I had my glider (Spock) for 9 months. He was a little stinker for the first 4 months I had him, but he eventually warmed up to me and would bark at me to take him out of his cage... he liked to run around in a hamster ball all over the house, and liked to curl up in a ball in my hands and sleep.. Well, one night he barked for me to take him out of his cage, and I was too busy studying for a college exam.. I fed him like usual at around 11 p.m. I fed him his favorite, he really liked oranges... Anyhow, the next morning he was acting fine...I left while it was still dark outside... When I got home in the late afternoon, he was laying in the bottom of his cage... I thought he was asleep, so i reached in to take a look at him.. When I turned him over, he was dead.. He had stuffed his mouth full of paper that he grabbed from the bottom of his cage.. And he even had a handful in each paw.. I don't understand why he did this... He apparently suffocated on the paper... He never ate paper from his cage before, why did he do this? He had food to eat, water to drink, and appeared to be just fine! Was he depressed because I wouldn't play with him the previous night?? He was my first glider and most likely my last because I don't think I can deal with losing another pet. If anyone has any idea of what may have been wrong with my Spock, please post a reply.. I honestly have no idea, and if I thought he was sick I would have taken him to our vet.
:-(
Rest in peace Spock.... I miss you.. You sound like a really wonderful glidermom who did everything, and then some, to make Spock happy. He sounds alot like Jojo, who is a rescue. Talk about a stinker-I couldn't touch her without getting bitten HARD for months. I worked so hard to earn her trust, we bonded more intensely than I'll ever bond with another glider. I don't know what caused Spock to do what he did, but I do know that it was totally unpredictable. We ALL live in fear of these situations. Please stop beating up on yourself. You did nothing wrong. alice
------------------
Breathe deep. Talk slow. Walk soft. Let go. Give big. Take less. Don't count-just guess. Act fair. Think long. Laugh loud. Sing strong. Plan bold. Dream far. Feel loved. You are.

Thanks for your heart-felt messages.. It really helps to have a place to talk about these things.. I couldn't really tell anyone else about how I felt about Spock []http://www.sugarglider.net/ubb/images/icons/blush.gif[/] without people looking at me like I was silly. Thanks for listening and caring.
Phoenixbleu

You're not silly at all. At least we all know that. []http://www.sugarglider.net/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif[/]
Isn't it amazing, how such a tiny animal can grab hold of your heart?! So tiny, yet they bring us so much love and joy.
I'm sorry for your loss. []http://www.sugarglider.net/ubb/sad.gif[/] My prayers are with you.
Deb
and my Possums

It's hard isn't it. I lost a glider a while ago, my first actually. I still have the other one of the pair and got him a new friend. I kept blameing myself all the time. But it turned out that it was because of her very first owner that didn't feed her the right diet. Don't feel bad. I did earlier, but not so muah anymore. I'm sure you took great care of your glider. Even though He glided to heaven a little early than expected, know that he's thinking of how much you loved him. []http://www.sugarglider.net/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif[/]

What a very sad thing. I'm sorry you lost your love.
I'm very curious about the paper in Spock's mouth. Has anybody else seen this before? It sounds so unusual to me that he would stuff himself with paper like that! Could there have been something spilled on the paper that he was trying to eat?
Perhaps he became confused after a fall... (see Bourbon's post about falls in cages...)
so sorry again.
------------------
Learning more and more every day...
