I was reading through the archieves at one of my southern flying squirrel message boards and someone was talking about how pans coated with Teflon, if overheated, can burn and emit dangerous fumes that can potentially kill birds and other small animals. This article was referenced in the post: USA Today: Teflon Pans Create a Sticky Situation when overheatedSince gliders have a very acute sense of smell and are affected by many of the things that birds are effected by, I thought this was very interesting.

Thanks for sharing that Katie. As a long time parrot owner, I have never used Teflon coated products. My vet was actually the one who gave me the original warning. Guess it had been mentioned in one of the journals.

This is all new to me. Thank you so much for posting about this. I doubt that any of us would intentionally let things overheat, but it does happen. It's probably a good rule of thumb to not have gliders near these appliances and utensils anyway, but this is a great warning to keep in mind. I occasionally cook things that call for high heat, and use a teflon pan. I don't know that the amount of time it's cooked would reach these temperatures, but I never would have considered it a problem before reading this.
