Does anyone know if gliders have more than one set of eyelids? Lots of animals do and I was wondering about gliders. If they do have more than one set, what is the purpose of the others?

From what I have seen watching mine they only have 1. But they may have a 2nd that I have just never seen the other one retracted.
Usually in other aminals the 2nd eyelid is used for protection, to keep the eye from drying out. Just normal protection of the eye it's self. I know some animals that dive in the water have a 2nd one to keep the pond/lake water out of the eye.

Much like a cat, a glider actually has two sets of lids, an inner set and the normal, outer set you see every day. The inner eyelid will stick sometimes, allowing a glimpse of it, especially in dehydrated gliders.

We took one of our gliers in to the vet today and he gave her an eye exam. The vet said they have an upper and lower eyelid. And a third eyelid that opens and closes from the side.

Wow, 3 lids? I knew of two by seeing them, did not know they had another set as well! We have some well protected little brats don't we...lol.

Yes, the inner lid is white-ish in color.

See my post in Health & Hygiene and you will see why I was interested in this. We have a glider that appeared to have a film over its eyes. It did not look like cataracts or fat depostis and I wondered if it might be the inner eyelid. Come to find out, she has ulcers in both eyes. This was a learning experience for us as well.
