I have a 13 week old female glider (my first experience with gliders) who has recently, in the past several days, developed a hard round lump under her chin. Have any of you seen anything like this? Any answers out there among you more experienced owners?

get to the vet asap!
i'm not 100% sure but it sounds like lumpy jaw and its fatal. most common cause is a dry food. pieces of the food get caught in the saliva glands and that will cause infection and than death.

also what is her diet?

please hurry to the vet. better safe than sorry.

Robert:
Thank you so much! I really appreciate your reply and concern.
As for her diet:
She eats Happy Glider dry food! and various fruits and vegetables daily. I usually give her a piece of fruit during the day for a snack and then at night she gets:
dry food, vegetables and a small bit of yogurt.

I had never even heard of sugar gliders before March this year, so this is all so new to me. I switched her dry food from Exotic Nutrition (which she refused to eat) to Happy Glider(which she immediately loved) within the first week of bringing her home. This was upon a breeder's suggestion that Happy Glider was more nutritional.

What would you recommend for a diet?

I will probably get ingredients today for the BML diet unless
you have a better alternative. Thanks so much!

I am off right now to find my vet's number. We have an exotic vet nearby.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Robert is right, it does sound like lumpy jaw, and your glider should be taken to a vet asap!!!!
hear is a link to glider diets were you can find the recipe's to the two most popular diets, BML and Suncoast. i use bml for years now and my gliders love it, but gliders can be picky so you need to find the diet that works for you. there are different ways to make the bml to help with this that can be found on that link also.

Plaese update us after you get your baby to the vet ASAP! It really does sound like a case of lumpy jaw and it is definetly not something you want to postpone getting to the vet with.
I would highly suggest you look at the diet links and most people on the board here do use the BML and never have a problem.
If for some reason you choose to stay on the Happy Glider Dry food PLEASE soak it in some apple juice or water to soften it before feeding it to your suggies.
Think of how it feels for us when we have an abcess tooth...now triple that a hundred times over and that is what your baby is going through....
And research, research and do MORE research...literally until your eyes are crossed and you just cant think and take in any more and than take a five minute break and come back for more.
GC is such an outstanding place to learn all about suggies and you can also learn alot at the Info Tree . Also always feel free to ask away with any and all questions and concerns. We are always willing to reply.
Good Luck and once again please update us on your baby.

I've been online looking at various diets and health issues a lot this morning. I had already researched diets, especially the BML, but I have also read
from other sg owners that they use the dry food with variety. I am off to buy the BML ingredients before my vet appt. today.

We have one exotic pet vet in the area. I called this morning and he can get me in at 1:30 Does anyone know of what kind of medicine they give for this? I just want to be prepared in case there is more than one alternative for this.

I do value this forum. I consider this part of my research, gleaning from the experience you all represent. So thank you to all of you experienced owners who are sharing with me.

There is one strange thing that I'm not sure fits with what I've heard about the pain. My baby is fine with me touching and petting this lump. She shows absolutely NO signs of pain. She was very playful and active last night and ate a very "normal" meal last night. Any ideas on this?

I will post after we return from her vet appointment.

Cysts can occur anywhere... it can be cancerous or simply an in-grown hair. My glider had one above his eye... well, he still has it. After the vet took a sample (she poked it with a needle), it went away, but came back a couple weeks later.

However, a lump on the jaw is a bit more suspicious... it's good to get it checked out, especially since your glider has been eating pelleted foods. Please let us know what your vet finds out.

I'm so sorry to hear that your baby isn't feeling very well. However in this situation I would run, drive whatever to get to the vet asap as this can be very serious. Hope to hear an update from you soon, and I'll be thinking of your little one!

I agree with the others....a vet check-up would be a really good idea.
It could be lumpy jaw, a common cyst, a swollen gland from an infection (teeth, etc.) , caused by an injury, etc... (with any of these things, it could be painful or not depending on the individual)
The safest bet would be to have a vet take a look and see what they feel is going on and what the best treatment might be.

