<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crying.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crying.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crying.gif" alt="" />My glider has what the doc calls <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nixweiss.gif" alt="" />'bacterial infection' he said that it cannot be transmitted from glider to glider when it is under the skin, but I am worried. The other day her cheek got really bad again and my father and i pushed out infection. The doc told us to just remove any infection that we find but we have gotton about 4 full pea sized infection out of it. We are really worried about my baby but she seems to be doing ok. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/worried2.gif" alt="" /> She knows that we are trying to help, but I just dont know what to do anymore. The doc says that anibiotics will not help because the infection is through 3 layers of skin and the medicine can only go through 2 layers. They cannot do anything more for her because it is so close to her eye, but i feel like there is something that I could be able to do. The doc says that it will not kill her, but I am starting to worry. My glider is naturally very <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/littleglider.gif" alt="" />mello <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/littleglider.gif" alt="" /> , so i cant really tell when something is wrong. If anybody has advice, I desperatly need it! Thank you!

PS. I am getting another glider on May 23 but I am hesitant to because of the infection. What do you think? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nixweiss.gif" alt="" />

Ok, first of all we are all here for you.
Now, what is the type of infection your glider has? And what type of meds did the doctor give you? Do you have any pictures of your baby with the infection?

Of course we are not vets here so we cant give you any medical advice but someone here may know the right questions and tests that you should ask your vet about.

What diet is your glider on? Age? so forth... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nixweiss.gif" alt="" />

My suggestion...get another vet. One who is knowledgable with sugar gliders.

A culture and sensitivity (C&S)needs to be done in order to identify the type of bacteria and also as to what antibiotic it is sesitivie for proper treatment.

Please take your glider to another vet for proper vet care. Without an antibiotic...your little one may become quite ill.

we've all had some kind of infection of some sort, and you now how painfull it can be. If you mean puss as infection, its the bodys natural way of protecting the infected area, could there be a foreign body in there of some sort? i think seeing another vet would be in your best interest. keep us posted on your little one

go back to you vet, have a c&s done, have him lance it, drain it, place the glider on baytril, till the resuts come back.

Age: 6 months old
Gender: Female
diet: Monkey Chow, fruit (grape, apple or bannana), sunflower seeds and an occasional <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/clown.gif" alt="" />flower pedal <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/clown.gif" alt="" /> off of my plant

I took it to a vet that specialized in gliders. He told my that it was a bacterial infection. It is under 3 layers of thick tissue and is too close to her eye for anibiotics to help. While I was there he lanced it and got out all the infection and he doesn't know what caused it. He didn't give me any medication because he said that it wouldn't work and to just put neosporin/ polysporin on it. Two days afterwards, I was cutting her nails and she got mad and scratched the wound open, alot more puss came out and my dad and I treated it with peroxide and neosporin. We put a cone collar around her so that she could not mess with it, and it soon started to heal. She scab finally went away about two weeks ago and two days afterwards, a bump started to form under her eye again. It was harder and this time, you could tell it hurt( before, it didn't hurt her, she didn't even seem to realize it was there). The other night i was playing with her and I felt something pop, and when i looked at her eye, you could see the infection underneath alayer of skin and was covering up the inside of her eye. My dad got some infection out where the vet had opened it up before, and then the following night he got out some more. Tonight, the bottom part of her eye is fine but around the eye is is swollen, hard, and red. She cannot open her eye much and I am extremely worried. The vet that we went to last time, said he couldn't even get us in for over a week, and i am not too sure about his practice. I just don't know what to do.

Thank y'all so much

you really should find another vet and get a c & s done as described above. i am also going to give you a link to glider diets . you should get your glider on a proper and more stable diet to ensure she is getting the vitamins, calcium, and phosphorus that she needs

The abcess is not going to heal until your little glider is put on a proper med for treatment. Healing over....is just leaving the infection deep inside to where one does not see it and will only create more pain and suffering. Without proper treatment....the infection may go septic and thus may take the life of your glider.

Proper vet care is needed....ASAP. Get the vet to do a C&S and put the glider on some Baytril. The results will take about 4 to 7 days. Then if need be....a better med can thus then be perscribed. The med more than likly will be an oral one.

Call your vet ASAP in the morning and demand a C&S be done on the tissue involved. Do not let the clinic tell you that your glider will have to wait a week to be seen as your little one is very very ill and is suffering. If the clinic still puts you off...then by all means call another vet who will help your glider. Since you live in Houston...there are other vets there.....who are knowledgable as well as willing to give proper care to a sick sugar glider.

Ouch! That eye sure looks painful. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

Please get your little one to the vet ASAP... if you need to write down Judie's and Bourbon's suggestions, do so. (I know I would sure need to!) <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" /> Let us know what the vet tells you... I'll pray for your sweet little one.

It is very important that you get your baby to the vet immediately. Take her to a different vet than the other one because it doesn't seem like he knows how to treat gliders very well. Please get your baby to a good vet! Keep us updated.

I took <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/littleglider.gif" alt="" />Pheobe(glider) <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/littleglider.gif" alt="" /> to the vet today and he lanced it. He said that the infection was all around her eye but did not cause any problems for the actual eye. The vet gave me <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yelclap.gif" alt="" />Baytril (grape flavored) to give to twice a day for a week. Pheobe has been kind of slow today but she is still getting over the anesthetics and atleast she is not in pain anymore <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dance.gif" alt="" />. I got another glider today aswell <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/gliderangel.gif" alt="" />. I wasn't going to get him for two more weeks, but I got him early. The vet said that her eye was most likely not contagious but I am keeping them apart untill Pheobe is off of medication. I will keep y'all posted on what is going on. Thank <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/heartpump.gif" alt="" />you <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/heartpump.gif" alt="" /> so much for all of <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/heartpump.gif" alt="" />your <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/heartpump.gif" alt="" /> support. I just hope that the infection does not come back.

<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frostyangel.gif" alt="" />Ashley <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frostyangel.gif" alt="" />

PS. My new glider is a male. I don't have a name yet and any suggestions are welcome <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/clown.gif" alt="" />. And if anyone knows how too keep him from bitting so hard, tips are appreciated(he almost made me bleed today) <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/roflmao.gif" alt="" />.

I'm glad to hear she's finally on an oral antibiotic <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yelclap.gif" alt="" />. One thing to consider-with an infection that deeply seated-if it's still present when she finishes the current course, you and your vet may want to consider another 7 day round to be safe. It can take awhile to eradicate an infection that's had time to build, and if not treated long enough, could become resistant (to the meds) and harder to treat. Keeping your little one in my prayers and hoping for a speedy recovery for her! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/agree.gif" alt="" />
Also, is the vet doing a c&s to determine exactly which bacteria you're dealing with?

glad to see she went to the vet today!!! did you bring her to the same vet?? was a c & s done. good call on keeping them separate, but there should be a 30 day quarantine after bringing a new glider into the house anyways.
