When gliders have triplets, is it normal for them to eat 2 of them and only raise one? i hear having 3 joeys at once is rare. I'm just wondering because Annie had triplets a while ago and she ate 2 of them and only left one.

Triplets are rare and I have only personally known one person that had a glider that had triplets and I know she had to help out a great deal in order to make sure they all got enough milk as the weakest of the three was having a hard time getting in and getting a nipple. I wouldn't say it is normal for a glider to eat her joeys. In my opinion there are a few reasons that mothers will eat their young when it comes to gliders. Sometimes it is diet and they aren't getting what they need so they eat their young. Another reason is that something is wrong with the joey and the mother knows it so she kills it. I also had a female that killed her joey because the father had passed away and she must have been scared to do it on her own as she had never eaten her joeys before. There may be other reasons, but I believe that the first two are the main reasons that gliders eat their young. So sorry to hear this happened, but hopefully the one she is raising will live and be a sweet little baby.

Last year Mocha had triplets and ate one, leaving a boy and girl. Perhaps if one or two are under-nurished they will do away with it?

Triplets are rare. And when all three come oop. usually one of the three will be much smaller. Usually the smallest one does not survive and two out of the three do.

I have a client who purchased a baby from me several years ago. When the little one matured...she had a set of triplets. This mother raised the triplets on her own with no supplementing to the babies from the owner. However....all three of the joeys were the same size when oop. and during their development. I saw the triplets at 3 months oop. and all three were the same size still.

Triplets....all three usually do not survive without the owner supplementing...thus the rarity of them.

What happened with Annie's babies is that one baby would become OOP one at a time, but they dissappeared before another came out of pouch. When the 3rd one appeared, she was the only one to survive. She was named Chatter, because she was loud, crabbed at everything, and always jumpy.

Perhaps...next time this little mother will just have twins or even a single. If this was a first time of having babies...this would have difficult task for a new mother to take care of three little ones at one time. But then again...even for an experienced mother...having triplets is too demanding on any mother physically.

Since Anne is a small glider herself...she does well to have twins.
