Is it better to keep the scrotum or remove it with the testes? Is pain med necessary or just precaution?

Thanks.

This is my vets opinion on this topic. He says that if the neutering is done before they hit sexual maturity that it is best to leave the scrotum as that way people can still tell if they have a male or a female and he says there is no medical reason for removing it unless they have hit sexual maturity. If done when they are younger the scrotum will stay up and not hang far down where it is at risk of getting hung up on something. He says that if they have hit sexual maturity that that is a risk so then he prefers to take the scrotum.
We do give pain meds just to make sure they do not self-mutilate. We have never had a problem with any of our neuterings so we continue to do it this way. We only do pain meds for the first 24 hours and then we stop. They are always out playing and eating as if nothing has happened the night of the neutering.
I look forward to hearing other people's views on this as well. Great topic!!

I have only had the experince of having the scrotum left, so nothing to compare to. But my little guy had no problems at all and did not appear to be in any pain.

Neutering is best done when the glider is a little baby as there is less discomfort. However, my vet neuters adults as well by just removing the testes and leaving the PomPom intact. No glue or stitches are used to close the incesion.

The adult male usually takes a few additional days to heal.

As for pain management...babies get a pain med for the first 24 hours...adult males for a min of 36 hours.

I recently had an adult male named Taz who was 4 1/2 yrs oop. neutered who did not eat or drink the night after surgery. He even refused mealies. Second day he was dehydrated and he had to be sub-q'ed as well as put on an antibiotic. By the fifth day following surgery he was starting to eat and drink on his own. By day eight following surgery he had fully recovered. Taz has since gone to his new home and is doing very well.

Most gliders do fine with the proceedure for neutering. However...one needs to monitor the newly neutered male as occassionaly one will need a little extra help with aftercare to speed the healing process.

I am interested to see that you leave the scrotum attached even with older males. I will have to tell my vet that you have had success with this. He had read that someone had major problems with this with older males being done so he has always removed them with the older males. We have only had one older male done and he also had a lot more problems with healing from the neuter than my joeys have ever had. I had always read that it was better to wait until they hit sexual maturity, but I also have not found that to be true. Judie and her vet have helped my vet a great deal. As a matter of fact that is where he learned to neuter from. We had to find vets that could train our vet as he had never seen a glider before ours and now he is awesome with them thanks in part to Judie's vet. My vet also does not stitch anything closed and gives pain meds for the same amount of time. The incision is so small you can barely notice it and it heals in no time at all. I love topics such as these. I always learn so much.

I've had 4 males neutered. Only one of them had the scrotum taken. He didn't do as well as the other 3 that left the scrotum. He was also younger and done by a different vet, though. He was the first to get neutered and I learned from that experience. He had to wear an e-collar so he wouldn't over groom the area and chew the glue off. The other 3 didn't need stitches or glue and none have required an e-collar. I did get pain meds for all of them even though the vets said they didn't normally send home pain meds. This has just been my experience. I hope it helps.

I re-verified with my vet's office, and according to the tech, they said that the Dr. said that they take part of the scrotum so as to allow for easier healing (taking it all apparently puts a strain on healing the wound). He said they also use subdermal stitches and body glue. Anyone get clarification with their vet on this?

Personally, I have been having babies as well as adult males neutered for over four years. My guess is...over a hundred males neutered during this time easily.

From experience....I have found the neutered male does best if no stitches or glue is used to close up the surgical site. Stitches and glue are foreign and the glider...being a very compulsive type animal usually will rip or chew to rid himself of the material.

The vet does a tie to the two tubes and a blood vessel befor the actual snip...and after that...there are not stitches or glue used. The incesion will close within 24 hours usually in a baby and with an adult...by 48 hours one can hardly find the site.

If this were my glider...and he was going to be neutered by your vet...and he is going to do the procedure as you discribed...make sure you have an ecollar that fits befor the surgery is done. More than likly he will not need it...but on the other hand....best to be safe than sorry.

Can anyone reference a vet who is willing to share trade secrets? I want to see if my vet will confer with others in order to not have to do the glue and stitches thing. If in Texas, the better.

Thanks,

I'm sure my vet would, but he's not in TX he is in IL. IF you want his number let me know and I can post it for you. Judie's vet is the one that trained my vet though if her vet takes phone calls like that you might want to have your vet talk with him. Doesn't really matter what state their in as it's just a phone call.
