Hi! I live in Washington state now but may be moving to California or New York in a year. I tried looking up state wildlife laws but it was some what confusing. Does anyone know if either of these states make sugar gliders legal? Thanks!

In California they are fully illegal. In New York I believe that they are legal, some cities may have bans on them though. Good luck.

They are illegal in NYC (the 5 boroughs, not Long Island), I'm not sure about other cities in NY, I would check with the local municipalities before moving. When the authorities find out you have gliders, they'll be confiscated and destroyed. Not to mention the fact that there wouldn't be any accessible vets that would/could treat them while you have them.

I am from California, and there is one loop-hole. If you are in the military then it is legal for you to own one as long as you had the pet BEFORE you moved into the state. You can look it up under the Pro-Military Law. New York has a Pro-Military Law also, but I do not know if they offer this. I have friends that own ferretts (normally illegal in CA) but since they were pets before the move they were able to keep them. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumb.gif" alt="" />

You can also get a Restricted Species Permit IF you work for a state licensed wildlife rescue organization. Gliders are considered wild animals (not pets) in the state of California.

I lived in CA for 11 years and i think the only way to own gliders is to get a permit from the state to keep them in your home Melissa

Lauren is right, gliders are illegal in NYC (the 5 boroughs). They are, however, legal everywhere else. Sugar gliders have been classified as a pocket pet. They are illegal in California and from what I hear it is near impossible to get a permit to own them there. But as for the vet issue, I believe vets in California are required to treat all animals, even if they are illegal.

No, vets are not required to treat all animals in California. A few years ago there was a law that illegal animals HAD to be reported by vets, but that law is no longer in effect. It is difficult to find a vet that will treat gliders in a legal state, I would say it's probably more difficult to find one that treats gliders in an illegal state. And as far as their classification in California it is (W) for Welfare Animal. This means that they are not allowed as pets so as to not deplete the wild population. It's really a silly reason because sugar gliders are Common (meaning not endangered or anything) and sugar gliders are now born and raised entirely in the US.

There was a regulation in CA passed a few years ago absolving veterinarians from any legal or criminal action if they chose to treat an illegal pet. That's different than saying they HAVE to treat them -- but the veterinarian won't be prosecuted if he/she chooses to treat an illegal animal. (but this strays far from the question being asked!)
