One of the boys detached tonight and he is missing an eyeball! I got to hold him and he doesn't have any other deformaties, except for where there are always two bulges under the closed eye, one is missing. The other baby hasn't detached, but appears to be normal and has both eyes. I still can't find my camera cord and have a new one being shipped, so I can't upload any pics yet.
Does the eyelid appear damaged at all? Or is the eyeball just missing from the socket without any lid damage? If the lid is damaged, his mother may have injured him. If not, then it may be a congenital deformity. Either way, a vet check is in order to make sure the joey is healthy otherwise.
No, nothing is damaged, it looks like a normal closed joey eye, just missing the bulge. He is all the way back inside of Sophie's pouch nursing right now. He is otherwise healthy looking, a good size, a good strong cry.
Here are the pics that I took of the little guy. I know that it is a birth defect(and I wonder if that was him that I kept picking up from the drop pan), but my question is has anyone ever had this happen/have any advice for us? He is definitely going to stay here forever with me, but I would love to talk to someone that has seen/had this problem before. **thank you so much to Bourbon for helping me out in the birth defects thread **
I would wait until his eyes were open before getting too freaked out. Maybe for some reason or another, that eye just isn't bulged out the way the other one is... I've seen joeys with eyes that look like both of his (bulging and flat), usually it's dependant on their face shape, but there could be other factors...

Thanks guys! He is adorable! And full of spunk already Leyna, thank you, I hadn't though of that! Hopefully that is the case, I just want to be prepared, and I wonder what it does look like under there. He actually looks better in those pics than when he first came oop (it was kind of sucked in a little) so your comment does give me hope
Another update on my little man...I named him Rocco And his eyes are starting to open. He definitely doesn't have an eye in his right socket I am going to wait for him to get a little bit bigger and then take him to the vet to see if there is anything we can do for him. Here are some new pics, taken today of him and his brother, who didn't detach until 3 days ago.
I had a cat with one eye. Like 1duck1goose said, the vet will probably stitch it closed.
With my cat, the vet cut the eyelid top and bottom a little bit - I know it sounds gross, but she did it so that the two eyelids will actually grow together. Then when the stitches heal or come out, the eye will stay closed. It will actually be sealed.
Your babies are adorable!

Kyrie, nothing will ever fill the hole you left in my heart.
Rocco had his vet appointment today and it went very well His eye is nice and clean, not irritated, no other abnormalities, just missing an eyeball. At this point there isn't anything to do, he doesn't need it stitched closed, I just have to keep an eye on it and clean it with some saline solution if it gets gunky at all and watch for any infection.
Thank goodness he has you in his life Chrissy. You're wonderful and full of love.

he's a beautiful boy Chrissy Like Jaimee mentioned, I'm betting he won't need a modified setup because he's never had that eye, he'll automatically learn with making the adjustments right away because he's never had the eye so there won't be anything to miss..