Good luck with your little one! Keeping you both in my thoughts. Please let us know how your little ones doing.

my opinion BML is by far the best diet. it covers all the corners calcium, vit, protein, fruit, vegges, bugs, and love.

gliders are very good at hiding pain, you will never know that there in pain until the last min. than its almost to late

I would also say its probably lumpy jaw. My kuzco had this, I took him to the vet and the vet squeezed pus out (i know its really gross..) This was the ONLY time Kuzco ever crabbed at ANYONE. I gave him his meds prescribed and fed the same thing, at this time they were on briskys pellets and insectivore fare or zookeepers(both were soaked in juice, they were never fed dry), I get the two mixed up. They all (4 gliders) were all on this diet, of course along with fruits and veggies and protein. Well...it went away, but came back a week later..still had meds leftover the Dr. told me to continue the meds for 14 days this time instead of 7. Went away within days...I noticed there was a little lump still under his jaw but it was really tiny and much harder this time, I brought him back to the vet, vet took x-rays, and he was fine, that was just his way of healing and to this day he still has a tiny little bump, vet said prob scar tissue, or something of that sort. Then...I gave them a little bit more of briskys about 2-3 months ago just for a snack, and sure enough he got it again...so thats the last of any type of pellets for my gliders. Not all my gliders got it, I guess some gliders are more prone to it than others, but they will never eat pellets again. I believe the medications they give are Baytril and my Dr. gave Septra. Good luck, and I hope all is well! Its a great thing that you made an appt asap!

At 13 weeks OOP that means this baby has only been eating solid food for 5 weeks. I don't think that's really long enough to be developing lumpy jaw. I'm thinking that it's something else, though I have no idea what.

How old was the glider when it was weaned? Was it supplemented with milk or something as a joey? When was it taken from it's parents? Did it have a sibling, and is the sibling still alive? What is the breeding history on the mother and father? Have any of their other offspring had defects like this?

I would not only take the baby to the vet ASAP but also call up your breeder and ask these questions.

Baby is doing great! Thank you all so much for your warm advice. I read it all and have taken it to heart.

Today the vet said he felt strongly that it was NOT lumpy jaw, bec of the location and the quickness that it onset and that is was very hard. Really? the suggies don't show signs of pain? Wow!
The lump was not "on" her jaw, but all external. They were able to get her mouth open and look inside her mouth. He said perhaps she had hit it on something while playing and I would never have known. He believes it is probably abscessed from some bacteria that got into her skin. He gave her a strong dose (she is 58 grams!) of antibiotic that is to last a week and then I am to return if any changes other than softening and disappearing.

and I'm sorry, she is not 13 weeks OOP, she is 17 weeks. I got her at 8 weeks OOP. I didn't know anything about sg's until I got home from that vacation. I had no premeditation to buy a suggie but when I saw her I just fell in love. I came home and did a lot of research then. Then my good friend met her and fell in love and had a little sg in her hands 4 days later. The suggies are good friends and spend a lot of play dates together each week.

Anyway, the vet said Baby looked happy and very healthy. It felt so good to hear that. She sure did not like the exam. They were very gentle with her and spent a lot of time allowing her to get comfortable, but there is just no way around opening that little mouth 'gently'. She is okay tonight, but I feared that this maybe would set her back in trusting me, but she is fine with me tonight...just not with the vet!

So I spent the afternoon running my 3 boys around to gather ingredients for BML. She is on that tonight and loving it already! fortunately, she is not a picky eater (she doesn't miss a beat when it comes to food. Fortunately, she loves to exercise too, so she can maintain those grams!

And regarding her breeder, it was Tom Brown from Nashville, TN. He is very open to follow up of any sort...gave his cell phone and home phone, but I have found the internet the best source...not bec he is not available, the Internet is just so accessible and there is so much info out there.

I think I have answered all the qq's and then some. Thank you again for all the input. I am so glad I was able to get into the vet today.
Baby is snuggling happily now and doing well.
Thank you,
~gail

Thank you for the update! So glad to hear that your wee one is doing good! (I had wondered if this might be from an injury perhaps.)

sounds like she has a wonderful and very caring human Mommy!
Let us know how shes doing and how the treatment goes.
Prayer for a super quick recovery! (an no more yucky medicine... )
