Hi all! Stinkers joeys are oop!! One on the 4th, one on the 5th!! They are both girls too so- if all goes well, they get to stay with us! Yay! Now for my question.. We went up to check and they were both in the nest and mom and dad were out and eating and playing. They girls were crying for mom I guess and both parents were ignoring the joeys. I don't know how long though!! They joeys were still warm so- maybe they were missing mom and dad for a minute tops..

I conned mom back into the pouch and fed her mealies and the babies started nursing again.. Still there after a half hour when I just checked on them again.. would taking their wheel out be a good idea for the night? Jay thinks yes so the parents can be around more and hear the joeys instead of the wheel(we have a wodent wheel- kinda noisy when they're bookin on it).

I have Suz' page in my favorites for quick reference too.. Should I get puppy milk and keep an eye out to start supplementing? I can do my best this weekend but once the work week starts- neither Jay or I are home until 4 or 5 at the earliest. Sorry for the length but, I want to give these girls the best start possible.. any help is appreciated..Thx- Diana

Diana,
It's a good idea to have puppy formula (preferably Esbilac), Pedialyte (apple flavored) and baby cereal on hand JUST TO BE ON THE SAFE SIDE! Hopefully you won't need them, but it's better to be safe than sorry. You can also jot down my phone number & call me if there's an emergency: 440-953-0904.
Right now, though, it sounds like things are going normally. The parents will sometimes leave the joeys alone in the pouch for a few minutes at a time. As long as the joeys aren't left long enough to get cold, they should be okay.
If you would feel more comfortable with removing the wheel, then go ahead and do so. You can also rub some veggie oil on the axle of the wheel and this will quiet it down some - always works like a charm for my wheels thumb

Thanks Suz. I don't have anything on hand right now. Jay just checked and both parents are out and baby crying. I whipped up some warm- not hot- water, honey and wombaroo. One lapped it off the toothpick. We're holding them now in fleece to warm them up. This is their first go at babies and it's not looking too good. We're doing our best right now but, it's up to mom and dad over night. Thanks for your help..

Things are going ok..mom and dad are doing a better job. The younger joey is quite a bit smaller and skinnier.. we started supplementing her just now. The older girl is doing great as far as we can tell.. very strong and bigger. Doing what we can at this point but, unsure about the little ones future.

Hopefully one of the more experienced breeders can confirm/correct me on this, but I heard that when you have a smaller one, you should pull the larger baby to supplement, thus giving the smaller baby more access to mom's milk

dunno

Glad to hear they're doing better though smile

Just an update.. we lost little baby girl today. We were supplementing her, helping her potty, keeping her in warm (not hot) fleece; but she didn't pull through. The other girl is still doing very well and will post pics this weekend. Thanks all again..

I'm so very sorry, Jay & Diana,
Know that you did everything you could for her and that it just wasn't meant to be. If I can be of any help to you with the other joey, please don't hesitate to call me.

One final update- This morning Jay and I woke up just before 5:30a.. baby girl was on the bottom of the cage cold. She was still alive barely. I warmed her up and put she and mom in a pouch around my neck. Less than a half hour later when she was nice and warm,I supplement fed her. She ate ok.. did again an hour later right before I left at 7am.. mom was nursing her too when I left. It was a very long day for me today.. got out at 7pm.. about an hour before I left work, I texted Jay and asked him about baby girl.. he told me the bad news. His second day coming home from work to a deceased baby. This one was so out of the blue.. I tried everything to save these babies except for taking time off from work to hand raise them- which I couldn't do due to my recent promotion. I feel so awful right now.. for so many things.. for the babies, for Jay's horrible sights upon his arrival home, me not being able to work shorter hours to take care of the babies.. I'm sorry for the length of this.. thank you Suz for being so kind..and for those who inquired on the babies.. May they be happy over the Rainbow Bridge with those who passed before them.. ~Diana
