I feel so terrible right now. My little Abu, well he really likes this hair scrunchy of mine, so I put in it the cage to let him play with it. Well somehow he got a thread from the scrunchy around his foot, and it was cutting off circulation. So I used little tiny scissors to remove it, but the foot is red and swollen now, and it is kind of limp. My dad says it probably just needs to get the circulation back, and that it is sore. But I'm just wondering if this is really bad or not. Other than his back foot, he is leaping around just fine and playing with his brother.

He should be seen by a vet IMMEDIATELY! a Swollen foot due to circulation being cut off by a thread is very dangerous for a glider. The vet will need to check for necrotic tissue and will be able to prescribe an anti-inflammatory medication (such as Metacam) to help reduce the swelling. If not treated properly right away, he could very well start to self-mutilate. Have an E-Collar on hand so that if he does start to go after it you can collar him right away to prevent any major damage.
Please do NOT just wait to see if the swelling goes down on its own. This is VERY SERIOUS! IMMEDIATE VETERINARY CARE IS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY!!!

Also, don't beat yourself up over your mistake. It was just that - a mistake... The most important thing right now is to get him the professional care that he needs.

Well now I feel even worse because I can't take him to a vet. I can't drive. My dad wouldn't drive me or pay for it. So the only thing and best thing I can do is keep an eye on it, and if an E-collar is necessary then I'll do that. I feel really bad. I anticipated that I would've gotten a job by now, and had some money just in case I needed to take my guys to the vet. But I never thought an emergency would happen so soon after getting them. I guess this is one of those life lessons.

worried Ugh. I feel like such a bad pet owner. I love my little guys so much, and I feel so limited not being legally an adult or able to drive or anything. This is so frustrating, and I hope Abu gets better.

I checked him today after school and the swelling went down a bit, still a little red but looked better. I'll just have to keep checking on him.

No one could possibly understand how bad I feel right now. I don't want him to die. I love my little Abu. I'm bawling my eyes out right now, I feel stuck and there is nothing I can do for him. My parents say absolutely no vet.

I didn't think it was that serious. The foot is still pink, it is not turning blue or black which means that the tissue is still alive. Right?

And people please don't yell at me and criticize me for not having money to take him to the vet. I know someone is going to say "well you should have thought about that before purchasing a glider.."...Well guess what? I KNOW! I know I screwed up. You don't have to rub it in.

I've never had this happen so I really don't know what to tell you, but it could be serious. I don't know how long it takes for the tissue to turn black, and I don't know of anything you might have at home that you could put on it. Can you at least call your vet and ask them if there's anything you can do? Do you have a camera where you could take some clear pictures of it and possibly email it to the vet? Maybe if you explain your situation to them they might be able to take a look at the pictures and give you some help. (I know it's not as good as seeing it in person, but it's just a thought.) Not sure why your parents would agree to let you have a pet if they're not willing to get them vet care when they need it. I know no one ever expects these things to happen, that's why they're called emergencies! I'm not trying to be mean and I know you already feel bad, but I feel bad for your little Abu as well. What happens if the tissue does start dying? Will they agree to a vet visit then or will they just let Abu die? I would think a vet visit now would be less expensive than one later when it may include amputation. I feel bad for you, but just don't understand how people can deny vet care - that's part of responsible pet ownership (again, I know you have no control over it, just expressing my frustration). At least try calling the vet and see if you can get anywhere with them. Do you know anyone else who could take you to the vet? Friends, family, another suggie owner close to you?

Edited to say: I just read your last post - I'm not yelling at you, just stating facts and frustration. Sorry.

I'm glad it is less red and the swelling has gone down.

You aren't out of the woods, yet, tho. Keep watching it VERY carefully. It could still turn necrotic. Depends on how long it was like that.

The "spokes glider" at SunCoast has only 3 legs because of a similar injury. He got caught up in a thread, lost circulation to his foot, and ended up loosing his leg. His story is on the website somewhere, but I don't have time to look right now.

Did you call your vet and see if you can email them the pics? I'm not sure if they'd be able to tell without examining her, but it would be worth a try. Wish I could be of some help, sorry.

is Abu using the foot yet? Watch what color the food turns if it turns darker or black you'll need to do something...
I hate to say it, but if it turns out that it will threaten your glider's life...
I would rather turn my glider in to a rescue that could help him, then let him die if there was no way I could get care for him.
I don't think anyone is trying to be mean or make you feel bad. Wish your parents would help your glider.
((hugs)) i'm sorry you and your glider are going thru this.. I don't know how old you are... but in the future it might be a good idea to save your allowence or get a part time job when your older to save money for a emergency vet fund. Now you know that next time something happens to a glider your parents probably won't be willing to pay for vet bills.
I'm older, and I keep having to remind myself to be a responsible adult and to save for emergencies too...
good luck to little Abu.

I'm 16. I've been trying since even before I got my gliders to get a job. Nowhere wants to hire me because I am young and have no experience. I thought that by now some place would give me a break and hire me. When I get my job I am planning to set aside money for pet emergencies...and I thought I'd have some money by now. I guess life is really not something you can plan.

If the foot doesn't get better I think a rescue is my only option. Are there any rescues in CT?

I don't even know if my parents would be willing to drive to an animal rescue. As far as they are concerned it is my pet, my problem.

His foot doesn't seem to be worsening. The swelling seems to have gone down a bit since this morning, and he was using it a little more.

I had a vet called. The vet said not to put anything on it, and to monitor Abu for 24 hours and if he doesn't seem in pain, and is leaving it alone, to let the swelling subside on its own. She said she didn't think a string could cause a significant injury.

Apparently this vet is not familiar with sugar gliders or she would know better!
Since your parents won't take Abu to the vet then you really only have the option of watching, waiting and praying that nothing bad develops from this. Most breeders require parents to accept responsibility when a minor purchases a glider, but obviously that didn't happen in this case. Can you try to contact the breeder to see if there's anything they can do to help you out at this point? I know it's a long shot, but I'm really worried about the wait & see thing...

My mom is calling more vets. The breeder is in TX and I'm in CT, so I doubt there is anything she can do.

Somewhat good news. My dad came home and saw me upset about this. I told him that it might be more serious than we thought it was. He said that if Abu still is having trouble with his foot by Friday we can take him to see a vet. I know it is not immediate, but I'm somewhat relieved now.

He hasn't been paying any attention to his foot. Once we removed the thread he left it alone, probably happy that the string was off. He just kept on playing with Irwin, jumping around and stuff. Then they went to bed in their pouch. I have taken him out of the pouch twice to check his foot, and as I said before it looked less swollen. Then he just crawled back into bed. He doesn't seem to be in pain. He's acting normal so far.

Good news. Abu is awake and moving around fine. The foot is not puffy anymore, and he is using it to grip. It isn't limp anymore, it still looks a little sore but it looks much better. He happily took an apple and munched on it. He seems happy and in good condition. I'll continue to keep an eye on the foot, but I think he's in good shape. *phew*

glad to hear the update as well and strongly suggest you don't see the vet that told you a string could not cause injury....I have seen plenty of human children lose toes and fingers from a long strand of hair, and that is more fragile than string....when your parents can take you, see if you can go somewhere else....where in conneticut are you?

that used to happen to me when i was a baby. i'd grab my moms hair and end up twisting it around my fingers. then my fingers would turn blue my mom says.
