Sad Glider.
This is my first post, but I’ve been reading, and you all seem like a supportive and smart group. I have had my first SG Marcy for 2 years now. She has always been an affectionate, playful, sweetie. The vet said she’s the most tame he’s ever seen. I got her a companion after a few months. Jordan was a year old female, from a private owner who never took time to socialize her. They didn’t get along at first, but they learned to love each other. Although Jordan never bonded with me and still bit me any time I tried to give her a treat, she would jump on my shoulder for a short ride, and my bf and I loved her.
A few nights ago we had a terrible accident. The dogs were sleeping in the kitchen, because it was very cold that night (very unusual where I live). I know I should have know better, been more careful etc., but the dog got a hold of Jordan and killed her instantly. I never thought my dog would do that. The SG’s have their own room where we let them run around, but must have gotten out while I was feeding them.
Now my Marcy is sad, and isn’t playing or eating much even though I’m trying to spend a lot of time with her, but she’s sleeping too much. She’s also started barking in the middle of the night, because I think she’s bored, so I go in to see her, but she just runs in her box. I turn the TV on to keep her entertained. Should I take her to the vet? Should I get her a new baby girl to keep her company? I just want her to be happy again.
Thanks for your help.

[This message has been edited by Marley (edited 01-05-2001).]

First, I just want to express my sympathies. The loss of a pet is so sad and difficult.
I was in a similar situation, where I had my first glider for a few months before introducing a friend. The new one, a little boy, passed away suddenly, mysteriously, and unexpectedly one night, and my first glider went into some serious mourning. The first day she wouldn't be calm unless she was on me -- not in a pouch, but near my skin. The next few days she didn't want to play at all. It was very sad to watch.
I did get a new companion for her fairly quickly, this time a little girl. I kept them separate for some time, but they both knew the other one was there even though I wasn't letting them come in contact with each other. The addition caused an immediate end to the grieving. I think it was the right thing to do in my situation. It may not be the only answer, but I wanted to share my one experience with you.

Thanks for your sympathies and advice.
Last night while I was preparing Marcy’s food I thought of something cute my Jordan did one day. I had given her corn as a treat, because she loved corn, and then I tried to give her a dry soybean. She just held it in her hand looked at it, and threw it back at me. She wanted more tasty corn.
I have contacted the breeder where I got Marcy, and they have one baby girl available.
I’m sure I will not be able to resist picking her up tonight.
Thanks again
How old is the baby you are getting? Please watch the male as glider rape is something to worry about. If the female isnt 6mo 00p or older you could have problems. Putting an older female with a younger male is ok. But your male may want to mate and it could be really bad for your little girl.
------------------
Love and kindness is a gift. Use it freely

Thank you bmxgirl.
I did go and get a new little girl last night.
I introduced her to Marcy from outside the cage, and they were both very interested in each other. The little one stared making this rapid funny sound, and got all excited. she seamed desperate to get in there with Marcy. I got a bunch of new toys for Marcy, and she was out more last night exploring. My mom also came by to see her, and I know that made her happy because she loves my mom. []http://www.sugarglider.net/ubb/heart.gif[/]
I think she is going to be ok.

I'm very sorry to hear about Jordan. []http://www.sugarglider.net/ubb/images/icons/frown.gif[/] But, I'm so happy that you were able to get your new baby yesterday! I know she will never quite replace Jordan, but hopefully she will help some. I'm glad she is helping to make Marcy happy again.
P.S. Welcome to the board!! Let us know if there is anything else we can help with!
[This message has been edited by Leanne (edited 01-05-2001).]

This is such a sad story! I'm so sorry this happened. I know we want to blame ourselves when this happens....but that really helps so one. However you posting this here will help so many glider owners. i hope this sad event will save the life of another glider somewhere.
I'm glad your female is doign better. Its very normal for them to grieve and become depressed.
Good luck with your new glider.

I named the new little one Zoey.
I took them to the vet yesterday, and they are both doing well. Beck, thank you for reasurring that Marcy's behavior is normal. I tried to talk to the vet about it, but he just seemed to dismiss it.
They are so happy together. Zoey tries to take piggy back rides on Marcy. They are always grooming each other and cuddling. Ohhh, what a sad story! I'm glad that Marcy has a new friend now and with Zoey being so young it's like she has a new mom with Marcy. And hope all stays well now. Thank you for sharing your story. I'll not let my gliders near my dogs. One dog want to play with them but I don't think he'd realize he can hurt them. Good luck with all and update us from time to time on how they two are doing.
