My boy Nicky got a cyst/abscess on his nose again last week. The darn thing seems to appear every 6-9 months. Anyway, last week I noticed that his nose was starting to swell up again. I notified my vet and he had me put triple antibiotic ointment with a steroid in it on Nicky's nose. I was to call if it got bigger or didn't go away like it always had before. By Thursday morning his nose was starting to swell up pretty good, and I figured if I didn't get Nickers in soon it would pop & drain & my vet wouldn't be able to determine what was going on to cause this. However my vet isn't in the office on Thursdays. Besides, I thought I had an appointment on Friday morning for my Sydney's pouch recheck & figured I'd just take Nicky along. So Friday came & I bundled them up & took them in only to find that my appointment had been rescheduled for Monday & my vet was out of the office & the other vet isn't comfortable treating gliders unless it is life threatening. So I took him back home to wait for Monday when I had the appointment. Since he'd had this before, I was concerned but not overly so. I truely expected it to drain like it has every other time that I've called & made an appointment to have it lanced. I'd make an appointment & by the next morning it was totally gone.....no sign that it had ever been there. However this time that was not what happened. On Saturday I noticed that there was a dark spot on Nicky's nose....right in the center of the swelling. http://s28.photobucket.com/albums/c221/Glidrz5/?action=view¤t=P1260093.jpghttp://s28.photobucket.com/albums/c221/Glidrz5/?action=view¤t=P1260091.jpg(Nicky's tongue is sticking out due to his lack of lower incisors, not because he is being strangled) I called my vet's office. He was still out, but I did talk with the other Dr. She thought that Nicky had probably tried to scratch at it to open it & hadn't opened it enough. All he had done was to scratch the skin a bit without letting the cyst/abscess drain. Either that or it was starting to open just a little bit on it's own since they often will do it that way. She recommended that I try washing his nose with warm water. If it was a scab there should be some dried blood transferred onto the washrag. If it was something else, I should bring him in. So I took Nicky into the bathroom, wrapped him in his nail trim bag (thank you again Jen, they are so handy) and washed his face. Nicky was so good when I did this. He didn't fuss or crab at me, tho he did squirm a bit and made a few unhappy whines. I know that it was tender & had to hurt. Anyway, not only did the scab come off when I washed him, but the whole thing opened & drained. http://s28.photobucket.com/albums/c221/Glidrz5/?action=view¤t=P1260094.jpgThe swelling was down of course & I know that Nicky was much happier. However he now had a pit in his nose rather than a swelled spot. I quickly put some antibiotic ointment in it and after some consultation put Nicky on oral meds until his appointment on Monday morning. By Monday his nose looked MUCH MUCH better. Dr Kaiser checked him out, picked the scab off & checked his teeth (which looked fine from a physical point of view) He told me to continue with the oral antibiotics & the antibiotic ointment for a week & then bring Nickers back in. We did decide that since this is a reoccuring thing that the next time (if ever) it happens again that we will take an X-Ray of his nose to see if we can pinpoint where the problem is so that Nicky will not have to go through it again. The last picture was taken 24 hours after Nicky's vet visit. http://s28.photobucket.com/albums/c221/Glidrz5/?action=view¤t=P1010100.jpg

Nicky is back to normal now Gina! I'll still give him kisses from you tho All that's left to show that anything had ever happened to him is a small scratch on the top of his nose & a little bit of hair loss.

Poor little Nicky, he sure has gone through the wringer in his little life, huh? You're such a great glider mom to take such good care of him I'm glad to hear he's doing better now.

Chris, those pictures look horrible but I know it isn't quite as bad as it seems. I know you and Nicky have been through this before and I just hope for you both this is the last time!
As scary as it is when stuff like this happens, atleast it wasn't a "new" thing and you knew just what to do for him.
You sure have a group of "unique" gliders with "unique" issues.

Should the abcess reoccur... have the vet do a C&S. Antibiotic therapy for chronic abcesses may need to be administered longer than seven days. What a differance 24 hours made after the abcess ruptured. Make sure it heals from the inside outwards. Great job. Sending Get Well Wishes.

The abscess/cyst is totally gone now. You can't even tell that Nicky ever even had one on his nose. Even his hair is growing back. If it does re-occur Nicky will be getting an X-Ray to see if we can't determine the cause of the problem as well as getting it cultured.
