They are omnivorous

In the wild they eat an assortment of plants, gums, eggs, small vertebrates and invertebrates.

I have read they were herbivores. This info would be mistaken for a personal belief? I mean scientifically if they eat the small critters they are unmistakably omnivores right? Thank for helping my confusion.

As angelskates said, they are omnivorous. They eat mostly plant material but eat bugs and small vertebrates when these are available - their breeding season in the wild corresponds to the increased availability of insects and small vertebrates.

Yes, definitely omnivores—a bit carnivorous and a bit herbivorous.

So...
It seems they are omnivore opportunistic feeders.
