing. So I know that they were okay the night before. Its hard to tell how much he was eating as his lady is a big eater also. Problem: When I fed on the first, his head was so wobbly that he could not keep it still to eat. He was strong, but was having trouble holding on. We hand fed him some applesauce as that was all he would eat. He is dehydrated, so we gave him water also. He had an appetite. His stomach was a huge hard ball. His mate's was hard also, but smaller and she is fine so far. Next day, took him to doc - who deals with exotics, but not gliders. He does not know anyone that deals with gliders in San Antonio area. He gave us mineral oil, and calcium gluconate. Thought he had a blockage since he had not pooped and maybe a calc deficiency. Did not want to attempt to give him an iv. and said that an xray would not make a difference because he would not change the treatment. Granted, this vet fit us in between surgeries and is not a glider vet and was doing his best. We have had to hand feed him. He puts up no fight at all, except a few attempts to keep his jaw shut. He as pooped a little, but is not eating alot-its very soft. His stomach is soft now, but my daughter thinks it looks "gasy" He is having a hard time keeping his head up, but his spastic movements are only occasional. His skin is hanging on him and he is still dehydrated. But he did come out of the pouch last night and this a.m. and lick a tiny bit of applesauce. I am calling trying to find a vet but so far have not had any luck. Please help - if anyone can call me on my cell it will not be long distance. And if anyone can give me Bourban's cell number I would appreciate it - he is one of her baby's babies. Any help or advice would be great. We are desperate. Excuse my spelling - I am a little shaky. Debi (Curtsinger) from Virginia originally. 830 741 2506 (Home) 210 216 7551 (Cell) Glider's names "Pockets" and Phoenix

I have tried to call Bourbon for you but got her voice mail. I left a message to come to this post, also your name and phone numbers. I want to add here, even though the vet gave you mineral oil, do not give this to your glider. If he asperates it, it can kill him...USE VEGITABLE oil instead. It will do the same thing but not pose the same risks.

Praying for this baby. It's a good sign that he has pooped and that his tummy is softer. sounds like either HLP (because of wobbly head) or maybe liver (hardness could have been an enlarged liver?). I'm just guessing here. I'll be interested to see what the vet says. BTW, I've heard there is a consultation line to the Healesville Sanctuary in Australia that U.S. vets can call to consult with thier vets. Sorry I don't know the number, but I think it was Jett who told me about it. You could PM her.

she just got out of the vet and is on her way home, I will stand back and wait for her to update you on pockets. I will tell you my prayers are with both of them and this will be an uphill fight for them both. Deb, my love to you, and glad to see you are okay, would love to have you stay now that you found your way back to us.

Just got back from the vet, thanks for the recommendation, he was wonderful. It was great seeing someone that really knew Gliders. He thought it was an underlying infection which was affecting his CNS. He gave him fluid shot directly into his stomach so it would absorb into his system quickly, also gave baytril and calcium injections. He sent home antibiodics and fluids. We are to keep him warm, keep hand feeding, giving him the fluids at least 3X a day and the baytril. I am supposed to keep in touch with the vet by phone to see what we do next. We could not get a fecal and he was afraid to stress him any further by taking blood. He did not think his system could take being sedated. All is well right now - he is so weak. I will keep you all informed of his progress. I cannot say how much I appreciate all the support and phone calls. I was in a real panic. My daughter is a vet tech so she will give him the fluids for me and I can handle the rest. Thank you again, Debi & Pockets (Poco)

Update: We were getting him out for his fluids when we saw him drinking and eating by himself- just a little, but at least he was trying. Then after his fluids, I was cuddling him when he stuck his head out of my shirt and stole a cookie from my husband - it was so cute I almost cryed. He just took a couple of bites and then got tired again, but he is holding his head up tonight and sniffing at everything. Thanks for your prayers...and all your advice and phone calls. I had forgotten how great you guys are...its been a long time since I was involved - with my mother's health and our move - but now I'm back - and hopefully with my little guy. We only have the two now. Deedlit (8 yrs old) died the day before our move and Solo (her mate died the next day). Here's to tomorrow!

I am so happy that Pockets is doing better! It's so scary when a beloved pet gets sick because it can be hard to realize what is wrong with them. I really can't give you any advice, but I really wanted to tell you that I am happy he is doing better and I pray that will continue. Good luck and keep us posted!

Debi, here are some hugs for you and Pockets and some from all of us. Glad to hear that Pockets is improving. I hope he continues to get better and quits worrying his grandmother Bourbon. You have a good long talk with him about that, OK? Please keep us posted on his progress.
