It's possible that sugar gliders could get these parasites, although I don't know of any documented cases. One of the main stransporters of these parasites is feces. I don't want to say too much else because my experience on the matter is limited. However, there is always a possibility that your gliders could get these parasites. I had a friend once whose entire family got pin worms...probably because the 2 year old ate some dirt outside (you know how 2 year olds are). These parasites are easy to pass on... Don't mean to scare you, but I'd probably have the vet check them to be safe.

One of my gliders got tapeworms about 4 years ago when I was watching my sister's dog for her (which had fleas) The vet theorized that Bittah ate one of the fleas and that's how she ended up with the infestation. Treatment was simple, but I don't remember what med she prescribed anymore. Not sure about the others though...

The information I was given about what all the round worms and hook works does to the body, not to mention heart worms is just something that I would hate anything as tiny as a glider to go through.
Oh, and I'm not really concerned about my glider's well being. They have their own rooms secluded away from the dogs. And I certainly don't want to start a panic wave through the community. I just had not heard of any known cases of these types of parasites.
So, besides Suz...anyone have any first hand experience with their gliders becoming infected with any of these?

Well, heartworms aren't contracted by fleas and ticks, just mosquitos. As for fleas, are gliders able to get them? I thought their coat was so fine, with many hairs per follicle, that fleas weren't able to survive in a gliders coat. As for tapes, hooks, and rounds, your glider would have to eat or come in contact with infected feces to contract those.

T, I know of at least two cases of positive identification of roundworms in gliders. Haven't seen the others so far. HTH

Round worms are very common in puppies and kittens as mom can transmit them directly to the babies, there are also different species, Hookworms are not just transmitted directly through fecal contact as the eggs that are shed in the fecal matter can live in the soil for years. Round worms are very easy to eradicate with medication. Tapeworms are transmitted by fleas. The fleas would not have to live on the sugar glider just jump on the glider, bite and get eaten when the glider gets itchy. Ticks can transmit Lyme's disease, Erhlichia canis, and Rocky Mountain Spotted fever but not heartworms. Heart worms are only transmitted by mosquitoes. They transmit the larval stage (microfilaria) that takes 6-9 months to mature into an adult that is around 12 inches long. Giardia is a one-celled protozoal parasite that can also live in the environment. And there are also whipworms. Lastly is coccidia (another one-celled protozoal parasite) that is common in puppies and kittens. And now you know why your vet recommends yearly fecal checks. Not only are your gliders at risk for these parasites but you can be too (though not with proper hygiene generally and don't walk outside barefoot).

Wow! Jen_S that was an excellent summary of the various parasites. Thank you VERY much for detailing all of that for us
BTW, I have sent you a PM. You can retrieve/read it by clicking on the flashing envelope next to where it says "My Stuff" at the top of any of these pages.
